Dit keer in Utrecht. De avond viel zacht over de Oude Gracht, en de lantaarns spiegelden als gouden tranen in het donkere water. Ik zat op een terrasje toen ze voorbij wandelde. Ze droeg een lange jas en haar lach vermengde zich met het geluid van een straatmuzikant verderop. Ze leek uit een oud verhaal te zijn gestapt, een personage uit een boek dat ik nooit had gelezen maar altijd had willen kennen. Ze wees naar de oude gevels, haar vingers volgden de lijnen van de geschiedenis. Ze was geen toerist; ze was een deel van het tafereel, een levend geworden schilderij. Ze was het geheim dat de stad je alleen toefluistert als je echt luistert. Op dat moment was ze Utrecht: tijdloos, vol verhalen en een klassieke schoonheid. Twee steden, twee totaal verschillende werelden, en toch paste ze in beide perfect. Hoe kon dat? En toen, op een avond terwijl ik door een naamloze stad in een ander land liep, begreep ik het. Ik zag een vrouw die met dezelfde kalmte een drukke markt overstak. Ze heette geen Sanne, maar ze had dezelfde energie. Het ging niet om de stad, het ging niet om de plek. Het was de magie die iemand als Sanne overal achterlaat. Een onzichtbare, zijden draad die ze om de wereld spant, die chaos in rust verandert en het heden verbindt met de geschiedenis. De derde stad was geen plaats op de kaart. De derde stad was overal waar zij was. Want Sanne de Vries was niet alleen de rust of het verhaal. Ze was het wonder zelf.
