Building Business Relationships Through Personal Touch
if I send you a meeting minutes from our phone call and I mentioned Judy in it, in writing, first out of a thousand men that have called your company, how many people actually mention your assistant verbally and in writing nobody i'm the only one and that's prior to any sort of contract it shows how i treat you so let's say when i marinate lists have you in the pipeline gotta call you back next thursday judy answers the phone at the break there how are you today is this richard blank judy how are you because i just gotta let you know dr cd told me what you said about me and what you've wrote about me i've been here 15 years no one has ever done that before listen by the way his anniversary is coming up here he loves karate lives in thailand just let him know these sort of things and it's like they just give you the goodies and make nice and a lot of them are undercover bosses how do i know that could be your wife your business associate or let's just say you're confident of 15 years where at the end of the day if you need to choose five contracts in the philippine and india is a couple dollars cheaper than me you might still choose me on merit and the sort of way that i do business because i might be able to offset that cost and just that sort of soft skills and relationship building that we have sorry about my dog that's scrappy doomagoo making her cameo
Depth Over Résumé: Finding True Character in Candidates
But why coming of age? If you and I had to choose the real long player, the one that could make it, when you get traditional answers of somebody, like I asked them a coming of age moment. I want to know if you beat up a bully or saved a kid and And I'll get generic answers about something that sounds good. But when someone talks about mastering the violin, taking care of their grandparents, learning how to cook, they went out camping for six months, learned how to do certain things. I'm like, that's a marathon runner. That's somebody that shows outside interests aside of what they think that I want to hear. And secondly, what happens if they're on the phone with Dr. Seedley and you ask them a zig and a zag question? You've asked me One to three and A to Z. Okay. We've gone through everything on my phone call, right? We're both qualified. And then prior to the contract, just go, Richie, tell me something else about yourself. So if we're hanging out, at least I know about you enough with the business. And so I want to know if somebody can actually... tell me something have depth yeah where are you where are you going with all of this and i also use the psychology behind it because if you tell me you saved a kitten and kicked up bully's ass you know i'm gonna use that a is a nickname for you yeah the kitten saver And talk to you on a rainy Wednesday when you're depressed and the phone calls aren't doing well.
Real Talk: Leadership, Mentorship, and Employee Attrition
And as a leader, I know you're leading these people. I know you mentioned doing the coming of age question in the... hiring process or you say it's better than the resume because you can kind of learn something about somebody and then bring it up. I just imagine how you must be the mentor and the inspiration for so many people. Is there anybody that's actually left you? I think a lot of people stay with you because they like it, but at the same time, there probably are some other maybe entrepreneurs that broke away just to to to do their own thing. But but did they come back and thank you or tell you their stories? And how does that make you feel? If so, as I said, we have a large attrition. I can't I'll never give them the walk of shame. Yeah, there's never a forced attrition. I'm not going to fire you unless you're smoking weed at lunch. You're not making your phone calls. But 20% will shake my hand. They start strong. And a lot of them just, you know, whispers and shadows and peace out after the last paycheck
The Power of Authenticity and First Impressions
No one's going to give you the body and the conclusion if you don't land the intro. They're so set on explaining their product that they don't stop and take a step back for a second and realize this incredible man moved to Thailand, speaks multiple languages, professional martial arts, and just an all-around great guy and a farmer. I mean, who does these things? And that could be the one thing that gets, damn it, that's the thing that got me on your podcast. Think about it. You got all these people that are trying to get on there and to meet you and to share time with you. And I made the cut because I was raw and I was real. And then we get into the meat and potatoes on your show. But who's got the time prior to that? I had one deep breath to make my point. And it hit home. And so that to me is something that it's almost like telling the truth, Doc, where you can just tell the same story over and over again, even 10 years from now, you don't have to remember facts or lies.

And so that to me is something that it's almost like telling the truth, Doc, where you can just tell the same story over and over again, even 10 years from now, you don't have to remember facts or lies.

if I send you a meeting minutes from our phone call and I mentioned Judy in it, in writing, first out of a thousand men that have called your company, how many people actually mention your assistant verbally and in writing nobody i'm the only one and that's prior to any sort of contract it shows how i treat you so let's say when i marinate lists have you in the pipeline gotta call you back next thursday judy answers the phone at the break there how are you today is this richard blank judy how are you because i just gotta let you know dr cd told me what you said about me and what you've wrote about me i've been here 15 years no one has ever done that before listen by the way his anniversary is coming up here he loves karate lives in thailand just let him know these sort of things and it's like they just give you the goodies and make nice and a lot of them are undercover bosses how do i know that could be your wife your business associate or let's just say you're confident of 15 years where at the end of the day if you need to choose five contracts in the philippine and india is a couple dollars cheaper than me you might still choose me on merit and the sort of way that i do business because i might be able to offset that cost and just that sort of soft skills and relationship building that we have sorry about my dog that's scrappy doomagoo making her cameo

Richard Blank – Ep 270: Courage to Build Culture, Not Just a Company
At just 27, Richard Blank took a leap that would shape the rest of his life — relocating to Costa Rica to train over 5,000 employees at one of San Jose’s largest call centers. That bold move sparked a journey filled with unexpected turns, cultural challenges, and remarkable growth.
Today, Richard is the CEO of Costa Rica’s Call Center (CCC), a company he founded in 2008. With a background in communication and Spanish from the University of Arizona — and a language proficiency certificate from the University of Sevilla — Richard combines motivational leadership with tactical communication strategies to empower his team. Over the years, he’s personally trained more than 10,000 bilingual telemarketers.
Beyond the headset and call metrics, Richard brings a unique twist to company culture: gamification. CCC boasts the largest private collection of restored American pinball machines and Rock-Ola jukeboxes in Central America — a reflection of his belief that fun, connection, and shared experiences are key to building strong teams.
A passionate mentor and educator, Richard is also a keynote speaker and scholarship donor at his alma mater, Abington Senior High School, where he supports students pursuing world languages at the university level.
This episode is packed with insight on leadership, resilience, and how culture can transform performance.
Cultural Shocks and Lessons From Doing Business Abroad
Well, let's go with the shock and then we'll go with the lessons. And I must've been exceptionally ignorant thinking this is that if I show up with a smile and a handshake, that they're going to treat me a certain way. Yeah, they'll treat me a certain way, but they'll also charge me 20% more. And that's being nice. You know, it's usually 50%. And so I realized real fast, there's a local cost and a gringo cost. And so what I needed to do is to have a face man for me. the face man of the A-team to go out and negotiate for me on the sly so I can save that money and get things done. So that was a shock. But I also realized about, wait, there's absolutely no way that I have the time to be certified in Cisco, to be an attorney here in this country, to know all of the labor laws. Are you out of your mind? No, seriously. And so I needed to hire specialists now.
How Practicing Rhetoric Changed My Life
But this was one of the few shows where I would rewind, rewind, rewind and practice, practice, practice, because I would get tingles. I go, man, this guy is money. It's like butter. I go, what is he doing? And instead of studying mathematics and architecture and engineering, I was watching Face Man, Remington and Sherlock. And I was picking up vocabulary, rhetoric, and certain rebuttal skills, and I would borrow them. And I would use that on dates and in class and in business. And for some odd reason, people would look at me like I'm clever. It's just the face, man. And so that's my advice to your audience.
Overcoming Setbacks and Finding New Success
but there's nothing wrong with respecting and appreciating those that assisted you along the way and believed in you when you're the most delicate, when you were young. Because I tell you what, you don't know the whole story. When I was in seventh grade, I got kicked out of a private school. I was supposed to graduate Germantown Academy. It's an extremely beautiful elite private school in Fort Washington. I think Bradley Cooper went there. Anyway, I was there till seventh grade. My dad and brother graduated there, but I was having a tough year, man. I was losing focus and the teachers kind of gave up on me. And from being kicked out of a school to then being in a hall of fame at another, That, to me, between me and your audience, that put something to bed that was sitting there for a long, long, long time. I wanted to put that to bed.
Unique Approach to Identifying Leaders in Hiring
And I go through the three stages, coach. The first stage is the interview process. forget showing up on time and filling out your resume or whatever. I'm going to ask you to turn your piece of paper over and give me a couple of paragraphs of a coming of age moment. I want to know if you beat up a bully or saved a kitten. Why? Because it's zig and zag, loosey goosey coach is going to ask you a question. And I want to know if you can get off the script and answer it. So that's the number one thing. And I want to see what you answer me. If it's something that's If you're a marathon runner, did you learn the violin? Or are you a professional chef? That shows commitment and dedication in other areas outside the call center. And so I look at that. So it's a lot of self-respect there.

Are You Driving Your Business...
... or is your business driving you?
Are You Feeling Stuck? Frustrated? Overwhelmed? Let me ask you a question: Do you have a business or do you have a job?
You may own a business, have a business name, a business bank account, and even have business cards. That doesn't necessarily mean you have a business. If you're working the same number of hours as your employees, if you're still trading hours for dollars, then you have a job. If you can't plan a vacation without worrying that the business will falter in your absence, then you have a job.
I can help you fix that!
A business should work FOR you, generating revenue and profits FOR you whether you are there or not. Let me show you how to build the foundations for your success.
You need three things to succeed in business: Strategies, Systems, and Controls.
Strategies
Where do you want to go? What do you want your business to be? What's your next best move?
Your business plan and strategic plan help drive your Vision to achieve your next level of success.
Systems
Every business runs on a system, a set of business processes and procedures. Systems make your business actionable, measurable, repeatable, and sustainable.
Controls
Maintain control of your business. Establish the KPIs and reports necessary for you to check on the health of your business from anywhere in the world.
Location independence.
Now that's success.
Let's work together!

Steve Kay Variety Show Interview with Richard Blank-CEO Costa Ricas Call Center 4-2-25
Conversation, dialogue, entertainment, news, interviews, comedy and music talk, etc.
Steve Kay Variety Show:
Hello earthlings, or anyone from the universe.
In this podcast, you will find a variety of subjects.
We bring the entertainment, right to you in your car.
I look forward to connecting with you and hearing what you have to say. Blessings to all of you and others whom you care about.
Originally from Philadelphia, Richard Blank studied Spanish at a young age. While in college, he lived abroad in Spain and immersed himself in the language.
Upon his return to the USA, he interned for Telemundo, and eventually made the bold step of relocating to Costa Rica at age 25 to help out a friend, working in a call center.
There, he met his wife, and built his own call center from the ground up. He now oversees a company with bi-lingual telemarketers doing inbound and outbound calls, in addition to being a CEO, he is a mentor and a trainer to the many people who are a part of his team.
Steve Kay Top Comedian
I offer stand up comedy, I work alone, I can do anything from about 10 minutes to a half hour of comedy.
I got started doing comedy in 2006 when I took a comedy class at a local club back in New York. Since then I took another class in 2014, took improv classes, produced comedy shows, and attended open mics on and off.
I am also an audio podcaster, you can find my podcast on all 5 platforms: "Steve Kay's Variety Show"
I also have a u tube channel titled: "Comedy from my living room and car"
I am very flexible in adapting my act to the needs of my audience, some audiences may want
Hiring Philosophy: Rebels, Maturity, and Coming of Age
I also noticed that you invest in your employees too, that coming of age moment you mentioned in one of your interviews. Of course. Listen, you have a lot of people coming in for jobs. They will sing you the world. And when they fill out their information, oh, the adjectives in regards to loyalty, fidelity, commitment, hardworking, da-da-da-da-da-da. When can I be a manager? When can you be a manager? I'm from the 80s and 70s. You've got to earn your stripes. You got to, you got to step up to the plate. And so for me, I don't like fast talkers. I like people that are bold and brave and have some moxie, but man, if you're not showing up on time and if you're not coachable and you seem like a cancer or a jumper or disruptor, you're really not the right guy. I'll take a Dennis Rodman. He was the rebound King and he was a great guy on and off the court. You just got to learn how to control the stallion a little bit. See, so it can run a little bit faster. And so I like people that have rebel in them because you and I were rebels. We broke a window or two back in the day, but we also learned how to fix them and clean them. So that's about maturity and growing up. But I prefer to have individuals that have never worked at a call center before, but if they're coming into a call center at 18 or 20 years old, bilingual, to me, it bears the mark of higher education, structured discipline, and cognitive skills. No bad habits. I can mold them like a squire to a knight. But here's the secret. You brought it up. Turn your paper over, Steve. Give me a couple of paragraphs of that coming of age moment. Yeah, I can clarify it for you. I'd like to know when you beat up a bully or when you saved a kitten or you did both in one day. Why? Because Steve is going to ask you a zig and zag question.
Leadership Means Earning Your Team’s Respect
I'm a coach, but I'm also a player. I'm very hands-on. I think the best leaders and the best generals are the ones that earn the respect of their people because my leverage is only my people. If they all leave, I go out of business. So I have to do something right to keep that cage open to have the beautiful bird come back It's a lot deeper than just money, man, because some people are looking for that sort of experience to get them to the next level. Or maybe you and I, Steve, have the moment to shatter any sort of misconceptions of what a bad boss or a CEO could be.
Mental Preparation and Personalizing the Sales Approach
You kind of constantly got to do like a job on your head. You got to brainwash yourself because it's easy to get down. Well, listen, I researched you before the podcast today. You're like the coolest and funniest guy. Can't you get excited for something? Isn't anticipation one of the greatest drugs? It's a breath of fresh air. So with a little bit of due diligence, nothing crazy, but just a LinkedIn profile of Facebook, I could leave the voicemail, send the custom-made email, or when I get you on the phone, we can talk about two or three things that we can anchor and have in common so it could reduce that stress that you're saying you keep having. with making these calls. My man, who taught you how to make these calls? You need to be a brave warrior when you go out there. It's about the arm of the shield and the sword. And if you are properly disciplined and well-versed, play your odds and play the game. In fact, even by default, if you do not get the business, the people will still thank you for your time.
Taking Chances, Regrets, and the Hero's Journey
It's a mother that won't let you ride a roller coaster. You never get to puke, but you also never get to experience a loop-de-loop. What would you rather do? And so I think a lot of people are afraid of living or taking a chance. I'm not saying anyone's better than another person, but I tell you what. When I go back to Philly and I see a lot of my friends from childhood, they're all exceptionally successful. They always say on the side, Hey, I wish I did this, or I wish I did that. It doesn't have to be Costa Rica learning Spanish, but each one of them wanted to leave that castle and slay that dragon and have that hero's journey. And they just get caught up in the matrix.

While you are here, we would recommend taking an extra day of your trip to visit breathtaking virgin beaches, play golf next to the ocean, try your luck at deep sea fishing, explore tropical jungles, climb volcanos or just relax in natural hot springs. Come and see for yourself why call center outsourcing in Costa Rica is a perfect solution for your growing company and a powerhouse in the BPO industry.
