In this silent film, early roots of sci-fi magic are given to us in the form of a scientist who invents a ray that makes people caught in its beam fall asleep where they stand. With magical and wonderful shots of a Paris long gone, it is the adventure of a group of unaffected people who, with their sudden freedom, play the game of mice while the cat is away. With a narrative that sways toward a moralistic stance on the principles of fair play and responsibility, this little science fiction fable can still be as poignant today as when the magnificent views were first shot from the dizzying heights of the Eiffel Tower.

Official trailer for Mirrorman, the third short film written and directed by Dublin based Irish filmmaker Aidan Duffy. It had it's World Premiere at the Short Film Corner of the 64th Festival de Cannes in May 2011. A boy born with a mirror for a face becomes an artist and finds love in this modern fable. His mother is from Earth, his father from a planet nineteen light years away. His name is Aron, but the world will know him as Mirrorman.

The video for Banjo by Chad Lee (a song off his Sidewalks and Trains album) has an authentic feel, as if it were shot on a friend's farm on a day off from working the fields. Which is not to say the band is unprofessional, the band plays well with great energy and presence. The cast of the farm fable were caricatures of American farm life, bare foot, with overalls in tatters; the cast was a lovable rag-tag bunch of hillbillies. The song and the video tell a timely story that many people in America face of being pushed out of an old way of life in the interest of urban sprawl and overpriced condos. Despite the big bad banks and developers (In traditional suits and sunglasses) the video has a cheerful tone. The power of the Banjo reins supreme as Granny uses it as a weapon, forgoing the shotgun and picking up the banjo. There is a reference to the often spoofed, Dueling Banjos in the first ten seconds is clever, yet the song could have used even more banjos visually. The video, while not without its good points, may need to put some of the production team out to pasture. The cuts between shots lose most visual impact they would have had by being far too quick, and the angles chosen for some of the shots are baffling, as they do not flatter anyone in the band. With a friendly lead singer, and a cast of expressive and strange characters, this home grown, countrified music video ends up being rather entertaining. For all its good intentions, Who Moved My Cheese? basically reduces us to mice in a maze sniffing after cheese. We can create the circumstances and realities we want—we can go beyond simply changing our behavior (find that new cheese!) to changing the game itself. But to do so we need to understand the ways we’re holding ourselves back. As one of the characters in the book says, “the problem is not that the mouse is in the maze, but that the maze is in the mouse.”
