Der Chemiker Dr. Martin Schlueter beginnt seine Laufbahn im Kapitalismus und steht als Wissenschaftler zwischen den Klassen, die auf der einen Seite der Industrielle Vahlberg und sein enger Vertrauter Wolfgang Jonkers, auf der anderen der Kommunist Ernst Demmin und die junge Eva Dorn repräsentieren. Um ungestört wissenschaftlich arbeiten zu können, verrät Schlüter seine Liebe zu Eva und heiratet Vahlbergs Tochter Felicia. Er wird zum Mitläufer der Nazis. Im Krieg findet er Kontakt zur Partisanenbewegung. Später bleibt er erst in Westdeutschland, bevor er in die DDR übersiedelt. Vahlberg leitet wieder den Konzern im Westen, Demmin einen volkseigenen Chemiebetrieb im Osten. Die ersten vier spielfilmlangen Teile liefen an aufeinanderfolgenden Tagen, der letzte erst ein Vierteljahr später. Im Dezember 1965 hatte das ZK Plenum getagt und die Kulturpolitik der SED gravierend geändert - es ging nun nicht mehr um eine Entscheidung für den Sozialismus, sondern im Sozialismus. Der letzte Teil wurde überarbeitet und zeigte danach sehr viel konkreter, wie Dr. Schlüter in der DDR als Chemiker arbeitete, seine kritische Distanz zur neuen Heimat war nicht mehr so deutlich.
