Child singing megastar Bobby Breen is the lead in Hawaii Calls, a masterful musical by veteran director Edward F. Cline. Bobby Breen was a box office smash in the nineteen thirties and his magical soprano voice is still a marvel to hear. Breen plays a dirty shoeshine boy who dreams of a better life. He decides to stow away on a ship to Honolulu with his good friend Pua, a native Hawaiian. The treat of the Hawaiian themed story is that Breen performs several classic songs native to the island paradise. Clearly much time and money was spent on the musical diversions in the film, and it did not go to waste. Hawaii Calls is one of Breen’s best films.
