Dealmakers know that strategic alliances are key to post-acquisition returns, but a recent study in the Harvard Business Review suggests alliances fail 60% to 70% of the time. Establishing alliances can be challenging, pricey and sometimes even risky, but the payoffs for some companies such as IBM Corp. outweigh the costs involved.
