National Poison Prevention Week is March 15 - 21, 2009
Each year, more than 2.4 million poison exposures are reported to the nation's poison control centers and nearly two-thirds of those calls involve children. Most poisonings occur when parents or caregivers are not paying attention. It's important to react quickly when a poisoning occurs.
The most dangerous potential poisons are medicines, cleaning products, antifreeze, windshield wiper fluid, pesticides, furniture polish, gasoline, kerosene and lamp oil. And with Americans spending more time in their cars commuting and shuttling children to activities, accidental poison exposure in vehicles is a scary possibility.
For safety precautions, drivers should always keep the nationwide phone number for Poison Control handy, 800-222-1222. And for OnStar subscribers, the in-vehicle communications service will now route calls about poisonings directly to Poison Control. Once connected the Poison Control specialists will help the victims decide the best ...
On the second annual World Glaucoma Day (March 12), leading global glaucoma experts are working together to help educate patients diagnosed with glaucoma and those who may be at risk for the condition. Glaucoma is a worldwide epidemiological challenge affecting approximately four percent of the global population, with an estimated 50 percent of glaucoma cases remaining undiagnosed. Research shows that by 2010, an estimated 60.5 million people globally will be living with either angle closure glaucoma (ACG) or primary open angle glaucoma (POAG).
During World Glaucoma Day, experts across the globe are encouraging patients, those individuals potentially at risk for glaucoma, and eye health professionals to utilize resources from sources like the All Eyes on Glaucoma(tm) campaign to recognize and understand the devastating consequences of glaucoma - the world's second leading cause of blindness. The All Eyes on Glaucoma program seeks to help raise awareness globally on World Glaucoma Day and throughout ...
American Heart Association expands national fats awareness campaign with "Better Fats Sisters" DALLAS (May 21, 2008) - Fewer than half of Americans know that the "better" fats (monounsaturated and polyunsaturated) can help reduce their risk of heart disease, according to a recent survey by the American Heart Association. "Heart disease remains the No. 1 killer of Americans. Consumers have heard a lot about the "bad" fats lately and what not to eat. That's why it's important for people to know the "better" fats and foods where they're found so they can lower their risk for heart disease," said Robert H. Eckel, M.D., past president of the American Heart Association, chair of its trans fat task force and professor of medicine at the Anschutz Medical Campus of the University of Colorado Denver. Facing the Fats with the Better Fats Sisters: Your Heart Helpers The American Heart Association is introducing two new ...
Pickup Trucks Represent Second Largest Segment of the Auto Market
Most people think of small cars and big gas mileage when it comes to hybrid vehicles. But, what about those with a need for more space, utility, and brawniness? Enter the hybrid pickup truck.
Hybrid pickup trucks are unique because they have exceptional fuel economy, but drive and are fueled the same way as a normal pickup truck. While they are usually more expensive than their non-hybrid counterparts, from a cost-benefit analysis, experts say that it's really not much of a premium.
Still a powerful punch, not only do the new Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra hybrid pickups have fuel economy that's 50% better in the city, they offer over 300 horsepower and 1,500 pounds payload - as well as 6,100 pounds of towing, so you don't have to compromise on a full-size truck. In fact, these hybrid pickup trucks have the same mileage as many popular 4-cylinder mid-size cars. Experts say the versatile pickup truck is here to stay, as the ...
A minimally invasive interventional radiology treatment -- focal cryoablation that freezes prostate tumors -- proves as effective as surgery but without the side effects of sexual and urinary dysfunction. The so-called “male lumpectomy” can be considered a first-line treatment for patients of all risk levels. Instead of removing the entire prostate or using radiation on the entire prostate, interventional radiologists can find out where the cancer is and just destroy the cancer.
Interventional radiologists, using imaging for guidance, insert a probe through the skin that circulates extremely cold gas to freeze and destroy the cancerous tissue. Treating only the tumor instead of the whole prostate gland is a major and profound departure from the current thinking about prostate cancer.
Additionally, the use of a 3-D mapping biopsy provides superior information on the extent and grade of prostate cancer as opposed to the current standard TRUS biopsy.
ABOUT INTERVENTIONAL ...
Freezing kidney tumors, using a safe minimally invasive interventional radiology treatment that kills the cancer 100 percent effectively without surgery, should be the first treatment option for all individuals with tumors that are 4 centimeters or smaller, and this treatment is a viable option for people with larger tumors. Interventional cryoablation is as effective as laparoscopic surgery, the current gold standard treatment. Eliminating cancer at such an early stage is significant news for kidney cancer patients. Interventional cryoablation is a minimally invasive outpatient procedure. Patients leave the hospital with only a bandaid and return to normal activity almost immediately vs. the current common treatment of laparoscopic surgery with several days in the hospital and two to four weeks of recovery.
ABOUT INTERVENTIONAL RADIOLOGY
Interventional radiologists are board-certified physicians who specialize in minimally invasive, targeted treatments that offer less risk, less pain and less ...
Power Expert Explains How a Smart Grid Can Help Consumers Save Money, Clean Up the Environment and Create More Jobs
President Obama has been talking about the need for a smart grid to help keep America sustainable and competitive and in fact, the current proposed economic stimulus package includes $54 billion for renewable energy, energy efficiency and smart grid projects. What exactly does that all mean and how will it affect your area?
A smart grid delivers electricity from suppliers to consumers using digital technology to save energy and cost.
Our current grid resembles a huge network of electrical roads and highways – some are high speed, with electrical traffic covering far distances and others covering shorter distances moving at a slower pace. For this grid to work efficiently, electrical traffic needs to be kept at a steady, consistent pace throughout the grid. Too much “traffic” at one particular time can cause jams or bottlenecks in the system.

In today's tough automotive market, superior customer service can often translate into needed revenue for both car dealers and automakers. In fact, J.D. Power and Associates reports that exceptional service satisfaction enhances dealer and manufacturer profitability by improving customer retention even as sales decline.
The 29th annual study examined satisfaction among car owners who visit a service department for maintenance or repair work. Rankings, based on dealer performance during the first three years of ownership, were determined by service quality, service initiation, service advisor, service facility and vehicle pickup. Results revealed that the highest-performing brands retained more than 80 percent of their customer maintenance and repair dollars within their dealer network, compared to less than 60 percent for lowering-performing brands.
Lexus ranked highest with dealer service, moving up from fourth position in 2008. Jaguar, BMW, Cadillac and Acura helped round out the top five, ...

Certified Used Cars do Well in Down Market
It's no secret that new car sales in the U.S. have been in a steep decline for several months as people worry about their financial future. But many of us still need a new, if not "brand new" car, and interest is peaking on used cars, as people look to replace their current vehicles. And the category of certified pre-owned vehicles are doing unexpectedly and exceptionally well.
Unlike regular used cars, certified pre-owned cars are attractive, because they have an added warranty of some kind. But beware, say experts, not all warranties are equal. Any used car dealer can claim that a used car is certified and offer an extended service agreement. Intellichoice.com recommends you look for a vehicle that's backed by a warranty from the original manufacturer, because that means the vehicle has been inspected and refurbished to "like new" standards determined by that manufacturer.
As you might expect, certified used vehicles often cost more than the equivalent ...
New Cars Feature Low Energy, Design-Friendly Lighting
While the exterior of the car almost always gets the most attention, car designers will tell you that the interior is just as, if not more, important.
That's why many new high-style cars are featuring light emitting-diodes (LEDs), frequently found in the taillights, daytime running lights and turn signals, as part of the interior. With its subtle ice blue ambient lighting, the Buick LaCrosse is just one example that was introduced at the Detroit Auto Show.
Compared to traditional lighting, LEDs are more flexible and can go in places other than the ceiling of your car. They can improve visibility by illuminating previously harder to light areas, like foot wells and door handles, without distracting the driver.

February 10, 2009 -- According to the National Safety Council, vehicle death rates are three times higher at night than during the day. And while car manufacturers continue to make safer cars, new technology is helping to light the way.
Almost 90% of a driver's reaction depends on vision and experts say more light is always better. High Intensity Discharge lighting, also known as HID, delivers three times the light of a conventional halogen headlight. The light is also used in a more efficient way, increasing overall luminosity and improving nighttime visibility.
LED lights are another alternative for safer lighting solutions. Unlike conventional light sources, LEDs reach full brightness in a few thousandths of a second; giving drivers more reaction time when the car in front of them hits the brakes. In addition to being brighter, these lights are also smaller, lighter and use less electricity.

The automotive marketplace is becoming more and more competitive every year, providing customers with plenty of options. According to research from R.L. Polk and Company, nearly half of all Americans are easily swayed about their personal transportation and end up buying a completely different brand or model car each time.
But while analyzing over 9.5 million retail purchases last year and tracking to see if customer loyalty was to stay with a manufacturer within a brand, there were some winners. General Motors won big for overall loyalty to manufacturer by retaining 62.5% of its owners who bought cars in 2008. Chevrolet won four individual model awards for their vehicle categories proving loyalty to some automotive brands may be more than skin deep.
Polk suggests, if carmakers want to maintain their owner's loyalty, they need to focus on three things: maintaining quality, creating brand excitement, and improving technology.

Though one in three women in this country has some form of heart disease, women are still not receiving the same in-hospital treatment that men do for heart attacks and as a result, may be more likely to die.
This disparity in care is a big concern. For example, women are 14% less likely than men to be treated with aspirin following a heart attack. Now more than ever, women need to understand their risk factors for heart disease and advocate for their own heart health.

At this year’s Detroit Auto Show, nearly 50 cars made their debut and not a single one was a gasoline powered pick-up or truck based SUV. Rather, crossovers were in the main spotlight.
Built on lighter car frames and getting better fuel economy – crossovers like the RAV-4 from Toyota and the Honda CR-V are expected to play a big part in the future, as they replace heavier truck-based, SUVs, while maintaining the style, flexibility and accommodation that made them so popular over the last 15 years.

Are Americans finally ready to downsize their rides for good? With up to a year long wait for the pint-size Smart car and the continued sales growth of the fashionable Mini brand, downsizing could be more than a fad. The switch to smaller, more fuel-efficient cars is something the US automakers are also working on.
At the Detroit Auto Show, General Motors bid for a piece of the growing segment by announcing production of the Chevrolet Spark. The all-new four-door mini-car, coming in at 11.5 feet in length, will be the company's smallest car to date. And with the unveiling of the new Ford Ka at the Paris Auto Show, Ford is considering manufacturing an American version of the popular European mini-car.
The Spark was originally shown as a concept at the 2007 New York Auto Show and GM's website was flooded with over 2 million votes to make it a real car. Sales will begin in Europe in the first quarter of 2010, followed by the US in 2011.

Economic woes and a failing health care system mean more people than ever before are relying on emergency care at a time when the nation is receiving a C- grade for its support of emergency patients, according to a Report Card on the State of Emergency Medicine. For every parent who wants the very best for their children, there is one gift designed to provide higher self-confidence, better academic results and life-long achievement--early learning skills.
Numerous infant studies have proven that early readers have more confidence, higher self-esteem and generally perform better in school and later in life. According to a national panel of reading specialists and educators, most of the nation's reading problems could be eliminated if children began reading at an earlier age.
Dr. Robert C. Titzer is an expert infant researcher who has taught tens of thousands of babies and toddlers worldwide to read for nearly twenty years. He says the current practice of starting to teach reading skills in Kindergarten is too late. "A child has only one natural window for language, from 3 months to age 5. The earlier a child is taught to read, the better they will read and the more likely they will enjoy it..."

With the holidays just around the corner, it's time to start hanging wreaths and stringing lights. And despite a dismal retail forecast this holiday season, you can still make your home look festive for less.
Experts say the first step is deciding how you want to decorate your home and looking at what lighting options are available. One way to save is to swap your old string of lights with a newer LED version. These lights last up to ten times longer and use 75% less energy, which translates into lower energy bills. And LED lights run at a much cooler temperature than standard bulbs, providing greater peace of mind.
Another tip is to identify the rooms your family spends the most time in and replace some bulbs with enhanced color compact fluorescent bulbs to save energy while highlighting holiday decorations. Other ideas include using rechargeable decorations and holiday surprises when entertaining such as light up table runners and coasters.

They take the hit for us in the name of safety. And while biofedelic anthropomorphic test devices, better known as crash test dummies, can't talk, they speak volumes about how crash forces impact human beings.
Human-like crash test dummies, like General Motors' Hybrid III, replicate the human form in overall weight, size and proportion. These high-tech dummies actually "feel for us," using sophisticated technologies that gauge the potential for head, neck, chest, spine and leg injuries. The injury measurements retrieved from them are then used by vehicle safety engineers to design safety in a car.
Life-saving features - like three-point safety belts, airbags, and protective vehicle structures - have been developed, tested and refined with the help of these vinyl-skinned, data-collecting humanoids. The contribution of crash test technology to the safety of motor vehicles has been substantial and continues to lead the way to smarter, safer cars.
