The reality novel A Poet and Bin-Laden set in Central Asia at the turn of the 21st century against a swirling backdrop of Islamic fundamentalism in the Ferghana Valley and beyond, gives a first-hand account on the militants and Taliban's internal life.
The novel begins on the eve of 9/11, with the narrator's haunting description of the airplane attack on the Twin Towers as seen on TV while he is on holiday in Central Asia; and tells the story of an Uzbek poet Belgi, who was disappointed in the authoritarian regime in Uzbekistan and became a terrorist in the eyes of the world. His journey begins with a search for a Sufi spiritual master and ends in guerrilla warfare, and it is this tension between a transcendental and a violent response to oppression, between the book and the bomb, between Archipelago GULAG and modern Central Asia and Afghanistan, that gives the novel its specific poignancy.
In this book Hamid Ismailov masterfully intertwines fiction with documentary and provides wonderfully vivid accounts of historical events such as the siege of Kunduz, the breakout from Shebergan prison and the insurgency in the Ferghana Valley as witnessed by the Byronian figure of Belgi, who enters the inner sanctum of al-Qaeda, and ultimately meets Sheikh bin Laden himself.

In Dawn of Fantasy's second developer diary, Assistant Producer and Lead Writer Gordon Farrell is back to guide viewers through another game mode - this time with the help of Arielle Parkas, Assistant Voice-Over Director and Voice Actor for several elven characters. The captivating duo take players through Dawn of Fantasy's innovative 'Kingdom Wars' game mode. Kingdom Wars is an exclusively single-player Conquer-the-World style campaign mode with a mix of Skirmish and MMORTS gameplay elements to create a new, action-packed experience. This game mode takes the epic siege warfare, continuous army progression, army construction, and World Map from the massively multiplayer Online Kingdom mode and pairs it with an intelligent and aggressive AI, improved diplomacy features, and the ability to control conquered strongholds. At the same time, Kingdom Wars leaves out select 'Online Kingdom' mode elements including city construction, advanced economic micromanagement, and story-driven quests to promote fast-paced action at every turn. While introducing the Kingdom Wars mode, Gordon and Arielle detail key elements including World Map interaction, stronghold and economic management specific to KW, diplomacy, army camps, and epic stronghold sieges. The pair discusses some of their favorite features, with their competing biases thrown in for good measure. Viewers are in for a definite treat, as Gordon and Arielle take players to exotic locations never-before-seen in video, such as the dwarven mines where the player can stock up on gold reserves.
In a time of pandemonium following the recent War Without Kings, even the most peaceful settlements must be forever vigilant. Behind every shadow there is danger, behind every speech there is equivocation. While the common men, elves, and orcs see light once again in the aftermath of a horrible war, they know that it is but a facade. These are dark times, and the Great Lake has yet to see the last of its ripples. War is all that is on the horizon... In the first Developers' Diary from Reverie World Studios, Dawn of Fantasy's Lead Writer and Assistant Producer Gordon Farrell guides players through one of the game's many modes: Stronghold Defence. Stronghold Defence, the defensive counterpart of the Lay Siege skirmish mode, gives players the opportunity to practice defending a prebuilt stronghold in a quick-paced skirmish. Defensive players have an impressive array of tricks available to set up before the invading army reaches their walls: Set up spike traps or plant man-eating plants outside your gate to destroy your attackers, position cavalry outside of your walls to trample enemy units, and construct ranged siege weapons and dozens of other wall-mounted siege defenses. Be prepared to fight off ruthless attacks from the moment you spot the enemy on the horizon. Repair your damaged walls and buildings after every wave, and keep peasants nearby, ready to put out potentially-devastating fires caused by enflamed enemy arrows. The first wave is easy, the second... not so much. By the third, your king begs for mercy as the enemy breaks into the inner keep. Dawn of Fantasy is proud to offer some of the most elaborate and bloodiest siege combat seen in the RTS genre to date - do you have what it takes?

Lawrence, Kansas has been under siege from nonstop weather extremes.
It's either raining cats and dogs, dumping whole feet of snow, or so blisteringly hot camels are collapsing in the street. No Ultimate Frisbee has been played for weeks. Something must be done!
An enterprising group of college roommates decide to hold weatherman Ted Smith accountable for his inability to bring stability to the weather and replace him with a German Hobo by the name of Gruber Finklestein.
Creating a grass roots political or "Weatherological" movement, the roommates resort to traditional and social media to get their message across to the powers-that-be. The media powers-that-be are listening and hope to exploit the energy of the movement to increase their ratings. A debate is held, TV appearances, and an election with the roommates resorting to technologyto cheat whenever possible.
After Ted Smith looses the Weatherman Election and is replaced by Gruber Finklestein, to the astonishment of everyone, the weather extremes continue
unabated.
The CEO of Coily industries has taken notice of the "Weatherological" movement. He decides to replace weathermen who report honestly about the weather extremes with ones that take direction from him, and discredit anyone who publicly doubts the official industry line. The result is that no one is aware the fossil fuel industry is ultimately responsible for the climate problem.
With industry simultaneously pumping huge amounts of pollutants into the atmosphere and cash into the media, the climate problem spirals out of control.
The world blows up, sending the roommates to Hell for their role in the fiasco.

As the forces of Libya's new rulers continue their siege of the two remaining Gaddafi strongholds, we spoke to an eye witness. A woman from Tripoli, who asked that we call her Selma, was in Beni Walid a day ago. Speaking in a low voice in fear for her life, she said former rebels care little about the well being of civilians.
Libya's new rulers have named temporary cabinet ministers to govern the country until it is fully secured. Meanwhile their forces continue to lay siege to the few remaining Gaddafi strongholds. The National Transitional Council now controls most of the country, but still faces fierce resistance in Sirte, Bani Walid and pockets in the southern desert. After a two day ceasefire to allow residents to leave, NTC forces attempted further attacks on, the ousted colonel's hometown, Sirte. The Red Cross has warned of a humanitarian disaster as the town is running out of medical supplies, food and water. Patrick Henningsen - Managing Editor of the news website, 21st Century Wire, says there is a huge power struggle within the Transitional National Council.

U2's concert in Sarajevo was held at Koševo Stadium in Bosnia and Herzegovina on 23 September 1997. Visiting the city on their PopMart Tour, U2 became the first major artist to hold a concert in Sarajevo since the end of the Bosnian War. U2 first became involved with Sarajevo in 1993 on their Zoo TV Tour. Approached by aid worker Bill Carter about bringing attention to the Siege of Sarajevo, the band conducted nightly satellite transmissions with Bosnians during their shows. These link-ups received criticism from journalists for mixing entertainment with human tragedy. Although the conflict made it impractical for U2 to visit Sarajevo at the time, they vowed to eventually play a concert in the city. After the war ended in November 1995, they made arrangements to visit Sarajevo, and with help from United Nations ambassadors and peace-keeping troops, they performed in the city on their 1997 PopMart Tour. The band offered to play a benefit concert or small show in Sarajevo, but it was requested that they stage a full PopMart show; the performance consequently featured the tour's extravagant stage, and the band played a set list typical of the tour. The show brought together people of different ethnicities, who had previously clashed during the war, and train service was temporarily resumed to allow concertgoers to attend. Among the songs played was "Miss Sarajevo", written by U2 and Brian Eno about a beauty pageant held during the war. Although the band were displeased with their performance and lead vocalist Bono had vocal difficulties, the concert was well-received and was credited with improving morale among Bosnians, as well as helping signal a return to normalcy. The members of U2 consider the show to be among their proudest moments.
