most mothers (83%) made their infant feeding decision prior to going to the hospital to give birth. The vast majority (82%) breastfed at some point during
the first year; however, over half of the moms changed their baby's diet during the first year. Three out of four moms believe new mothers should receive
information on breastfeeding as well as infant formula so they can make an informed choice. Most mothers agree infant formula provides flexibility and

New Facility Showcases World's First Commercially Viable Flex-Ethanol Process
With gas prices continually in flux, interest in domestically produced bio-fuels like ethanol (E85) is on the rise. Today, Coskata Inc., a leading developer of alternative bio-fuels, announced the successful start-up of its semi-commercial flex-ethanol facility.
Unlike other technologies and facilities that often rely on one primary source of feedstock, the company's flex ethanol facility will be producing ethanol from numerous sources, including wood biomass, agricultural waste, construction waste and even household garbage. In addition, their patented microorganisms and bioreactor designs will produce ethanol for the same as, and in some cases less than, the cost of producing a gallon of gasoline. This new technology also reduces CO2 emissions up to 96 percent compared to gasoline.
Flex Fuel vehicles that can run on gas, E85 or a combination of both, are already available from Chevrolet, Ford, Dodge and GMC. GM has built ...
Automakers Use Noise Reduction Technology to Design Quiet Cars
Automotive upgrades once reserved for high-end cars, like air conditioning, leather and hi-tech stereo systems, now come standard in most cars. So what separates a premium car from an everyday car?
Noise reduction is one way manufacturers are raising the bar. Quiet engines, quiet exhaust systems and quiet tires are often equated with high quality vehicles. To achieve the sound of silence, companies like GM are using noise reduction engineering called Quiet Tuning. In fact, they spent hours in wind tunnels with the Buick La Crosse refining design elements like rearview mirrors and the front grill.
In addition to a quiet shape, they also kept unwanted noise from coming through glass surfaces by using laminated glass.

Defense Centers of Excellence for Psychological Health and Traumatic Brain Injury Sponsors Army Launch of Campaign, Encourages Soldiers to Reach Out
According to the Department of Veterans Affairs, more than 1.8 million service members have deployed in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom and Operation Enduring Freedom since October 2001. Psychological stress can be a common result of deployment. However, many service members and veterans deny themselves treatment for psychological wounds out of the fear that doing so would hurt their careers, embarrass them and harm their families.
The Real Warriors Campaign is a multimedia public education campaign designed to combat the barriers that often prevent service members, veterans and their families from obtaining treatment for psychological wounds, depression, PTSD and traumatic brain injury. The campaign makes reaching out easier by providing access to psychological health information and resources 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Individuals can chat ...
Everybody feels stressed at some point in their life, and there are all kinds of stressors facing us every day: deadline pressures at work, financial concerns when a 401 (k) loses value, increased workload after co-workers have been laid off, a sick child, aging parents, and money woes - just to name a few.
It's very easy to get stressed out over stress, but there are two important things to keep in mind. First, some stress is actually good for you and helps motivate you to achieve your goals, as CIGNA wellness coach Megan Thorp explains.
Second, there are resources available to help you manage stress that won't cost you a lot of money. In fact, if your employer has an employee assistance program (EAP), you can usually get several free, confidential counseling sessions over the telephone. Employee assistance programs are vastly underused because many people aren't aware that they have access to one, so check with your human resources department to see if your company offers one. New Dashboard Icon Helps Drivers Know When Tires Are Low
According to a report by the Department of Transportation, under-inflated tires increase the chances of several types of crashes. To help raise awareness and prevent these incidents, Tire Pressure Monitoring Systems have been mandated in all vehicles built since the 2008 year model.
The tire pressure monitoring system is an icon on the dashboard that alerts the driver when there's a tire running 25% below the recommended manufacturer level. And because the icon is new, automakers are making sure consumers know that the light is a warning, and in most cases a trip to the gas station to inflate the low tire or tires is all that's required. Properly inflated tires are crucial to driving safety as well as improving fuel economy, better handling and longer tire wear.
Here are a few tips to keep your tires properly inflated:
- Check tire pressure at least once a month and before going on long trips.
- Fill your tires with the pressure ...

New Technologies Help Make Coal More Environmentally Responsible
According to a recent study, the U.S. has approximately 200 years of coal reserves and 50% of America's power already comes from coal. Industry experts say clean coal plants mean less reliance on foreign sources of energy and more jobs. But how clean is "clean coal"?
Unlike the coal plants of the past that used combustion to burn coal, today's plants are using new technologies, like gasification, to transform coal into useful byproducts. Gasification is a chemical process that captures the CO2 in coal making it a more environmentally responsible form of power. In fact, the founders of Secure Energy are building a coal gasification plant in Decatur, IL that they say will be the cleanest coal plant in the world.

Smaller, More Powerful Engines Re-Write the Rules
After a decade of ruling the road, the popularity and sales of SUVs have dramatically declined over recent years. Changes in consumer preferences, roller-coaster gas prices, and going green are all contributing factors; but are Americans ready to say goodbye for good?
According to some industry experts, the SUV is here to stay. They believe consumers still want the roominess, safety and command view of the road that has become synonymous with utility vehicles but with the fuel efficiency of a smaller car. To meet this demand, traditional truck manufacturers, like GMC, are banking on versions with smaller, more powerful engines to be the heart of the market.
In fact, they've just introduced the new four-cylinder 2010 Terrain. The Terrain will get 32 mpg with the same interior utility and ride height of a traditional SUV.

Five questions you should ask before buying an annuity
While annuities can be a great choice, they are not for everyone. The Insurance Information Institute says there are 5 questions you should ask before you buy.
Annuity Basics
Annuities are long term investments sold by insurance companies. They can allow you to save money on a tax deferred basis or provide you with retirement income immediately, and they protect you against outliving your assets. There are several different types - some provide a guaranteed fixed income and others invest in the stock market and provide a variable income.
5 Questions to Consider
* Am I comfortable with the risks involved in this annuity? Some are guaranteed and some are not.
* Do I have emergency funds? If you don't have additional cash you can count on for an emergency, an annuity is not for you.
* What will I be charged if I want to withdraw my investment early? That depends on the annuity. Shop around, because they all have different fees and ...

California has the most widely adopted green winegrowing and winemaking program in the world, one that has earned the state's top environmental award. The California Sustainable Winegrowing Alliance, established by Wine Institute and the California Association of Winegrape Growers, has released a new video to show highlights of its program's earth-friendly practices embraced by the state's vintners and winegrape growers.
"Consumers are interested in knowing where and how their wines are grown and made, and the California wine community has responded by becoming a progressive advocate of environmentally conscious practices," notes Robert P. (Bobby) Koch, President and CEO of Wine Institute. "As our sustainable program develops and expands, we're seeing how responsible sustainable practices have a positive impact on the environment and in our communities."
The term "sustainability" has a specific meaning for California's vintners and winegrape growers. "Sustainable practices include the way we ...
Automakers Use Hi-Tech Tires and Aerodynamics to Improve Fuel Economy
Several automakers, including GM, Chrysler and Nissan, have already announced plans to roll out electric cars in the near future. With triple digit fuel economy claims on cars like the Chevrolet Volt, how will these manufacturers get the wheels rolling?
One factor in getting great fuel economy for electric cars is tires. The industry rule of thumb says for every 10% reduction of rolling resistance, the fuel economy improves 1 to 2 percent. Hi-tech tires, like the new Goodyear Assurance Fuel Max, feature an energy saving compound that improves the rolling resistance without sacrificing traction or tred wear.
Aerodynamics also plays an important role in increasing mileage. The more aerodynamic a car is, the easier it can cut through the air and the longer the battery will last. It is also one of the most inexpensive ways to boost fuel economy.

Automaker Plans Comeback, Refocuses on Customers and Cars
After a landmark government bailout, General Motors has emerged from bankruptcy on a mission to win back American car buyers. In an effort to change their corporate culture and re-focus on customers and cars, the revamped automaker is asking consumers to "Tell Fritz".
The new campaign allows people to go online and send their comments to company executives, express their views and give input on the direction of the new GM. In addition, executives, including CEO Fritz Henderson, recently invited consumers to meet them and drive all of the latest models at the company's Michigan Proving Grounds.
And the new commitment to customers may be paying off. The company recently announced they would be building 60,000 more vehicles this year than originally planned, and have recalled over a thousand previously laid off workers to help build them.

National Asian Longhorned Beetle Awareness Month
Washington, DC (August) - Trees are vital to our communities. They impact our quality of life and provide shade, beauty and privacy; however, a harmful and invasive insect called the Asian Longhorned Beetle (ALB) is killing hardwood trees in cities in several states. August is National ALB Awareness Month and Federal and State agencies are asking communities to help protect trees and forests by actively checking for and reporting signs of this devastating beetle.
The ALB is about an inch long and has a shiny black body with white spots and long black and white striped antennas. It's easy to spot, as is its destruction. The ALB larvae bore perfectly round, dime-sized holes in hardwood trees, including all species of maple ash, elm, horse chestnut, poplar and willow. Infested trees are starved of critical water and nutrients and will ultimately die.
First discovered in New York in 1996, ALB infestations have been detected in cities and counties in ...
Tips for Making Sure Your Car Has the Right Brakes
Brakes are one of the most important safety features on a car, so making sure a car has the right brakes is essential. And although new cars have to meet braking standards, replacement brake parts are not regulated to any specific performance or design standards.
Today's vehicles are equipped with unique braking systems and installing components not tested and designed for your particular vehicle may impact other parts of the system and cause problems. Taking your vehicle back to the dealer for brake service is one way to make sure you have the right components installed. Original manufacturer trained technicians go through extensive brake service training, including the vehicle's complex braking technologies such as anti-lock brake and electronic stability control systems.
Industry experts also recommend looking for a certification mark on brake products to ensure that they are intended to meet your vehicle's performance needs.

General Motors Facility to Manufacture Battery Packs for Electric Vehicles, Create More than 100 Jobs
The Volt is getting one step closer to lighting up the road. In an effort to deliver more fuel efficient vehicles to American drivers, GM is investing $43 million to manufacture lithium ion battery packs for its extended-range electric vehicles.
The new battery plant in Brownstown Township, Michigan will be the first in the U.S. operated by a major automaker. Utilizing part of the grant money awarded by the Obama administration, the investment includes the renovation and lease costs of a 160,000-square-foot facility, new machinery and equipment. Equipment installation at the site will begin in August and the first batteries are slated to be completed in early 2010 to support the Volt's launch.
In addition to manufacturing the batteries and components for electric cars, the new facility will create more than 100 new jobs.

Americans Across the Country Head to Local Dealerships, Car Sales on the Rise
After months of declining car sales and closing dealerships, the auto industry may be getting a second wind. With the success of "Cash for Clunkers", cars sales are on the rise.
Officially known as the Car Allowance Rebate System, the program rewards people for turning in older gas guzzlers for new, more fuel efficient vehicles. Americans across the country can get a $3,500 to $4,500 voucher to replace their clunker. The exact credit depends on how much more fuel efficient the new vehicle is.
Editors at Edmunds.com have been flooded with questions from readers about who and what qualifies for the program. And despite a number of rules and regulations, experts say "Cash for Clunkers" has been the most successful of all the government stimulus plans this year.
