Season 4 | Episode 21
In this episode of Amsterdam Talk, we talk with Richard Blank CEO of Telemarketing Company in Costa Rica. Betting on yourself is a powerful concept. It means having confidence in your own abilities and potential. It’s about setting goals, taking risks, and investing in your own growth and development, even when the path isn’t guaranteed.
Here are a few key aspects to consider:
Self-Belief: Trust that you have the skills and drive to achieve your goals. This belief can be a strong motivator and help you push through challenges.
Setting Goals: Define what you want to achieve and create a plan to reach those objectives. Having clear goals gives you direction and helps measure progress.
Continuous Learning: Invest in acquiring new skills and knowledge. The more you learn and adapt, the better equipped you’ll be to face new opportunities and challenges.
Resilience: Be prepared for setbacks and failures. Betting on yourself means you’ll face obstacles, but resilience helps you recover and keep moving forward.
Taking Risks: Sometimes, you need to step out of your comfort zone. Calculated risks can lead to significant rewards, and they’re often necessary for personal growth.
Self-Care: Take care of your mental and physical well-being. Betting on yourself also means ensuring you’re in a good place to pursue your goals effectively.

they have to accept it. If they really want to let you live that sort of life, Rod, that you're looking to live. Okay. So you went down to Tucson, Arizona, and you... Let me make sure I got it right. So you got a communications, you got a communication and a Spanish degree from University of Arizona. So you did that. Oh yeah. That was a fun degree. I have an undergrad of communication as well. You know, that's a fun degree. Hey, just if anyone follows Wildcat basketball during those years, I was fortunate enough to be a roommate of the great Khalid Reeves. And also post-grad, I lived with Ben Davis when he was a rookie for the Suns. And so just some very good shout outs to some cool Wildcats that had lived with me. You still speak to them? Oh, yeah. Oh, yeah. And... You know, it's interesting when you're seeing some of the greatest guards in the nation that's on ESPN highlights, and you're just sitting there playing, you know, Street Fighter with them and hanging out and cooking food and just chilling, watching Bruce Lee movies.
Life Decisions and Metaphors
responsibly in-state tuition was very inexpensive in Arizona during the nineties. And so I was not dropping a lot of dough to go to school and living in Tucson was very cheap. That was a lot of fun. Okay. And so I was being somewhat responsible and at least I was going to make myself marketable and The naysayers and the great believers are the ones that don't want you to throw up on a roller coaster. But unless you get on there and you do the loop-de-loops, you're never going to know how to live, especially if you wait and get in the first cart. That's even better. I'm willing to let two or three people pass me so I can sit in the front row. And that's drinking life. And when I look back at my young self and the sort of big boy decisions that I was making that I needed to carry the rest of my life, My intuition was speaking because I was too young to understand the experience and the value of it. I had no idea where this was going to go, but I could capture this light and this energy.
Maintaining Composure Amidst Chaos
But sometimes maturity goes with having conversations with people that you don't want to have. And the truth may hurt when you do discuss certain advertising or where the market is going or what's happening with the internet. And It's just how it's, it's relayed and how you listen and how you can once again, receive certain energy, which may be negative at times and try to readjust tones. That's what doctors do or attorneys can do. They're used to people screaming and cursing and spitting and kicking tires, but these individuals need to sew hearts, win cases and as pilots are land planes when people are screaming around them. And so you need to, you need to respect the individual that has the straight line amongst the chaos
Nostalgia and Technology: A Humorous Take
And the less that we do those sort of human interactions, the more alone we're going to feel. It's quite the shame because when you look at old movies from the 60s and 70s, no one's looking down. Unless they're reading a newspaper or book or something. Everyone's looking around and seeing what's happening in the scene. Comment on it. Participate in it. Get involved. Today... It's almost like the movie, The Breakfast Club. It would have never existed. They all would have been on their phones the whole time. And when I walk downstairs and I'm in the lunchroom, you'll have the tables of four or five people sitting together and each one of them is watching something differently. And as much as I tease about it and break their back and talk about what it was like in the 80s, and they're like, okay, okay, grandpa.
Nostalgia for the Social Past
And when I walk downstairs and I'm in the lunchroom, you'll have the tables of four or five people sitting together and each one of them is watching something differently. And as much as I tease about it and break their back and talk about what it was like in the 80s, and they're like, okay, okay, grandpa. whatever you're right. I'll just go play some pinball. I leave you alone. And it's almost, it's, it's sad because there was nothing better that you get that knock on the door, the doorbell ringing and you'd run there and it's your buddy that wants to go ride bikes or climb trees with you. And so those are the memories, my friend. And I'm trying to still instill that with the people today.

The Decline of Human Interaction
I see people that wait in line at the supermarket so they can have the interaction with the person compared to doing self-checkout. There's some people that like that experience and that's why they go to that store or they've known Betty for 15 years and it's part of their routine. And the less that we do those sort of human interactions, the more alone we're going to feel. It's quite the shame because when you look at old movies from the 60s and 70s, no one's looking down. The Journey to Starting a Call Center
So what made you start this, you know, your business up, your company? What made you start your company? I was 35 and I was getting old and I was trying, you know, when I left my friend's company, I did make phone call for my family real estate business in the United States and then the market fell out. And so I had a little bit saved. I had some knowledge and I had the desire. And one of my friends says, hey, Ricardo, why don't you just start a call center? And I said, oh, in Gaza, am I going to do this? How are you going to get to that level? And so, yeah. The first thing I was taught was to slow down, calm down. What can we do? What can we control? Well, I always believe in home court advantage. Let's be realistic. And so someone needed to have space that I could rent a section of, like an internet cafe. So there was a blended call center where I could rent a turnkey station for premium, but I could scale accordingly and they're responsible, the internet and the rent and everything. I can come and go like a plane seat

Oh, yeah. Oh, yeah. And... There's some people that like that experience and that's why they go to that store or they've known Betty for 15 years and it's part of their routine. And the less that we do those sort of human interactions, the more alone we're going to feel. It's quite the shame because when you look at old movies from the 60s and 70s, no one's looking down. Unless they're reading a newspaper or book or something. Everyone's looking around and seeing what's happening in the scene. Comment on it. Participate in it. Get involved. Today... It's almost like the movie, The Breakfast Club. It would have never existed. They all would have been on their phones the whole time.

Being True to Yourself: A Personal Triumph
And the fact that I had done something like this, it might seem selfish or egocentric. But how could it be egocentric, gentlemen, if I'm feeding over 100 families a month and giving them their job security? The fact that I fell in love and married someone in Costa Rica and built a business with her, learned a second language, followed my dreams. Just because I'm a dreamer and I'm a Renaissance man, it doesn't mean that I'm different. It's just I'm once again being exceptionally true to myself. And so I can look at myself in the mirror at the end of the day and raise my head up high, give myself five and say, good job, Richie. You did it again.

Anyone can list the best players in the NBA, but basketball is as much about chemistry as it is talent. Within each of the league's 30 teams is a hierarchy, and how well each of the five players on the court understands
Here's an episode of the syndicated Romper Room and Friends, as aired over WFLD Channel 32. The host was Miss Molly McCloskey, and featured are puppets UpUp, Nutro the robot, Kimble, Paddington Bear and Granny Cat. (Sorry - no Do Bee this time.)
Technical note: Audio was a little rough - attempt was made to clean it up a bit but it's still fairly hissy and also fades out at times.
This was at the point where the Metromedia era was coming into full bloom, with the logo set in a very closely-kerned Helvetica Bold - but bumpers continued to show the old Field era logo.
Includes:
Early Metromedia-era 32 ID (voiceover by Jim Barton)
Opening titles, followed by UpUp having trouble with barbell, a sequence with Nutro (the world's first nutritional robot) involving a guessing game, and Kimble in an outdoor segment with soccer players.
Bumper (with message created by airplane in sky)
Super Cartoon Sunrise promo for Tom & Jerry for 7:00am, The Flintstones for 7:30am, Woody Woodpecker for 8:00am and Popeye for 8:30am (voiceover by Dr. Don Rose)
PSA for Junior Achievement with Vince Evans of the Chicago Bears
Afternoon Fun promo for Inspector Gadget for 3:00pm, He-Man and the Masters of the Universe for 3:30pm and The Flintstones for 4:00pm (however, the end indicates a 2:00pm start - huh?) (voiceover by Dr. Don Rose)
PSA for Chicago Department of Human Services (teen going to play basketball and give young child a helping hand)
Another Jingle Bumper with Field-era 32 logo and "In Chicago, the kids' choice is Channel 32!" (that's not Miss Molly shown in the bumper - is it Miss Sally, who was on Romper Room before this new version took over?)
Return bumper, with sky message in reverse
Miss Molly catches Paddington Bear reading book with three children alongside him, leading to reading of "Paddington's Lucky Day"; followed by UpUp at San Diego Wild Animal Park to see the gorillas; Miss Molly, Nutro and children playing a game of "Freeze"; and Granny Cat showing Kimble how to use his muscles.
"We will return" sky bumper
Promo for Inspector Gadget (with mustache only featured in the pilot) for 3:00pm (voiceover by Jim Barton)
PSA for YMCA - "Y Indian Guides"
Promo for He-Man and the Masters of the Universe for 3:30pm (ending voiceover by Jim Barton)
PSA for Dairy Council - "Balance in Everything"
"Romper Room" Field-era jingle bumper
Return bumper
Miss Molly continues Paddington story, after which UpUp, emerging from behind tree, complains about not having brothers or sisters, leading to a song; afterwards, Miss Molly does her Magic Mirror demonstration, and concludes the program on behalf of the regulars (including Do-Bee, whom we do not see in this edition).
"Romper Bomper, Stomper boo, tell me tell me, tell me do. Magic mirror, tell me today - did all my friends have fun at play?"
Miss Molly "sees" Sherry, Tiffany, Ryan, Thomas, Brett, Carol, Julia, Pat, Heidi, Leslie, and you!
Ending credits:
Executive Producers - Sally Claster Gelbard, John Claster
Directed by Jon Stiehm
Associate Producer - Terri Braudes Akman
Cast:
"Miss Molly" - Molly McCloskey
"Kimble" - Bruce Edward Hall
"UpUp" - Bruce Edward Hall
"Do Bee" - Candy Claster
"Paddington Bear" - Candy Claster
"Granny Cat" - Molly McCloskey
Story Song Man - Carmino Ravosa
Puppets Built at Great Jones Studio By John Orberg and Matthew Stoddart
(program fades out at this point)
Promo for Mork & Mindy for 5:00pm and What's Happening for 5:30pm (voiceover by Jim Barton)
Station ID / promo for Three's Company for 6:30pm (voiceover by Jim Barton)
Interesting to note that there are no real commercials in this broadcast - just PSAs and promos.
This aired on local Chicago TV on Sunday, October 16th 1983 during the 6:00am to 6:30am timeframe.

Work from home virtual telemarketers need composure and maturity.INspired INsider Podcast guest Richard Blank Costa Rica's Call Center
Richard Blank: For my clients.
Dr. Jeremy Weisz: Let's talk about culture for a second and when, when Covid hit, again, like you have the tools and opportunity to do things virtually, obviously, cause people call you, you're a call center and you're doing things virtually, but what about in house? Did things change at all with Covid? Did you find that more people were able to work from home, Um, and then, you know, or did they come back in the office?
Dr. Jeremy Weisz: How'd that transition look like? Kind. During Covid and then, and then post Covid.
Richard Blank: It's an excellent question, Jeremy. Well, nobody knew what was happening. You're a doctor. I mean, nobody really knew what was happening when Covid first did. So the Costa Rican labor law gave me up to 50% capacity in my call center.
Richard Blank: I chose to make it 20%. I did need people here for PCI compliance onboarding. Something happens at home. They can have a turnkey station. What we lost is the camaraderie. This is a very social environment. I do believe in synergy and unlike certain vocations where people can just sit in a cubicle and get their job done, this is a very open floor plan where people were feeding off of the energy and we're all public speakers.
Richard Blank: And so it really reduced my effectiveness in regards to onsite training where I could just walk the rows and, and stand there and give someone shadowing or some sort of positive reinforcement. But I also saw the isolation side of it. People once again, loved coming to work to eat lunch and spend time with their best friend.
Richard Blank: And we also had some people here that were so influential that if you sat next to 'em, you were definitely gonna be better. Like, you know, when you're playing basketball, if you play with someone better than you, you're probably gonna hit better shots. And so the positive side of it has a lot of people that lived far away could save their time and money, spend more time with their family.
Richard Blank: And once again, they showed some sort of composure and maturity to be able to work from home, even though we are able to monitor their work. And so it was really a give or a take. You and I, what we had to do was just adjust accordingly. And so besides just following the labor laws, we had to open up a lot more communication channels.
Richard Blank: We had to be a lot more active. And in the best way that we can try to continue our company culture of empathy, of caring about the agent, letting them know that we're still investing in them and they're not expendable, are we capable of doing it? Sure. And I think everybody needs to adjust to this virtual world.
Richard Blank: It's, it's a shame, my friend, because I think a lot of it we're losing a certain artist perspective of what it's like to do something live in front of people. Compared to just doing something virtually. And so as long as people, once again, can make sure if they're on a Zoom call to represent themselves properly or if they are working with somebody, just take the extra efforts to let them know that you're thinking about them and that you support them in that sort of way and, and those sort of messages.
Richard Blank: Doctor, as you know, go a long.

B2B tips on how to upsell on a telemarketing call. INspired INsider Podcast guest Richard Blank Costa Rica's Call Center
Richard Blank: In Chicago
Dr. Jeremy Weisz: that, you know, there's, there's such an art and a science to this and you talk about upsells, right? How do you teach upsells when there is an art to it as well? Like what are some of the, the parameters or guidelines you give? Cause you have to give some type of guidelines. It went from Elvis to do to Beethoven, the, you know, but you probably gave them training and guidelines.
Dr. Jeremy Weisz: What's your process for at least giving guidelines for the upsells?
Richard Blank: It's composure, it's timing. I mean, I can't start mentioning dog movies before this individual started talking. All Elvis present. If her dog never bark, I would've never known. I could have heard something else in the background. Could have been anything, but as long as the agent is in the moment.
Richard Blank: Because a lot of the times they'll be stressed because of the past, anxious of the future or thinking about lunch. And if I didn't hear that dog bark for two seconds out of a 15 minute phone call, I would've never sold those additional movies. And so almost like a boxer, you need to be focused 100%. When you were on that call, in between calls on your break and lunch zone out as much as you.
Richard Blank: But you will be getting these sort of clues that are on these calls in regards of and, and in upsale sometimes is not even offering additional stuff. An up sale could also be retention because if I can keep you and get a referral that's an up sale cuz we're getting business out of that, or you'll be calling us back again to order a second time, I can consider that a client upsell in regards to fidelity and loyalty.
Richard Blank: So as long as they use their common sense, Jeremy, if they have the sort of manners that we were raised with, with our parents and grandparents, our amazing grandparents, then what we can do is we can relate with individuals in a natural way, and we have a huge menu. And all we have to do, and we don't have the time to go over every movie, but as long as you're not hanging up and you're excited and we just keep talking, we can make suggestions and some of the best, as you wanna say, sales people are the ones that will let you know that it's not the right fit.
Richard Blank: You play basketball. Not every shoe is perfect for you on the court. And so the greatest salesmen for sneakers will look at your size and the way that you play and make those sort of suggestions. And almost the takeaway is what adds to your credibility? Because you're not just throwing everything at the wall to see what fits.
Richard Blank: When someone is not just a yes man, but can be almost a devil's advocate and explain why today or at this moment, this is not a perfect fit for you. That individual not only will come back in spades, but tell all their friends, Hey, I finally got someone that calls the balls in the strikes and will tell me if my tie is not straight.
Richard Blank: So I've earned so much of my business by being forthright with my clients and as much as I'd like to earn their business, a lot of times by default, I'm not able to take the account because of one reason or another. But then again, when I am capable, we've established such trust before even working together that if any sort of complication or challenge comes.
Richard Blank: It's nothing. We've already established that sort of working relationship where we can get through it together. And so upselling is not a forced fit, my friend. I'm not forcing a hand or telling you I only got two left and you got a minute to buy it. Uh, that's a one and a done. You'll have them one time.
Richard Blank: But if we're talking about long term clients, these are the individuals that you need to walk with, not hit the ball and drag. Richard,
Dr. Jeremy Weisz: I wanna be the first one to thank you. Everyone should check out Costa Rica's call center.com to learn more and more episodes of the podcast. And Richard, thank you so much.
Richard Blank: Had the best time today. Thank you so much, Jeremy. What I've got you between my eyes. Walk the.

This is a fun and interesting play activity for kids. This is a simple science experiment for kids where in you can make a bouncing basket ball from the balloon. This looks very similar to the real basket ball.
