Where ever there is fishing, there is gear that gets lost or abandoned known as derelict fishing gear sometimes called ghost nets. The Washington Department of Fish & Wildlife estimates that there are 117, 000 items; nets, lines, pots, traps, and other equipment weighing 2.6 million pounds beneath the surface of Puget Sound. Fifty years ago, the net-fishing industry switched to synthetic nets and this material takes decades to decompose; crews have recovered abandoned nets over 30 years old. The abandoned gear continues to do what it's designed to capture and kill fish; salmon, rockfish, crabs, octopuses, shellfish even marine birds and mammals. The abandoned equipment is not only a danger to sea life, it also damages habitat and can be a danger to boats and divers. Derelict gear is difficult and dangerous to remove and must be removed by professional divers with specific protocols. The gear is often tangled together and encrusted with dead and live marine organisms. It can weigh a ton or more when ...

http://www.bkwine.com/wine_tours/wine_tours.htm --- Interview with Sandrine Garbay the chief winemaker and cellar master (maitre de chai). She has been in charge of the wine making since 1998 at Yquem. Sandrine has made a dream come true by becoming the winemaker of Yquem.
The most important thing for Sandrine in making the wine is to respect the source and the raw material, so to speak, to respect the grapes and extract all aromas and elegance that the grapes and the noble rot (botrytis cinerea) can give.
Chateau d'Yquem is located in Sauternes in Bordeaux and is one of the worldâs most expensive sweet white wines, in fact, it's simply one of the world's most exclusive wines all categories. Yquem is the biggest property in Sauternes having some 100 hectares. The size adds complexity and depth to the wine.
Sandrine also talks about how to pair Yquem wine with food â matching it with for example lobster and shellfish or even fish. Also chicken or veal can be delicious with Yquem.
Sandrine finishes ...

Dont Let The Fish Get You
Fishing is the activity of hunting for fish by hooking, trapping, or gathering. By extension, the term fishing is applied to pursuing other aquatic animals such as various types of shellfish, squid, octopus, turtles, frogs, and some edible marine invertebrates. The term fishing is not usually applied to pursuing aquatic mammals such as whales, where the term "whaling" is more appropriate, or to commercial fish farming. Fishing is an ancient and worldwide practice with various techniques and traditions and it has been transformed by modern technological developments. In addition to providing food through harvesting fish, modern fishing is both a recreational and professional sport.Fishing is a very ancient practice that dates back at least to the Mesolithic period which began about 10,000 years ago. Archaeological features such as shell middens discarded fish bones and cave paintings show that sea foods were important for survival and consumed in significant quantities.
