Todd Rundgren was exploring weird instrumental avenues, creating a warped, synth-fueled variation of prog rock. This wasn't the culmination of the weirdness A Wizard, A True Star initiated -- it was merely the beginning. Not long after completing Todd, Rundgren assembled Utopia, a prog rock group with no less than three synth players, plus guitar, bass and drums. Ostensibly, the band was a collective effort, with Rundgren contributing no more than the remaining quintet, but the possessive nature of the title of their debut, Todd Rundgren's Utopia, illustrates who the driving force of the group was. And it is true that TR's Utopia picks up where Todd left off, expanding the already lengthy experimental instrumentals by adding layers of synthesizers that stretch on forever -- which is no exaggeration, since only one track ("Freedom Fighters") is single-length, with the remaining three cuts clocking in between ten and thirty minutes. For anyone who isn't a dedicated fan, slogging through these seemingly endless prog excursions is a little tedious, and even the devoted may find that these roads, while occasionally interesting, don't necessarily lead anywhere.

Florian Fricke pioneered the use of synthesizers in German rock, but by the time of Hosianna Mantra he had abandoned them (eventually selling his famous Moog to Klaus Schulze). While In den Gärten Pharaos had blended synths with piano and African and Turkish percussion, Hosianna Mantra focuses on organic instrumentation. Conny Veit contributes electric guitar, but other than that, Fricke pulls the plug and builds the album around violin, tamboura, piano, oboe, cembalo, and Veit's 12-string, often with Korean soprano Djong Yun's haunting voice hovering above the arrangements. As the album's title suggests, Fricke conceived of Hosianna Mantra as a musical reconciliation of East and West, a harmonization of seemingly opposed terms, combining two devotional music traditions. That notion of cultural hybridity resonates throughout. On "Kyrie" droning tamboura, simple piano patterns, ethereal, gull-like guitars, and yearning oboe ebb and flow before coalescing in a passage of intensity and release. The epic title track adds another dimension to the fusion, emphasizing a Western rock sound with Veit's spectacular playing to the fore, simultaneously smoldering and liquid, occasionally yielding to Djong Yun's celestial vocals. Above all, Fricke envisioned this as sacred music, intimately linked to religious experience; however, as his musical synthesis of disparate religious traditions indicates, he was seeking to foment a spiritual experience beyond the specificity of any particular faith. Indeed, Fricke called this album a "mass for the heart" and that aspect can be heard most succinctly on the melancholy "Abschied" and the gossamer-fragile "Segnung," which blend an austere hymnal sensibility with a more mystical vibe. Julian Cope has said that Hosianna Mantra sounds like it was made in a "cosmic convalescent home" -- an excellent description underscoring the timeless, healing quality of this music, which is far removed from the everyday world and yet at one with it.

Therefore the opera woman is sacrificed on the altar of entertainment, she is objectified and becomes ”the other” that we as an audience can pity, but not feel threatened by. “Der schöne Tod” gives the audience an opportunity to meet characters like Carmen and Isolde in a series of death scenes from the romantic opera’s absolute climax.
The golden age of opera conincides with the birth of film. This new form of entertainment, which would soon overtake as the pop-medium of the era, adopted melodrama in plots and music, popularity and star cult from the opera stage. “Der schöne Tod” gains inspiration from the silent opera film – a well hidden chapter in film history – where entire operas were filmed and screened accompanied by live soloists and orchestra.

Concept video and album artwork for Chilly Gonzales' 'Solo Piano II'. It's said the piano can paint the most colours of any instrument but the beauty of this album stems from its simplicity and purity. Black and white keys tell complex stories, I wanted to express this idea through my visuals. I produced an animation in Cinema4D and After Effects. Using motion capture I created a man that emerges from floating piano keys. Most of Chilly’s tracks begin quite abstract and improvised, his sophisticated melody’s emerge from something seemingly quite random. They refine like the silhouette in my motion graphic. There are dozens of techniques in mma fighting and few can master them all. Most guys come from one of the main disciplines; boxing, wrestling, Brazilian Jiu Jitsu etc and so they have distinct strengths and weaknesses. A wrestler will want to get in close and get to the floor at the first opportunity, a boxer will prefer to stay upright and use a combination of hands and knees to exercise control of the fight. Whoever you are and whatever your background you will need to work on your core strength to maximise this area but you will also and perhaps, more importantly, need to hone your skills in the areas where you are weak. Plot: Steve sees a sign asking for test subjects for an experiment. Not being in a good financial position, Steve enters the laboratory and follows Professor Mortimer into the basement. There he is asked to enter a machine. Steve doesn't realise of course, that said machine will keep him in suspension for thousands of years, leaving him in a world where there is seemingly no sign of humanity left, and strange creatures have evolved and invaded. Steve must survive and try to find any sign of non-zombified humans.
