Before the end of 1961 the New York publishing company Harcourt, Brace and Co. had the first edition of Lewis Mumford's highly successful book The City In History ready for publication. Two years later, in 1963, the National Film Board of Canada funded the production of six documentaries, each lasting 27 minutes, for a series entitled Mumford On The City. The closing titles confirm that the material for the films, based on The City In History, was prepared by Mumford himself. The director Ian MacNeill wrote the film script and produced the various parts: The City: Heaven and Hell, The City: Cars Or People, The City And Its Region, The Heart of the city, The City As Man's Home and The city and the future. In 1963 Mumford was 68 years old and agreed (decided) to appear as the presenter of the six films, expressing his personal view about the future of the western city, interspersed with pictures of places, cities, archaeological documents, works of art and architecture.
The Battle of San Pietro (1945) is such a shocking, frank, and powerful war documentary that the US Army refused to show it! Master director John Hustonâs actual footage of one of the most grueling and horrendous battles in all of World War II is nothing short of harrowing. The actual Battle of San Pietro, fought on Italian soil, was of the highest strategic importance for the Allied Forces. Thus the Americans threw hundreds of soldiers against an entrenched, fortified, and well equipped German force. The chaotic, devastating combat that took place, as well as the heroic struggle of the fighting men, will never be forgotten. John Hustonâs The Battle of San Pietro is unquestionably one of the most important and moving documentaries ever made.

Our planet Earth is teeming with life. To some, it's a miracle - but can science explain how it came into existence? Critics have attacked the theory of evolution for 150 years. They claim it is full of holes, and the gaps reveal the hand of an Intelligent Designer. Naked Science investigates this explosive science and asks, was Darwin wrong?

Nebulas are mysterious clouds of gas that aren't classified as stars, planets, moons or asteroids. Astronomers use the most sophisticated techniques to view them since they are practically invisible to the naked eye. Nothing less than stunning, nebulas glow, reflect or obscure the galaxy's light with amazing swirls of color. Nebulas mark the regions where the nothingness of space first coalesces, where stars are born and where stars die. Cutting-edge computer graphics are used to bring the universe down to earth.

How did the Earth evolve to support life? Our planet now supports a huge diversity of living creatures requiring very special conditions, but what was the series of events that brought this unique set of conditions together? What did it take to make a world that would support human life? Naked Science takes an imaginary 'human' time traveler on a journey back to the moment of formation of our solar system.

The Universe as we know it is condemned to death. Space, matter and even time will one day cease to exist and there's nothing we can do about it. Harsh realities are revealed about the future of our Universe; it may collapse and burn or it might be gripped by a galactic ice age. Either of these scenarios might be a long way off. However, our Universe could suddenly be destroyed by a "random quantum fluctuation", a bubble of destruction that can obliterate the entire cosmos in the blink of an eye. No matter how it ends, life in our Universe is doomed.

The search for comedy's Holy Grail continues in Dave and Tom's instead opting for a more deliberate and cerebral approach. Delightfully nostalgic yet unmistakably original, you''ll be glued to your screen as Dave and Tom take a look back on "this business of funny." From prehistoric pornography to poetic clowns on mountainsides, after watching Dave and Tom you''ll agree that history has never been this much fun. A spoof of BBC and Discovery Channel documentaries that promise to reveal a great mystery, this DVD is as one reviewer put it, "a silly journey through a world of scenarios... ranging from unfathomable science discoveries to absurd game shows, from sickly polite bank robberies to egomaniacal hat entertainers....their work achieves comedy on a level commensurate with Monty Python, Mr. Show and Little Britain, and highlights a sparkling sense of the off-color, rude and the importance of wacky nonsense. Always unexpected and always entertaining....."

http://www.microcinemadvd.com Robert Whitman created some of the earliest and most important performance works of the 1960s. In his performances, the poetic and often surprising interaction of film, lights, sound, live performers, props, and objects that take on a life of their own create a dense visual, non-narrative dramatic structure.
This DVD captures for the viewer important and seminal examples of this ephemeral art form. It makes available for the first time original recordings of three of Whitman’s 1960s performances and documents the creative thinking of an innovative artist – and the artistic climate of the time.
Included is original footage of The American Moon (1960) and Flower (1963), both filmed by Whitman as notes to himself, and short documentaries about the works – featuring interviews with Trisha Brown, Jim Dine, Simone Forti, Claes Oldenburg, Lucas Samaras, and the artist. A recent performance of Prune Flat (1965) is accompanied by an interview with Whitman on the piece. A ...

This is one of the most compelling documentaries about 9/11 you will ever see. It really explores the inconsistencies and straight out lies like Bush saying he saw the first plane hit the towers on television before he went into the classroom. This had to be either a lie because there was no television coverage of the first plane hitting the towers on TV until the next day. Or what would be much more sinister is if there were actually some coverage that was already prepared to cover the first plane hitting the towers, in which case it speaks to the fact that if this is what he saw then someone had to have some prior knowledge of where to film if he actually saw a plane hit the first tower before he went into the classroom
Children of the Stars is the remarkable true story of the Chinese Feng Jia Wei family.
They come to Beijing in a state of suicidal crisis as they cannot cope with their violent autistic son. He is also unable to speak or connect with them on any emotional level. His mother and father have brought him to the city to attend a special course at the Stars & Rain Institute of Autism. Their hope is to find a “miracle” cure. The film follows them as they grow to understand their son has a life-long condition whilst undergoing a deeply touching journey that reveals the incredible power and tenderness of parental love. It’s one of the most moving and inspirational documentaries you will see.
