Clint Mauk—Ohio/Michigan War Clint Mauk discusses the Ohio—Michigan War. This war which occurred in 1835 is also known as the Toledo War or The War with a Happy Ending. For most of the early 19th century, Ohio and Michigan fought over the “Toledo Strip.” Clint is a Past President and Honorary Member of the Rotary Club of Toledo who has served the Club for almost 59 years. He has chaired the PolioPlus and Program committees, was a member of the first Toledo Rotary Foundation Board, and has been active in both the 75th and 100th Anniversary committees. In 2003, President Walter McGhee asked Clint to tell a couple of his early history of Toledo stories as a warm up for his programs which resulted in some 40 weekly historical stories culminating in the book, Historical Tales of Toledo, produced by the talents and skills of many Toledo Rotarians, and netting approximately $150,000 for the Toledo Rotary Foundation and Clint being named Club Historian. Clint is a graduate of Dartmouth College, a World War II veteran, an avid organic gardener, and fly fisherman. His recent senior years have been devoted to giving 400 lectures on Northwest Ohio history as an “Historical Story Teller” and selling books out of the trunk of his car.
To mark the 100th anniversary of women’s suffrage in Norway 1913-2013, the Arctic Opera and Philharmonic Orchestra presents “DER SCHÖNE TOD – the beautiful death” – an opera installation in the name of film history and the history of feminism.
Opera is extremely dangerous for women!
Especially if they are on stage. The chance that the female protagonist before curtain fall will be stabbed, commit suicide, be poisoned by violets, caught in an avalanche she sets off because she sings too powerfully, or that she dies of one seemingly poetic disease or other – that chance is imminently great. But why does she die? The lives that women lead onstage would never have been accepted off stage in their time. Therefore the opera woman is sacrificed on the altar of entertainment, she is objectified and becomes ”the other” that we as an audience can pity, but not feel threatened by. “Der schöne Tod” gives the audience an opportunity to meet characters like Carmen and Isolde in a series of death scenes from the romantic opera’s absolute climax.
The golden age of opera conincides with the birth of film. This new form of entertainment, which would soon overtake as the pop-medium of the era, adopted melodrama in plots and music, popularity and star cult from the opera stage. “Der schöne Tod” gains inspiration from the silent opera film – a well hidden chapter in film history – where entire operas were filmed and screened accompanied by live soloists and orchestra.
“The death of a beautiful woman is, unquestionably, the most poetic topic in the world” (Edgar Allan Poe)
“Der schöne Tod – the beautiful death” is part of the program for the 2013 Tromsø International Film Festival.

This is from a series of videos produced for composer Judith Lang Zaimont featuring her music. Please watch in HD format! Peter Winograd, violin Peter Wyric, cello Joanne Polk, piano Zaimont's music is continually inspired by contemplation of the natural world. In ZONES, nature's compelling aspects are the mercurial shifts of changing weather patterns. She interprets the word 'zone' to mean both a distinct section or segment, and as a particular climate band; its movements are titled Cold, Warm, and Temperate. "Temperate" is a de-constructed rondo, building stage by stage to a sardonically joyous theme, heard fully only at the end. ZONES -- Piano Trio No. 2 was commissioned by the University of Alabama - Huntsville for the Silver Anniversary of the Huntsville Chamber Music Society, and premiered in 1995 by the Contreras Trio. The fine performance here by violinist Peter Winograd, cellist Peter Wyrick and pianist Joanne Polk is from the work's first recording, on a disc titled "ZONES". The sheet music is published by Subito Music Corp. - http://www.subitomusic.com/ http://www.jzaimont.com
