Lucy talks us through the project's progress as the planning trip reaches it's halfway mark. Lucy is pleased that Brian has come round to her thinking and that she has his seal of approval as a social work expert. Brian and Lucy have finalised the model for the project and she talks us through the 3 main areas the project will be focusing on, the babies home, prevention of abandonment and fostering babies.
Day 8 of the planning trip and Lucy and Brian visit their partner Hope For Children's project in Namowongo slums. Almost 2,000 people living on a rubbish dump with no water or sanitation. Hope For Children sponsor 108 children and provide much needed education, medical care and a healthy meal a day.
It is Day 7 and after a week of meetings and research Lucy answers a very important question from a supporter about whether our project is taking into account the complexities of the community and culture. Lucy explains this fact finding trip is all about listening to people and only once the team have spoken to social workers, existing charities, probation officers. nurses, doctors and most importantly mothers themselves we will, as a community, make a decision on the final project.
Today is day 6 and Lucy and Brian head off into the Ugandan countryside to visit a project that helps young pregnant girls, Waakisa Ministries. They have a tour round the project with the project administrator Damalia and Lucy is shocked to hear that the youngest girl there is 13. There are many reasons for these young pregnancies, rape, incest and shockingly HIV. Waakisa helps young pregnant girls to be rehabilitated back to their families once they have given birth. This project has been really successful in Uganda and Lucy is amazed at what they have managed to achieve which gives her hope for the future.
Lucy heads out with a volunteer from Homestart Uganda an organisation that provides emotional and practical support to vulnerable mothers. She visits a young mother Ruth who without the support of Homestart may well have abandoned her baby as she had no one to turn to. Ruth is one of the many mothers that Esther the Homestart volunteer supports in the local communities. Lucy comments on how the support has made such a difference in keeping a mother and baby together as they should be. Childs I will hopefully be working in partnership with Homestart so as well as helping abandoned babies they will also be able to prevent babies being abandoned in the first place.
Lucy and Brian meet up with a group of Ugandan mothers to talk to them about the challenges they face in a bid to understand why some mothers might be forced to abandon their babies. After working for years at Sanyu babies home Lucy has never before spoken to a mother about the reasons why they might consider abandonment. The mothers they meet are incredibly strong women but in great need of support. Lucy concludes that the way forward is to work in partnership with an existing charity to help provide support to the mothers as well as look after abandoned babies.
Lucy and Brian smarten up to go and meet with the British High Commissioner of Uganda. It's a very positive meeting, with the Commissioner being very impressed with their approach to starting up a charity in Uganda. He also gives them some useful contacts, so both Brian and Lucy feel they are on the right track. Still a long way to go but on the right track!
It's Day 2 and Lucy and Brian meet with Isabel Booth the director of Families for Children. They talk about fostering in Uganda and working in partnership with Families for Children. Both Brian and Lucy feel the meeting has been positive, it's great to be in Uganda talking to the people that matter and learning more.
Arrival into Sanyu Babies Home in Kampala, Uganda, Day 1 of the planning trip. Lucy is reunited with the staff and feels like she is back in her true home. She also discovers that the babies home is full and she has never seen so many sick babies in the home. Sanyu are doing the best they can. It's only Day one but it feels like Day 2!
Expedition Leader Paul Rose, environmentalist Philippe Cousteau Jr, maritime archaeologist Dr Lucy Blue and marine biologist and oceanographer Tooni Mahto investigate how the Mediterranean gave rise to one of Europe's first superpowers by diving the remains of a Roman shipwreck. Under the cover of night, they brave the treacherous waters of the Straits of Messina to search for one of the largest predatory sharks in the world - the increasingly threatened, prehistoric six gill shark. They dive a perilous network of submerged caves to look for evidence of enormous changes to the Mediterranean Sea and they try to discover whether the feared great white shark could be breeding here.
