Der Junge Kalle Blomquist, wegen seiner kriminologischen Fähigkeiten 'Meisterdetektiv' genannt, und seine Freunde Anders und Eva-Lotta haben sich zur zur "Weißen Rose" zusammengeschlossen. Während des ganzen Sommers ringen sie mit den drei Jungs der rivalisierenden Gruppe der "Roten Rose" um die Vorherrschaft und den Besitz des 'Großmummrichs', eines geheimnisvollen Steins. Im Zuge dieser Scharmützel beobachtet Eva-Lotta eines Tages, wie ein älterer Mann, der als notorischer Kredithai gefürchtet ist, und ein Unbekannter kurz hintereinander in einer Scheune verschwinden. Als das Mädchen dort wegen eines Wolkenbruchs Zuflucht sucht, läuft der Unbekannte gehetzt weg. Kurz darauf findet sie die Leiche des Kredithais. Entsetzt flüchtet Eva-Lotta zu ihren Eltern. Als ihr Name bei der Berichterstattung in der Zeitung genannt wird, gerät die unfreiwillige Zeugin in Gefahr. Der aus Stockholm angereiste Kommissar kommt trotz der detaillierten Aussagen Eva-Lottas dem Täter nicht auf die Spur, so dass Kalle die Ermittlungen aufnimmt. Ein feiger Mordanschlag mit vergifteter Schokolade, dem das Mädchen nur durch Zufall entgeht, bringt dem jungen Detektiv den entscheidenden Hinweis.
