Pittsburgh, Pa., October 29, 2009 –(Market Wire)- Alcoa and Commercial Aircraft Corporation of China (COMAC) have formed an alliance to develop advanced aluminum alloys and other materials for a high-performance but fuel-efficient and economical passenger jet. A prototype of the C919 single-aisle jet, which will be assembled in Shanghai and seats up to 190, went on display last month. The C919 will be the largest passenger jet to be produced in China and is expected to eventually challenge other global players in the commercial aircraft market. Alcoa and COMAC are examining advanced aluminum structural concepts, designs and alloys to create the C919. . “The C919 will be a showcase for China’s ambition to be more than a low-tech producer of consumer goods for the world,” USA Today reported.

April 2009, Fontana, California: At Shell Oil Companys 2009 Shell Eco-marathon Americas competition at Auto Club Speedway in Fontana, California, innovation and fuel efficiency was the name of the game! This year the Eco-marathon attracted 44 teams (representing 29 universities and 6 high schools) from North and South America, representing Brazil, Canada, Mexico and the United States. A guest team from India also fielded an entry in the competition. Participants designed vehicles in two categories: the Prototype Group, which includes cars with maximum technical creativity and minimal restrictions with regard to current automotive designs; and a new category, UrbanConcept Group", which includes vehicles closer in appearance and technology to current models and nearly road ready. Each year approximately 300 deaths occur as the result of about 30,000 police chases according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). Now, those numbers may soon start to decrease, with the introduction of a new prototype technology that improves safety on the road during one of the most dangerous situations – high speed police pursuits involving stolen vehicles. The technology, known as Stolen Vehicle Slowdown, can allow OnStar advisors working with law enforcement to send a signal to a stolen vehicle to reduce engine power, slowing the vehicle down gradually. Gradually and safely slowing a fleeing vehicle can protect innocent bystanders and police officers. The NHTSA agrees that this technology can save lives, prevent property damage and make our roadways safer. The Stolen Vehicle Slowdown will be made available on more than 1.7 million 2009 vehicles.
