Famous Off-Road Race Returns to the Desert Racing enthusiasts and rough riders of all ages are getting revved-up for the return of the world famous Mint 400 Off-Road Race. The rugged 400 mile race was started in 1978 as a promotion for the Mint Hotel in Las Vegas. Billed as the "Great American Desert Race," the brutal course quickly skyrocketed to fame as racers braved the rough roads of the Moapa Indian reservation and treacherous trails like the infamous Rock Garden. With the race back on track, more than 250 drivers are expected to participate. And combined, the Palazzo, Venetian and Sands Expo and Convention Center form the largest LEED-certified building in the world. Through their re-engineering efforts the Palazzo and Sands currently recycle 55 percent of their overall waste stream, approximately 10 thousand tons of recycled goods per year. General Motors's New Automotive Technology Has Smaller Engines to Power Larger Cars Increased fuel economy continues to be an important factor in choosing a car. And as fuel standards continue to change, car companies, like General Motors, are looking towards smaller cars and engines to power more, using less energy. But despite the push toward compact cars, America's love affair with big cars continues. Now General Motors has rolled out its new technology, allowing drivers to not compromise size for efficiency. With engine management systems like Direct Injection, automakers are getting a jumpstart on the new rules and designing smaller engines that are able to power larger cars like the Buick LaCrosse. Using high-tech computing power, engineers are able to inject precise amounts of gas into the cylinders to reduce fuel waste and vary valve timing to increase horsepower. So even large luxury sedans, which once needed V-6's or V-8's to move them, are now getting the same power from a 4- Cylinder, while maintaining the 4-Cylinder's fuel economy. Safe Kids USA has partnered with MetLife Foundation to produce an online video series that will help parents and caregivers prevent unintentional injury to children with special needs. The series, along with safety tips and other important information, is now available at www.safekids.org/specialneeds. Comprised of a series of short online videos in English and Spanish, the project will cover five areas that pose great risk of injury and death to all children under the age of 14 in and around the home: fire and burn prevention, water safety, and general home safety, which includes poison, choking and fall prevention. The videos were developed in consultation with an advisory panel of experts and advocates in the field of child developmental disabilities. Through the advisory panel, it was determined that the goal of each video would be not only to teach parents of children with special needs about unintentional injuries, but to supply them with an understanding of what can be done to safety-proof the home or be better prepared in the event of an emergency. To promote the new resource, from March through May, Safe Kids USA will showcase one of the five risk areas each month to highlight the importance of safety in and around the home, especially for families of children with special needs. A recently-discovered Leonardo da Vinci painting (sold in 2007 for $19,000, and now valued at œ100 million) is being exhibited for the first time at a ground-breaking exhibition in Gothenburg, Sweden. The exhibition will feature some 50 original masterpieces by Michelangelo, Raphael, da Vinci and other renaissance artists. Most of the pieces are privately owned and have rarely or never been shown in public. The exhibition ;And There Was Light, opened its doors in Gothenburg, West Sweden, on 20 March. The recently-discovered painting, 'La Bella Principessa', which portrays a young woman in profile, was sold in 2007 to Canadian-born art collector Peter Silverman for $19,000. Silverman had the piece tested and examined by experts after suspecting it was the work of a more prestigious painter. Techniques such as comparing finger prints confirmed Silverman's suspicions, though nothing could have prepared him for the monumental discovery that was made. The painting is now valued at œ100 million. One of the experts to make the discovery was Alessandro Vezzosi, director of the Leonardo da Vinci museum in Tuscany and the artistic director of And There Was Light. Hi-Tech Windshields Will Improve Visibility Fog, rain and darkness can create a number of potential dangers for drivers. Now, a new technology is being developed that will some day help drivers navigate through hazardous road conditions. The Enhanced Vision System, being developed by General Motors, involves night vision, navigation and camera-based sensors that transform windshields into transparent displays that can illuminate the edge of driving lanes. The technologies improve both visibility and object detection, alerting drivers to dangers like roadside animals, children and motorcycles. This technology will also allow motorists to focus on the roadway instead of the instrument panel by projecting key information onto the windshield when needed. Currently used in cockpits around the world, the system is a 21st century take on Head Up Display technology designed by GM in 1988. Study also finds no link between 100 percent juice consumption and weight status in adolescents New research published in the March/April issue of the American Journal of Health Promotion shows that teens drinking 100 percent fruit juice have more nutritious diets overall compared to non-consumers. According to the findings, adolescents ages 12-18 that drank any amount of 100 percent juice had lower intakes of total dietary fat and saturated fat and higher intakes of key nutrients, including Vitamins C and B6, folate, potassium and iron. Those who drank greater than six ounces of 100 percent juice a day also consumed more whole fruit and fewer added fats and sugars. Milk consumption was not affected by juice intake. Monthly Diagnostics Reports Help Improve Vehicle Safety As temperatures drop and winter is in full swing, your car can get the sniffles too. Experts say cold weather can stress and strain a car's engine. But for one auto manufacturer, January was a healthy month. In the first month of 2010, 99.3 percent of the 1.8 million Chevrolet cars and trucks enrolled in Onstar Vehicle Diagnostics were found to have no issues with the key components of their engine and transmission systems. Each month, the service automatically reports the status of key operating systems to drivers, as well as oil life and tire pressure. They are also provided with maintenance reminders based on the vehicle's current odometer reading. Since the program began in 2006, 122 million vehicle reports have been sent to subscribers. Designed to give auto enthusiasts and everyday drivers a glimpse of what's to come, these prototypes are made to showcase cutting-edge technology, daring designs and unique layouts. At the 2010 NAIAS in Detroit, several automakers unveiled buzz-worthy vehicles. Half Jeep, half Cooper, the MINI showed off its wacky Beachcomber concept, designed without doors or a conventional roof. The Blue-Will marked the unveiling of Hyundai's first hybrid and GMC introduced the Granite. Called an Urban Utility Vehicle, the Granite was designed with French style doors, next generation organic LED technology inside and out, flip and fold seats and multiple storage areas.
