Jeff Sailer—Toledo Zoo’s Wild Walkabout: Bringing the wonders down under to Toledo The Toledo Zoo’s newest Executive Director, Jeff Sailer, will be discussing this year’s seasonal exhibit at the Toledo Zoo, especially all that has gone into designing and executing this project. Jeff came to Toledo from New York City where he served as Director of City Zoos and the Facility Director of the Central Park Zoo. He also was the Curator of Animals at the Central Park Zoo and the Curator of Birds of the Miami Metrozoo. For the past 18 years, Jeff has been engaged in ornithological research, in particular, sea ducks and fruit pigeons. His research has focused on questions concerning ecomorphology, anatomy, biomechanics, community ecology, biogeography, and conservation of these birds. His research has taken him to Long Island, NY; Panama; Mexico; the Bahamas; Samoa; Kingdom of Tonga; Fiji; India; Singapore; Australia; and Papua New Guinea. Jeff has also worked extensively with this taxon in aviary settings and in museum collections.

This is the story of our first Green Sea Turtle rescue in 1998; we named this turtle 'Chance'. As this was our first rescue we were not sure what to do other than to remove the fishing line that was cutting down nearly to the bone. In hindsight we realized that this turtle more than likely needed to have his fin amputated. Since that time Deep Ecology has rescued 13 turtles that required amputation due to fishing line. Almost all of these sea turtles were from the North Shore.

This pilot program itself would be able to answer other questions such as how wind turbines would survive tropical storms and how they would affect the ecology of the site. The module focused on points of view pertaining to 1) how bodies/selves function, 2) how dance skills are cultivated and 3) how moving bodies/people relate to the larger environment. Based on these principles, her module explored more deeply how the physical and contemplative practice of dance serves as a medium for the investigation of the environment, how an investigation of the physical landscape of body/self deepens the understanding of the environment and how a deeper understanding of ecology/environment informs our understanding of our physicalized self. Information based on human and natural information is quantified digitally and communicated in the form of ambient display by computer controlling the color of red cabbage, thus creating a novel media that is alive. This display shows significant organic and human aspects of an individual life, ecology, or society and enriches the semantics between mapping of the living organisms to such considerations. The control of this display is achieved with a control system which monitors the pH level to change the color of the red cabbage. This research was not aimed at only producing a working prototype, but also through the design and experimentation results to construct wide issues of design patterns and frameworks for new types of empathetic living media.
