Can Google teach small business a lesson?

It seems to me that for many businesses, it is about coming into the market, wiping out the competition and then raises the prices and fighting viscously to protect what you have. But despite annihilating the opposition Google have said lets open every up. So if it is working for them what can a small business learn from google's business strategy. What business ideas can we gain from Google as SME's? Can we use open source models to make things work for us?
