Building Team Culture Through Personal Connection and Trust
In order for me to have grown my business, I needed to delegate and bring in professionals. I'm a guest in this country. I'm a marketer and I'm a salesman and a trainer. So I needed the accountants and the attorneys and human resources and IT. And so by having that leap of faith in people allowed me to grow. But this is the foundation training. And I can answer your question real quickly, Charles, in regards to the incoming shrapnel that you're talking about. When people come into my call center, because there is a lot of options here, Amazons in Costa Rica with teleperformance, concentric sites, you name it. How do I compete? Well, first and foremost, I know somebody's name. And Bill, I know you. Everyone's going to know your name and you'll know everyone's name in your leadership. Secondly, I asked them to give me a coming of age moment. I just don't want the interview. I want to hear when you beat up a bully and saved a kitten. Why? So I can use that on rainy Wednesdays. I really see the depth of the individual that I'm dealing with.
Losing the Connection: COVID's Impact on Workplace Culture
Thank you for bringing that up. And it's actually the topic that ails me the most. I believe in synergy. We're in a very interactive, artistic environment. And you can feed off of that, especially somebody who's having a very good day. And so I was very thankful that during COVID, I was able to adjust and have people work from home. We're very fortunate. But I lost my I became a print, Rox. I'm not a painting anymore. I don't have the chance to play pinball with them downstairs or walk the rows or break bread with them. Come on, you know what I'm talking about. I'm standing behind them when they're ripping phone. That was taken away from me. And am I still able to perform? Sure. They're saving money. They're saving time. They're at home. We make sure through the sort of internet connections that they are capable through labor laws. to work from home and we do the Zooms and everything, but we lost a beautiful thing that we once had. And I think helped build a sort of company culture.
The Honor of Sharing a Meal Abroad and Old-School European Adventures
been a lot of different places but my favorite part of traveling out of anything is when i'm invited into somebody's home for a meal i mean it's incredible when you meet their family and you get to taste the local dish but I see it as more as a huge compliment and an honor to sit at somebody's table. And so I've been very fortunate visiting friends and things like that. But when I was a junior in college, I spent my entire year abroad in Europe, 93 and 94, and I stayed over the winter of 93. I didn't go back to the States. I was in Europe for 10 months. living in Spain. But then over that Christmas break, I was able to travel to about 14 countries. So you're doing the Eurorail, you're staying in the youth hostels, and this is 93. And so you don't have your cell phones on your computers. It was still old school. You're reading books, you're staying up late, drinking coffee, talking to people. You're making plans and meeting up and doing the things how we grew up. And I'm actually still in touch with a lot of the people that I went on those adventures with.

Defining Moments: Inner Battles, Priorities, and Leadership During COVID
Because it's not those battles that we fight on the outside. It's those that we fight within ourselves that defines who we become. Very good. And so also you see your priorities if you're about to lose everything. It's like if your house is burning, what's the one thing you run in and grab? Is it your photographs, your dog? I don't know. But you realize you could lose everything if I could just keep one thing. And I don't know, it grounds you. During COVID, there were a lot of individuals that I had extremely high expectations on and they disappointed me so. And then you had other individuals that really stepped up the plate. showed leadership didn't surprise me I always knew they had it in them but really
Following Intuition and the Magic of Science and Spirit
Sometimes I think about falling in love. I believe in metaphysics. I believe in certain sort of things we can't explain and can't control. And so a lot of this stuff, I believe, is just your intuition, your tingles, your sixth sense that kicks in. And so I like to put a little bit of magic dust on some of these thoughts to see if there's any sort of things out there that are assisting me and getting me there, like stars being aligned, in a sense. I believe totally in that, Richard. It's, you know, it's that intuition, that very strong intuition that I had since I was a child. You know, what I haven't shared, it's like, you know, I was in hospital for almost like two years in a life support machine at the age of eight. But when I was born, my parents were told by the spiritual teacher that they used to go saying he's going to be a master healer, he'll go around the world and do all the work that I'm doing now. But, you know, for me, it was a hoo-ha thing. But one thing I always love to learn, it's understanding science and spirit.

Dr. Laura Sicola
Are you equally confident and influential whether communicating with people in business development, finance, engineering, HR, clients, or the board of directors?
Are you as persuasive and compelling whether speaking on camera, presenting to 500 people at a conference, pitching to investors, or advising your employees in a 1:1?
I am a speaker, coach and leadership communication expert who helps people hone their Vocal Executive Presence (VEP) and communication skills to project a strong, positive leadership image, develop loyal, effective teams, and create their ideal workplace culture to reach their ultimate goals.
Your technical expertise only gets you so far; after that, your success is a direct result of how effectively you can COMMUNICATE that expertise to others who do NOT have your skills and knowledge.
I have worked with everyone from executives and aspiring execs at companies like IBM, Comcast and the US Department of Commerce, to executive directors at non-profits, groups of entrepreneurs and women's/diversity initiatives.
Do you or will you lead a large team or organization? Are you getting ready for a conference presentation? A TED talk? A press conference? Or do you need to facilitate team meetings and mediate staff conflict? You tell me who your audience is, and I show you how to get your message across to them efficiently and effectively, while bringing everyone to a collective "YES."
And if you're looking for a speaker for your next event - live or virtual - and need a topic that will resonate with EVERYONE delivered by an inspiring, engaging speaker, give me a call!

Pushed My Car in a Suit: A Hilarious Client Story
yes yes all right finally tell me about a time when you had to laugh at yourself ah i love this story so i had a client in town right phil and i'm driving him to dinner and it's the rainy season and unfortunately my car ran out of gas right by the um la sabana park and I couldn't believe it. So the guy looks at me, he goes, listen, the gas station is just a block away. And he goes, I'll push it if you will. I go, are you serious? He goes, yeah, why not? And so I took my jacket off. I'm still in my suit. Got the, you know, the best on. It's a good bonding moment there. Pushed it down the street. People are honking, laughing at me. A guy on purpose would curve a little, so it splashed me.
Handling Leadership Challenges During COVID
Yes, of course, Laura. It was during COVID when all of a sudden the government said, you got to send everybody home. And so what do you do? IT needed to prepare the lifeboats. The agents mentally needed to prepare for the isolation. And my supervisors and I needed to create certain mediums to keep that communication going and that lifeline going. And so I saw some people run for the hills. I saw freshmen step up to the plate.
The Gary Technique: Trust and Perseverance
Tell me about a time when you went to bat for someone else. Who did you speak to on their behalf? Why and how? I totally remember this story when we spoke about it, Laura. I had an agent called Gary and we called the Gary technique. This guy was usually the ramper upper where I'd put him on a brand new campaign to lead the charge, show some metrics and things will look good. Once again, the lone voice with the client convincing them that this is the guy. So after a certain day or two, when the client was losing its patience or Gary wasn't, you know, hitting the home runs yet, he said, Hey, I want you to remove him and try somebody else. And I said, you haven't really given him enough time. He goes, no, I just don't have a good vibe. I go, okay. Let's give it until the end of the day. And then I'll put him on another campaign. Next thing you know, Gary ripped three appointments. And so the client calls about it goes, why? I didn't know that. Let's keep, I go, well, listen, Billy, I did speak to the other client. He's being moved, but I just got to let you know in the future, have faith in me, trust my opinion. This is my wheelhouse. I know what I'm doing. And you know, just once the people get loosey goosey and they feel comfy on the phone, then you start hitting them. And so, um, I've fallen on swords for people because I've known what they've done. And I've also made mistakes as well. Sometimes Gary was not the good fit on a certain campaign and it just wasn't the right guy. Guy can't bat a thousand. Sure. Sure. And so I'm willing to take that hit too. But the beauty of it is at the end of the day, regardless of the outcome, the fact that you might have faith in somebody else besides yourself.

Favorite Pinball Games and Arcade Adventures
Ooh, the one that I own or the one that I have played? The one that I own is a 1996 NBA Fast Break from Williams. It's a wonderful machine. I enjoy that the most. But when I was in Arizona, they have this amazing arcade that's in Mesa that's got like over 50 pinball machines. And I was able to play some stuff from the old 70s and the 80s and 90s.
Influential Book and Life Lessons
It's a wonderful question. There's so much out there. For me personally, I've dabbled in your self-helps and motivational books, but I'm more into biographies or certain sort of stories of a coming of age. My favorite book of all time was a gift that was given to me. It's from Harvey Allen. It's called Anthony Adverse. It was written in the 1930s. It's a very big, fat, long book. Anthony Adverse. And they made a movie about it as well from Harvey Allen. And so it was something that I never expected to read. But when I was in Spain, a very good friend of mine gave it to me. So when I was on the trains, I would pull out a few pages here and there. But it was it was really about a wonderful story about a dreamer that lived in since it's very long, a full life. I mean, you really go through the whole book. But it changed me a little bit. It was the discipline of reading a book that was so many pages, but also I resonate towards this main character that was finding himself and needed others where, Casey, success is built on a million thank yous, and I'd be very foolish to think I did this on my own. Show less
growing company and a powerhouse in the BPO industry.
Marriage and Video Game Battle Lines
I got Hook. I got a World Cup machine, Street Fighter 2, Jokers, Lethal Weapon 3, Mousing Around, Judge Dredd, State Shuttle. Listen, when you're married to somebody, you got to choose your battles wisely. My wife can have 99% of battles when the one thing I am going to die on that hill are my video games. And Casey, thank God I got enough room at my office that I can fit them all.
Positive Employee Management
That's just one of so many examples. And also another one I'm going to throw back into the game room. So instead of having a meeting, Casey, where I bring you in and make you feel bad, why don't we take a recess downstairs? Let's get on the Pac-Man machine. Let's play some pinball. Five minutes later, you've let off some steam. You've recharged some batteries. You're saying, thank you, jefe. Thank you. You don't need to thank me. Thank you for allowing me to get you off the floor for a minute away from everybody. So you could calm down and reset yourself. Yeah. That's all. And then let's go back up champ. Let's do what we gotta do.
Strategic Communication and Respect
And the second thing is I'm going to know your name, so I'll give you the dignity. And a lot of the agents will tell me, Richard, you're the first boss that ever knew my name. And I said, unfortunately, that's true. And I might be the last, but at least while you're with me, I will know your name. And also, and also since English is their second language and it's okay that they have a slight accent to me, Casey, it bears the mark of higher education. I really insist on the thesaurus because I want them to properly express themselves. And so there are certain words that can produce a negative trigger, a rabbit hole or an ego defense. And so by using strategic words like guiding, assist and lending a hand versus helping and instead of saying, excuse me, can you repeat that? It's more, Casey, for my clarification. These are some strategic, diplomatic, and very choice structured conversations where we can really prolong conversations, increase conversion ratios. And not only that, increase the fulfillment of the agent's job. Casey, this is a very strict Catholic country. And as much as I want to fulfill the need of the agent, it's really more for the client.
Thriving Through Positive Reinforcement
It's really not about me, my friend. It's really about the others. It's the positive reinforcement that I get. So I could think that I'm the greatest and I'm the one man party and show and I'm the king of the castle. But if nobody shows up for my birthday party at Chuck E. Cheese, I have no friends. And so for me, being in business for 14 years, it's not about how smart I am. how clever I am. It's about the foundation of the people that come back here every day to work with me. And so thriving for me is when people say, good morning, jefe, or they become supervisors, or they've been with me for a year, five, 10 years, or I get a written letter from a client telling me how amazing my organization is. And so I feed off of the responses of others.
Transforming Negative Tone with Buffer Boomerang
I have a buffer boomerang technique where if somebody asks you a question, sometimes their tone could be negative. So what I would like to do is buffer your tone and make it positive. So I'd say, Casey, that's an excellent question. My name is Richard Blank. Reinforce it with the question, repeated what you said to show active listening, and then sent it back to you in a positive way. There's positive, there's buffer boomerangs throughout an entire phone call when someone asks you a question and makes a statement. So then let's say that your assistant's name is Susan. And I answer her question and she likes me and she's willing to transfer the call to you. Prior to that transfer to call Casey at your consulting group, I'm going to let them know that how amazing that they are when I speak with you. So I'm going to be giving a gift and moving with some momentum.
