You know, we have an interesting tension in our country today from a value standpoint, and of course Christian colleges and universities stand for very important values in our culture. And part of the conflict there is when you have legislative mandates that might conflict with the value of a particular institution. And I think it's very important for our college leadership at every level to be prepared to address those types of conflicts appropriately. You can't put your head in the sand and pretend it doesn't exist because we've seen over the last 50 years major changes in the acceptance of certain traditional values that Christian colleges and universities would espouse. So I think it's very important from a legislative standpoint to be aware and be involved politically; be involved in encouraging legislative responses that will support your mission and your values as an organization. And not be so dependent on strictly government resources that if those resources should be less or they should change that you're not going to survive as an institution. So it's very important that the leadership at our colleges and universities be prepared for what could be an uncertain future.

Representatives from the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) came to West Hartford Town Hall the evening of July 14th to address questions about the floodplain map revisions conducted this past September. The revisions have a significant impact for homeowners, as federal law mandates that homes with mortgages in certain flood zones purchase flood insurance – sometimes at a substantial cost. The forum, assembled by Congressman John Larson’s office, brought out residents from West Hartford, Avon and other surrounding communities. The two hour meeting gave an overview of what the new maps will mean for homeowners and offered residents an opportunity to voice their concerns. FEMA says there is not a set period of time for the maps to be re-studied. They are adjusted as budgets allow. West Hartford’s first floodplain study was in 1974, followed by updates in 1987 and last fall. FEMA also told LocalOnlineNews.tv the maps will not be implemented for one year. It is estimated electrical problems cause more than 40 thousand fires a year, kill close to 500 Americans and injure 23-hundred more, according to the US Fire Administration. That’s the bad news. The good news- many of these fires are preventable, especially thanks to new technologies. Arc Fault Circuit Interrupters (AFCIs) have been used for years to help detect what’s known as “parallel” types of arcing, believed to cause many electrical fires. Now, new “combination type AFCIs” take this prevention a step further, by detecting parallel types of arcing as well as series, or load limited, arcing. Beginning in 2008, the 2005 National Electrical code mandates combination type AFCIs in new residential construction. Experts say it makes sense not just to install the new combination type AFCIs in new homes, but in older homes as well, saying this inexpensive device can go along way towards saving both property and lives.
