Nearly One Third of States Use the Ballot to Find Answers on the Future of Travel
According to the American Public Transportation Association, public transportation is on a long- term growth trend. In fact, ridership increased by 5.2 percent in the second quarter of 2008 and is accelerating at record breaking rates.
With increased ridership, comes an increased need for better transit systems. But in a recent survey, 85 percent of operators thought their transit systems were outdated or at capacity. Many experts say an integrated plan would allow trains, buses and light rails to become more easily accessible for commuters.
On November 4th, in response to the pressure for increased services, 13 states across the country will ask taxpayers to divert or raise taxes to pay for increased bus and rail services. Historically, voters pass two-thirds of these initiatives but this year experts expect those numbers to be much higher.

Queen Elizabeth 2 (QE2), the most famous ocean liner in the world, made her final call to New York and her last Cunard Royal Rendezvous in America with sister ship Queen Mary 2 during her farewell season in service.
QE2 sailed into New York in tandem with Queen Mary 2 after a signature transatlantic crossing from Southampton, England. That same night, she departed on her 806th and final transatlantic crossing again with Queen Mary 2 amid nautical fanfare and celebration in New York Harbor.
Since the royal naming of QE2 by Her Majesty, Queen Elizabeth II, in 1967, she has logged nearly 6 million nautical miles and carried over 2.5 million passengers. The regal ship will complete her service in November 2008 as Cunard's longest-serving liner.

More and more cancer patients are looking for treatment options that allow them to maintain their quality of life during difficult treatment regimens.
Philips Research is developing a new ultrasound-based drug delivery technology designed to increase the effectiveness and reduce the side effects of chemotherapy treatment for certain types of cancer. The system proposes the use of drug-loaded microbubbles, no larger than red blood cells, that can be injected into the patientâs bloodstream, tracked via ultrasound imaging and then ruptured by a focused ultrasound pulse to release their drug payload when they reach the desired spot. Because the drugs would only be released at the site of the diseased tissue, the patientâs total body exposure to them could be limited.
Researchers say pre-clinical studies have shown the treatment to have the potential to reduce negative side effects in chemotherapy procedures.

General Motors Invests $359 Million in New North American Plant for Small Engine Production
General Motors broke ground on the plant that will build the engine for the Chevrolet Volt and many of its next generation, fuel efficient 4-cylinder engines. In direct response to the current economy, there has been a significant shift to smaller cars. According to J.D. Power and Associates, sales of four-cylinder vehicles grew from 27.1 percent in 2004 to 35.7 percent in 2007.
To meet the current demand for great performance and fuel economy, GM announced a $359 million investment to build a new powertrain plant in Flint for production of smaller engines. They plan to double global production of four-cylinders by 2011.

New Program Promotes Breast Health Awareness
Ellen DeGeneres is calling on women across the country to join the fight against breast cancer. The star has teamed up with One A Day to promote breast health and early detection.
The "One A Day Women's Wake-Up Call" program gives people the opportunity to send friends and loved ones a personalized "Wake-up Call" from Ellen about things they can do to help support breast health. The goal is to reach as many women as possible by the end of October. In addition, to help fund research and increase public awareness, One A Day is making a donation to the Breast Cancer Research Foundation.
According to a 2007 Centers of Disease Control report, while awareness about breast cancer is at an all-time high, the number of women over 40 getting annual mammograms is declining. In fact, every three minutes a woman in the U.S. is diagnosed with breast cancer.
