Featured here is an application which won the Grand Prize in the Emerging Markets category in the Nokia Calling All Innovators (www.callingallinnovators.com) contest in 2008. This application, named Nanao Ganesh, allows farmers in India to establish remote contact with distant, modem-equipped electric irrigation pumps, to check on power supply and pump operation without the need to travel long distances. It does it through voice call initiated through even the very basic Nokia phones such as Nokia 1100. Through this call farmers can control the starter panel of the pumps through a special modem which interfaces with 440 volt starter switches.
