Luxury Crossover Vehicles Gain Momentum in Growing Automotive Segment
Not exactly a car, but not quite an SUV, luxury crossovers are a fast growing segment in the automotive market. In fact, the segment makes up nearly 25% of the total U.S. luxury auto market, up from 10% a few years ago.
As consumers start heading back into showrooms, automakers continue to introduce new crossover models. To compete with overseas competition, General Motors has unveiled the Cadillac SRX. The new SRX will go head to head with crossovers from BMW, Mercedes Benz and Audi.
Industry experts expect the category to continue to grow and possibly become the largest segment of the luxury vehicle market.

ROSEMONT, Ill. - The American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons (AAOS) has incorporated the American Joint Replacement Registry (AJRR), a nonprofit organization dedicated to collecting and reporting on hip and knee joint replacement procedures. AAOS believes this proposed option is a patient safety best practice.
The goal of a national joint registry is to monitor device performance, thereby allowing early recognition of underperforming processes or devices and supporting continued clinical learning. A joint registry follows the artificial joint device throughout a recipient's lifetime in a database with information about the patient's demographics, as well as where and when the surgery took place.
The AAOS has researched and determined the best course of action for starting and administering a national joint registry, one that would include:
* privacy safeguards for patients;
* legal protections for device makers and physicians;
* a plan to begin capturing data as early as 2010; and

Automakers Introduce the Latest Safety and Convenience Technologies
Once only found in luxury automobiles, high-tech safety features such as side air-bags, key fobs and electronic stability control have made their way to the mainstream.
Now, automakers are introducing a new generation of safety and convenience technologies. In fact, with advanced air bags and day time running lights, today's cars have more features than a decade ago. And new packages, like Buick's "360 Degree Field of Vision," are offering the latest in safety technology.
For example, the 2010 Lacrosse is equipped with articulating headlamps, turn signals in the mirrors and side blind zone alerts. Other features include a remote keyless fob with push button start, rear park assist system, and heated and cooled seats.

Ignition Block System Remotely Disables Stolen Vehicles
According to the FBI, a car is stolen every three seconds; with too many of them ending up in high- speed chases.
Car chases are often uncontrollable and put the public, the police and even the thief at risk for injury. Now vehicles equipped with OnStar Ignition Block can be remotely disabled before a chase begins. The new technology connects to the vehicle in between cycles of its ignition and prevents the criminal from being able to start the car.
Law enforcement says having this ability will help to eliminate dangerous chases and prevent injury. Every month OnStar works with police to help find approximately 600 stolen vehicles through its imbedded GPS. It also has the ability to slow down a properly equipped vehicle that's already involved in a chase.

FGX International (NASDAQ: FGXI), a leading eyewear designer and marketer, celebrates 80 years of selling Foster Grant sunglasses. New York, NY - This year, back-to-school shopping won't be a headache; with new tips from Cotton Incorporated, parents can dress their children for the head of the class without breaking the bank.
"With just a few key pieces, like zippered hoodies, leggings, and denim jackets, parents can prepare their child's summer wardrobe for fall while still keeping a careful eye on their household budgets," says Linda DeFranco, Director, Product Trend Analysis, Cotton Incorporated.
Despite the economic downturn, 77% of consumers say they plan to purchase new clothing for their children this fall, according to the Cotton Incorporated Lifestyle MonitorTM survey.
The great news for consumers is that extending the life of their children's summer wardrobes for the school year doesn't have to be costly or time consuming. Supplementing what children have worn all summer with just a few heavier-weight items that can transition into the fall will ensure kids are always comfortably and appropriately dressed for the ...
White, Black and Silver Dominate the Market
July 15, 2009 -- According to the 2008 DuPont Automotive Color Popularity Report, white is the top vehicle color choice in North America for the second straight year in a row, with black and silver close behind. And experts say the slumping economy may be playing a role in these choices.
During an economic downturn, people tend to be more conservative when purchasing a new car and often avoid getting something too trendy. Owners don't want to risk getting a color they might dislike in a year so they stick to a more muted palette. But muted doesn't always mean dull. In fact, new paint finishes and additives are bringing colors to life. Traditional colors that used to have only four to five pigments in them now have seven to nine, creating a unique finish and a shift of color as the vehicle moves around.
While white, black and silver are expected to remain strong, the popularity of true chromatic colors, such as blue and green, are on the rise as ...

U.S. Automakers Look to Crossover Car Segment to Energize Sales
As automobile manufacturers move through the reorganization process, American car buyers are waiting to see what comes next. And with changing tastes and climbing fuel prices, companies are banking on the Crossover category to energize car sales and bring consumers back into showrooms.
The compact Crossover is a car-based vehicle that has the look and feel of an SUV, but the refinement of a car. Due to its rising popularity, General Motors is expecting a growth of about 60% in this category by 2013. In fact, their first vehicle introduced since the reorganization is a completely re-designed crossover SUV called the Equinox.
Expected to lead its competitors in fuel economy, the Equinox will get over 32 miles per gallon on the highway and provide a range of nearly 550 miles. It will also have 5-star safety and six airbags, delivering the best in each of those categories.

A new repayment option is available that makes monthly payments more affordable for Americans with heavy federal student loan burdens. The new Income-Based Repayment (IBR) plan protects borrowers by linking payments to income and family size. A related new program offers additional benefits to those working in public service jobs.
"We know many graduates are concerned about their ability to repay student loans in the current economic environment," said U.S. Secretary of Education Arne Duncan. "This new plan addresses the issue head on by giving them the option of a monthly payment tied to their income."
The new IBR program is available to borrowers repaying new and existing federal student loans (Direct or Federal Family Education Loans). Those with high student loan debt relative to their income are likely to be eligible for the IBR program, resulting in reduced monthly payments and, in some cases, no monthly payments.

General Motors Begins Pre-Production of the Volt
Originally unveiled as a "concept" car at the 2007 North American International Auto Show, the first pre-production Volts have rolled off the line.
Most of these vehicles will be used for the testing and validation of production and design. They will also be used to develop the final software and controls, including the way that the driver interacts with the vehicle. Some will have short lives, as they'll be crash tested after running other tests like endurance, battery drivetrain interface and windshield wiper and door function.
Approximately 80 of the extended-range electric vehicles will be produced over the next year, putting General Motors ahead of pre-production deadlines. The automaker hopes to start producing Volts for retail sale in by the end of Fall 2010.

Automaker Honors Vehicle Warranties During Restructuring Period
Although the U.S. Government has guaranteed the warranties of all General Motors vehicles during its reorganization period, some consumers are still worried about car servicing and resale value.
However, despite dealership closings and brands disappearing, GM will still have the largest dealer network in the country. In fact, thousands of dealerships will remain open and continue to provide Goodwrench warranty service. They will also continue to use skilled technicians and original equipment parts.
In addition, experts say the most important factor in a vehicle's resale value is not whether the brand still exists, but how well the car is maintained.

Mammography has been the standard for detecting breast cancer in its early stages, however dense breast tissue can make tumors difficult to find. According to the New England Journal of Medicine, women with dense breast tissue are five times more likely to develop breast cancer.
Now a new type of ultrasound treatment, the Acuson S2000 Automated Breast Volume Scanner (ABVS), may help find what traditional mammography misses. A study published in 2008 found that adding a screening ultrasound examination to routine mammography revealed 28 percent more cancers than mammography alone. Recently FDA approved, ABVS is the world's first multi-use automated breast volume ultrasound system.
This diagnostic tool provides a three dimensional view of the breast, allowing physicians to analyze from front to back, top to bottom, and side to side. The system is also more comfortable for the patient because it's non claustrophobic and radiation free.

A report released today indicates that the decline in the stock market in the last six months of 2008 worsened the retirement outlook for middle-class Americans. The analysis, conducted by Ernst & Young on behalf of the Americans for Secure Retirement coalition (ASR), shows that the retirement assets of recent and near retirees decreased between 14 and 17 percent in the last six months of 2008 alone.
The study further finds that households with a guaranteed source of retirement income outside of Social Security, such as a lifetime annuity, have the greatest chance of having enough money in retirement.
The new report is an update to Ernst & Young's 2008 Retirement Vulnerability of New Retirees report which found that almost three fifths of middle-class new retirees could expect to outlive their financial assets if attempting to maintain their pre-retirement standard of living.

American drivers may be one step closer to getting behind the wheel of an electric car. In an effort to expand battery research and expedite the introduction of electrically driven vehicles, General Motors announced the opening of The Global Battery Systems Lab.
The state-of-the-art facility is the size of seven basketball courts and is the largest in the United States. Capable of testing all current battery systems, the lab will speed the development of hybrid, plug-in and extended-range electric vehicles, including the Chevrolet Volt. In fact, more than half of the lab is dedicated to testing the electrochemical battery cells and their enclosures.
A team of more than 1,000 engineers will work on energy alternatives and advanced technologies that reduce dependence on petroleum, improve fuel economy and reduce emissions; putting cleaner, more efficient cars on the road more quickly and affordably.

There are tens of thousands of places to fish and boat in the U.S. - and for the 30th Anniversary of National Fishing and Boating Week (June 6-14), the Recreational Boating and Fishing Foundation (RBFF) is launching an online movement that encourages kids and their families to find one. And for those who might not know a bass from a trout to even the most skilled anglers, RBFF has the ultimate online fishing and boating resource, www.TakeMeFishing.org, where site visitors can learn everything they need to know to plan a day on the water. Visitors may also be eligible to win daily prizes and a boat when they play the new interactive game, "Catch A Boat."
Since its 2005 reauthorization, RBFF has played a critical role in introducing more than 500,000 youth and newcomers to fishing and boating while raising more than $6 million for state conservation efforts. Faced with a roller-coaster stock market and what seems like an unending stream of layoff announcements, most Americans (90 percent) say they're worried about the economy. No big surprise there, but is the uncertain economy affecting the way Americans take care of their health?
According to surveys conducted for health service company CIGNA, about one-third of Americans say yes, the economy has changed the way they take care of themselves. Of those, 55 percent report taking better care of their health by doing things like exercising and eating healthier.

As Americans are dialing back purchases, one wardrobe favorite has so far avoided all the cutbacks: denim. Seventy seven percent of consumers reported to the Cotton Incorporated Lifestyle MonitorTM survey that they love or enjoy wearing denim, so it should come as no surprise that the average consumer owns seven pairs of denim jeans.
Easy care is a definite advantage for consumers looking to cut back on household expenses; according to the Monitor survey, 25% of consumers have changed their laundering habits in order to save money.
These days, however, denim is no longer all about the tried and true; new technology from Cotton Incorporated called STORM DENIM(TM) makes denim water-repellent without sacrificing any of cotton's natural breathability or durability. The finish is applied as the final step, ensuring that any washes or other stylistic treatments applied are unaffected.

Transformers Star Drives the New Camaro at the Brickyard
Josh Duhamel, aka, Captain Lennox from the soon-to-be released summer blockbuster "Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen", will lead the field with the pace car in this year's Indy 500. But the star won't be driving Bumblebee, the film's heroic Autobot; instead he'll be behind the wheel of the all-new 2010 Camaro SS.
This year the historic Indianapolis Motor Speedway is celebrating its centennial, while Chevrolet celebrates its 20th time pacing "The Greatest Spectacle in Racing." The famous "Brickyard" will be reserved just for Pace Car practice and although normal pacing duties call for around 90mph, Duhamel could push the Camaro to speeds of over 100mph.

New Technology Minimizes Waste and Water Consumption
As the need for electricity in major US cities continues to grow, so does the need for generating it in an environmentally friendly way.
Water is a key element in the generation of electricity; used to run turbines, cool components and produce steam. But even water considered to be clean must be treated to remove impurities that could harm the steam generating equipment in the plant. To improve the process, new technologies like Siemens mobile water purification solutions, are focusing on minimizing waste and reducing the amount of water required to operate a plant.
The system not only lowers cost but dramatically decreases emissions and conserves natural resources. In addition, the mobile trailers don't require on-site chemical regeneration or discharge permits, making them better for the environment.

System Helps Increase Rescue Response Time and Helps Determine Injury Severity
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) have released the findings of a two year study of automobile crashes involving vehicles with Automatic Crash Notification systems. The research showed that the systems can in fact improve patient outcomes.
The technology, developed by OnStar, transmits exact locations and the characteristics of the crash from the vehicle to emergency personnel. This crucial information helps rescue crews to administer the right type of aid at the scene and provide the trauma center with valuable information as well. The system can also be used to help determine if the occupants need to go to a Level One Trauma Center or if they can get the right care at a typical emergency room.
In the last four years over seven million GM cars have been built with this new technology. And since 1996, OnStar has responded to over 100,000 crashes.
