Howard Hughes (Hell’s Angels) was ever a controversial filmmaker and The Outlaw is no exception. Exposing the super-sexy Jane Russell to audiences for the first time, Hughes let the camera focus on her ample bust when she was half clothed many times in the picture. This was absolutely scandalous for 1943, but as was often the case with Hughes and public outcry, the film was a box office smash. Aside from the buxom beauty, the film centered on Billy the Kid and Doc Holliday as they run from bandits out to get them. Billy immediately falls in love with Russell, and their rocky relationship is driving force for the story. A poignant look at the evolution of sex in film, The Outlaw is well worth seeing for more than just skin.
