The history of computing, starting in Cambridge with Alan Turing.
We take a look at hos life and his work that brought us to the technology we use today
The biographical drama about the Darwin of the Digital Age Codebreaker tells the story of this maverick British genius crucial to founding three new fields of science as well as breaking the Nazis' naval Enigma code during World War II. Historians credit his codebreaking with helping to shorten the war by two years and saving millions of lives. As the founding father of computer science and artificial intelligence, Alan Turing envisioned our digital world long before anyone else. Turing’s visionary brilliance was overshadowed by his conviction for ‘gross indecency’ with another man in 1952. He was forced to undergo chemical castration to ‘change’ his sexual orientation. In despair, Turing committed suicide in 1954. He was 41 years old. Instead of being celebrated, Turing's achievements were largely forgotten. Codebreaker rediscovers the extraordinary life and ideas of the man who many scientists perceive today as the digital Darwin, a scientific great on a par with Einstein and Newton.
This is the guy who jacked up the price on a life-saving drug and is depriving the world of (probably) great music, but also gives free courses in investing and chemistry on his YouTube channel.
CONOCIMIENTOS PELIGROSOS BBC 2 Junio 2008
A biographical account of the life and work of mathematician, codebreaker and computer visionary, Alan Turing. Director: Christopher Sykes Writer: Christopher Sykes
The television film The Strange Life and Death of Dr Turing was made for the BBC Horizon series in December 1991, and first shown on 9 March 1992. The film-maker was Christopher Sykes, who did an excellent job on a rather low budget; it shows many places and people in the Turing story as well as explaining the line of his work, and in fact the interviews were valuable additions to the record.
Bronze Medallists are named after a Bad Plus song & an Idlewild lyric. They should have got gold. Or at least silver. They are none the less happy to have appeared on the rostrum. The four-piece, based in East London formed two years ago, in the wake of both band and relationshipbreak ups, Bronze Medallists could be seen as a rebound band. But it’s not. “We’re free birds” says frontman Olly Price, and this philosophy of creative freedom is the driving force behind the band’s latest single,‘Mathematics’. It’s a completely electronic sound and a departure for the members who’ve cut their teeth in numerous indie guitar and folk bands. The single’s B Side ‘Binary Girl’ is about falling in love, but through and with the screens of iphones and laptops. About how the lines of the physical and virtual are getting tangled, it’s an absurd Kurzwellian projection of our obsessions with technology, and with computers getting closer to passing the Turing test, a vision of the future. Bronze Medallists are being made into Holograms by Musion, the folks behind Gorillaz and the MTV awards. The video for ‘Mathematics’ reflects the band’s desire to explore visuals for a more complete and immersive experience. Debut single 'Mathematics', featuring B-Side 'Binary Girl' is released online on the 6th June, and in record shops on the 4th July...
Kate Russell presenting Alan Turing, the man who taught computers to think. Information Pioneers is a campaign from BCS, The Chartered Institute for IT, that seeks to show how the contributions of five very different people helped to shape the information society that we live in today. This is one out of the five which shares the story of an Information Pioneer who have truly enabled the information society. Created by an award-winning production team, the campaign aims to demonstrate how information empowers people and through this, we hope will encourage you to use IT as a tool to innovate, just like these Pioneers did.
