Maria loves Filipe and is desired by his nephew in Northeastern Brazil in the late 1930s
Set in the backlands of Northeastern Brazil in the late 1930s, this film tells the story of Maria and her loves. Maria loses her parents in a bloody massacre, when soldiers invade their farm in pursuit of a gang of outlaws her parents have given shelter. She falls in love with Filipe, a horse tamer who lives nearby with his nephew, Coriolano, who also falls in love with her. Filipeâs jealousy destroys both passions and pulls them apart. The three meet again in an unexpected ending, in which they each find happiness in their own way.
