Celtic The Irish Connection begins with The Great Hunger of 1845-51. In the space of only a few short years, The Famine killed one million people in Ireland and a million more emigrated as refugees. 100,000 of these displaced Irish escaped to a new life in Scotland, mainly to the Glasgow and Lanarkshire areas of The West. For several decades following The Famine, these refugees were joined by thousands more Irish fleeing to Scotland for work, and their very survival.
These Irish emigrants entered an environment that was traditionally anti-Irish and anti Catholic. The deprivation and abject poverty they left behind in Ireland was continued amidst the destitute and deprived circumstances and environment experienced in Scotland.
This is their story....
