European Commission president Jose Manuel Barroso said on Thursday that he will unveil a banking union proposal on September 12th. The proposal will coincide with his âState of the Unionâ speech at the European Parliament, and will outline a plan that could see the European Central Bank increasing its powers of supervision and intervention.
The banking union is expected to focus on euro-zone members, as non-eurozone countries are likely to opt-out.
EU leaders agreed at the last EU summit in June that more banking integration is the solution to stop governments bailing out debt-ridden banks.
Meanwhile, EU Affairs ministers agreed on Thursday to hold an extraordinary summit in November to discuss the EU's next seven-year budget.
Under the Cypriot EU presidency, European ministers met in Nicosia to put their âwish listsâ for the next long-term budget on the table.
Earlier in June, the European Commission proposed to raise this budget to over 1 trillion euros. This is almost a 5% increase from the ...Distributed by OneLoad.com
Romania's Constitutional Court on Tuesday decided to let president Basescu return to power and the European Commission is urging Romanian authorities to comply with the Court's ruling.
Earlier in July, Primer Minister Victor Ponta's leftist government called a referendum to impeach center-right Basescu. The referendum came only months before parliamentary elections.
But Romania's Constitutional Court declared the referendum void as turnout failed to reach the 50% threshold required.
The decision puts an end on Ponta's attempts to oust long-term rival Basescu. Basescu was suspended in July after he was accused of blocking government policy and exceeding his authority.
The bitter political battle between the two leaders has raised concerns over Romania's state of democracy and the rule of law. The European Union has already warned they will continue to monitor the situation closely.Distributed by OneLoad.com

Leaders of the main opposition parties in Scotland have signed a pledge committing them to campaign 'for' the redefinition of marriage at an event held in Holyrood -- But Ruth Davidson has already faced criticism from some of her own Conservative members -- Dr John Sentamu, The Archbishop of York, has said that marriage must remain a union between one man and one woman and it's not the role of state to change it -- Dr Philip Boyce, a Roman Catholic Bishop in Ireland, is being investigated by the police under the country's 'incitement to hatred' laws for delivering a homily that upset a humanist -- Two of the UK's most prominent atheists have clashed over plans to build a £1 million 'temple' for atheists in London -- Former Governor of Alaska Sarah Palin, has called on an American airline to reverse its decision to remove prayer cards from its in-flight meals -- And a paralysed man has spoken for the first time in nearly 20 years -- and told his mum "I love you".
The European Commission is gearing up to launch an ambitious plan that seeks to make the European Union more democratic.
From the 1st of April, any citizen of a member state of the EU can introduce an initiative to get his or her idea turned into EU law. To make that happen, they need one million signatures from at least seven countries.
Â
This European Citizens' Initiative enables citizens to participate more actively in Europe's democratic life.
â¨Brussels hopes the ECI will boost transparency and increases the quality of European democracy.
â¨â¨Critics question whether the instrument will be hijacked by organised civil society, swallowing up ordinary citizensâ campaigns. Some experts speaking at this conference in Brussels compare the initiative to "climbing Mount Everest". An ECI could take years to start influencing the policy-making process.
The initiative is one of the democratic tools pushed forward by the Lisbon Treaty. It will enter into force on the 1st of April of this year, exactly two ...

STRASBOURG - Martin Schulz has only been in power for less than 24 hours and the new president of the European parliament is already facing a major challenge.
Hungary's Prime Minister Viktor Orban invited himself to the plenary session in Strasbourg to defend what the Commission sees as an anti-democratic Constitution.
Schulzâ priorities for his term and the Danish Presidency were supposed to be the main topics on the parliamentâs agenda. Instead, the social democrat found himself chairing a heated debate on the state of democracy in Hungary.
Hungary's Prime Minister attempted to deflect the criticism with legal and technical arguments, but failed to convince MEPs that he was respecting fundamental democratic values.
Orban's political party, Fidesz, came to power in 2010. The country has been surrounded by controversy since then, especially during the first half of last year, when it held the rotating presidency of the European Union.
The Danish presidency of the European Union comes at one of the most difficult moments in the unionâs history.
Itâs biggest challenge: Keeping the EU construct together.
The financial crisis has driven a wedge between euro and non-euro countries, with David Cameronâs UK seeking isolation from the rest of Europe at a time that the global economy is becoming increasingly interdependent.
Denmark joined the EU in 1973, at the same time as the UK, and itâs the 7th time that it now holds the EU presidency.
Like the UK, Denmark is not a member of the Eurozone. Its government is ready to take a back seat in the French-German-led efforts to solve the euro crisis.
Yetâ¦.itâs also has positioned itself as a bridge builder, eager to keep the EU from breaking up further.
The EU is braced for more contentious talks on changes to the EU treaty that would delegate more powers to Brussels to supervise member state budgets. Denmark will have no direct role in drafting that new treaty.
The presidency is a ...
Fiscal union is unworkable without the creation of a European super-state, says Louise Cooper, markets analyst at BGC Brokers. She also weighs up whether a change of Prime Minister is enough to turn Italy around.
President of the Palestinian National Authority, Mahmoud Abbas, on Wednesday travelled to Brussels in an attempt to get European support on Palestine's UN membership bid. "We raised the Palestinian flag at Unesco. Now we hope EU will come when we raise the flag at the United Nations, with their support", Abbas said.
For his part, President of the European Council, Herman Van Rompuy, highlighted the Union's commitment to a two-state solution.
1st of July of 2013. This is the date in when Croatia will become the 28th member of the European Union. Exactly 8 years after its initial bid, accession talks between the ex-yugoslav country and the Union were finalized on Wednesday. Now, the 300 page long treaty is set to be signed by all European heads of state during the upcoming summit in Brussels.
Unlike Romania and Bulgaria's accession in 2007, Croatia's treaty does not include a "safeguard clause" that would slow down the process if final requirements were not met by the croatian state. But recent scandals of corruption will see the Union closely monitoring Croatia's battle against corruption. In 2009, the former prime minister Ivo Sanader was accused of fraud as he allegedly sent money from state-own companies to a fund for personal use.
Croatian authorities have independently decided to hold a referendum on the EU membership. Recent polls showed that 61% of Croats would vote in favour.
The prospect of EU membership comes straight after ...
Kosovo is stepping up its lobby to start talks about membership of the European Union after it reach breakthrough in its customs dispute with Serbia.
Its president came to Brussels for the first time last week for high-level talks with officials at all key European institutions.
Greece, Spain and Serbia are some of the countries that dont recognize Kosovo as an independent state. Kosovo is still seeing interethnic violence, even as recent as a month ago, with clashes at the Kosovo-Serbian border.
Â
Itâs clear that much needs to be done before itâs possible to speak about a normalized situation. But Kosovoâs President feels itâs destined to join the union.
Â
The European parliament remains concerned about continued evidence of corruption in Pristina and its surroundings.
Â
Council President Herman van Rompuy said he was pleased to see âa European solution,â to a trade dispute with Serbia, reaching an agreement over customs stamps.Â
Van Rompuy urged the president of Kosovo to make further progress to ...

Thousands of Ohioans marched through the streets of the capitol in the Peopleâs Parade to deliver the signatures, which were over five times the number needed to get the bill on the ballot for a public referendum.
The true state of the global economy is masked by the government interventions that prevented a depression. This is clearest in Europe. But Bryan Rich says Europeâs sovereign debt crisis threatens to bring the euro and the monetary union down.
"Ladies and Gentlemen, We have reached Impasse. Either we rise like the courageous Egyptians..followed by the long quiesent people defying State Bullies. We should be filling the streets with too patient British people finally aroused like the Egyptians forcing the parliament and the Governement to quit the German controlled European Union now, there is not a second to lose."
". Now the time is ripe calling for mass action...peaceful mass action to obtain the necessary changes to restore our country. No weapons are needed..just the quiet insistence of us all" Harry Beckhough

The National Council of American-Soviet Friendship (NCASF) was the successor organisation to the National Council on Soviet Relations (NCSR). The 1930s witnessed the birth of the politically radical American-Soviet friendship movement which revolved around the Friends of the Soviet Union, founded in 1929. One of the major goals of the movement was for the United States and the Soviet Union to form an anti-fascist alliance. This eventually led to the foundation of the NCSR, which became the NCASF in 1941. The Council's membership was largely made up of professionals sympathetic to socialism and communism. In 1946 the House Un-American Activities Committee initiated a formal inquiry into the NCASF. In 1947, charges were brought against the Council for failing to register with the Subversive Activities Control Board. During its years of operation the NCASF released numerous publications focusing upon daily life in the Soviet Union and information regarding the state of American-Soviet relations. It ceased operations in 1991.
