True Cities is a collection of photos that show four metropolises which each in a specific way form the current political and cultural landscape. The installation is a patchwork, bringing together the urban structures of Guangzhou, Dubai, Lagos and London. The exhibition comprises hundreds of different pictures that show the interconnectedness of the world.
Charlie Koolhaas, raised in London, lives and works in her studio in Guangzhou. She has a background as sociologist, and worked as editor for several magazines, curator and writer. In this video she talks about the concept of the exhibition. The show runs until the 26th March 2009.

The streets of Bethlehem are plastered with countless posters depicting suicide bombers and members of the armed resistance: martyrs of the modern era. Charles Annenberg Weingarten and his guides walk the city and discuss how the patchwork of propaganda could be adjusted to reflect a desire for freedom rather than a call to violence. What would spring be without a bit of blossom? The oracles of fashion have defined the trend not to miss: flowers… in all shapes and sizes. Some designers lean towards romanticism “natural beauty” style in chiffon dresses printed with cornflowers and pansies teamed with wooden wedges as seen at Stella McCartney or in liberty patchwork worn with sandals as seen at D&G. The dreamy look is the same at John Galliano, with a chic 1920s inspired style, where flowers appear as prints, embroideries, pleats and even accessories. Missoni meanwhile goes for the oversized flower. Hand-painted flowers create an impressive look at Dolce & Gabbana. At Gucci, the emphasis is more rock, with graphic prints based around black, white and yellow. Kenzo and Yohji Yamamoto use primary colours blue, red and yellow. And latex flowers even make an appearance on pale pink and yellow swimming costumes at Sonia Rykiel.
Bill Roth's Some Assembly Required is a patchwork glimpse into the slightly manic process of self-concoction, as undertaken by a girl who's not really there to start out with. She's hollow, or weirdly invisible, or just out of sync with the rest of the world around her, and she tries to get real by accessorizing herself one artificial piece at a time, like a mosaic. At least that's what this short film looks like to me. You may see something entirely different. The fact that all of the visual and audio ingredients have been assimilated and transformed from somewhere else adds to the message, as does the cheerfully attention-deficit original soundtrack composed by Bill. Sardinian Antonio Marras was inspired by Pierro Manzoni, an Italian artist from the 60s made famous by his work with retrieved rubbish. This resulted in a patchwork fashion, consisting of suits with shortened trousers, tight-fitting jackets and patched-up shirts. A casual allure for a collection dominated by light colours and also consisting of long gilets and Jacquard jumpers.
For Dornbracht Edges, designer Mike Meiré is showing the installation “The Farm Project”. With “The Farm Project” Mike Meiré transforms the kitchen into a barn-like, “real-life” stage, charged with aromas, animals, plants and objects – and with an outer cover made of a patchwork of materials.
