Democracy NOW! DN! Newly leaked documents have revealed how U.S. negotiators at the U.N. climate summit in Warsaw are opposing efforts to help developing countries adapt to climate change. According to an internal U.S.
briefing memo seen by Democracy Now!, the U.S. delegation is worried the talks in Warsaw will "focus increasingly on blame and liability" and that poor nations will be "seeking redress for climate damages from sea level rise, droughts, powerful storms and other adverse impacts." Providing access to sustainable energy to an additional 500 million people by 2030.
That's the aim of "Energizing Development", a new initiative unveiled by the European Commission on Monday. With a budget of 50 million euros, the EU will give technical advice to those developing countries who choose to participate in the programme.Â
Led by the United Nations Secretary General Ban Ki-Moon, the plan also seeks to improve energy efficiency and double the amount of renewable energy currently used.
The EU wants the private sector to get involved. To encourage companies to participate, Brussels will create guarantee schemes with banks to provide investors more assurance that their money is safe.Â
Mid and long-term private investment has been scarce. Many companies still fear the risks of funding renewable energies are too high while benefits are too slow to emerge.Â

European Foreign ministers on Monday agreed on an oil embargo against Iran amid fears that Iran's government is developing nuclear weapons. The sanctions could go into effect as early as next week. EU member states who already have oil contracts with Iran, such as Greece, will have 5 months to fulfill them.
The ministers also agreed extra restrictive measures on the country's central bank. EU foreign policy chief Catherine Ashton said the sanctions want to persuade Iran to go back to the negotiating table.
Because of the sanctions Tehran is threatening western countries with blocking the access to the Persian Gulf. Swedish Foreign Carl Bildt said he believes that "sanctions alone" are not the answer.
Europe is Iran's second largest trading partner, accounting for 20% of its oil exports. But as China is their biggest customer, analysts think the embargo won't destroy Iran's economy. The U.S and the European Union want Asian countries also to join the embargo.
Campaigners are calling on European ministers -- attending the Durban Climate Change conference (28 Nov - 09 Dec 2011) - to follow the lead of the United Nations after it suspended a controversial carbon credits scheme that encouraged developing countries to build coal power projects.
The UN's Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) is designed to encourage global financial markets to invest in low carbon projects and has created a trading market worth USD$144 billion.
Now pictures have now emerged showing how open cast mining at the Sasan thermal power plant in Madhya Pradesh in India, funded through carbon credits, has forced some of the world's poorest from their homes and left communities destroyed.
The UN suspended coal projects from the carbon offset scheme because the rules used to calculate emission reductions had resulted in the creation of "artificial carbon credits". It will now look at new methods of monitoring and verifying the effects of carbon credits.
Investors in the Clean Development Mechanism are frustrated by the repeated changes to the rules governing which projects qualify for carbon credits, and increasingly disillusioned with the low price of carbon determined through the mechanism.

Alex Mero was born in Belgium in 1969 and grew up in Brussels. Soon he became a passionate traveler and a great observer of worldwide cultural diversity. Over the years, he became more fascinated by the variety of life perceptions within different cultures. Today the writer shares his experiences through the inspirational literary genre of Philofiction. Philosophical fiction takes, as its starting point, the recognition of difference and multiplicity of the world in which we live. The novels are often based on dialogues that encourage an exploration of different thought processes in which we find an identification of the boundaries that define us. Alex Mero offers a free Internet distribution of his publications in several languages, to facilitate access to his literature for each one of us. At the same time, the novelist participates in educational programs in developing countries and he is involved in several projects based on intercultural dialogue.

The End of Poverty? is a daring, thought-provoking and very timely documentary by award-winning filmmaker, Philippe Diaz, revealing that poverty is not an accident. It began with military conquest, slavery and colonization that resulted in the seizure of land, minerals and forced labor. Today, global poverty has reached new levels because of unfair debt, trade and tax policies -- in other words, wealthy countries exploiting the weaknesses of poor, developing countries.
The End of Poverty? asks why today 20% of the planet's population uses 80% of its resources and consumes 30% more than the planet can regenerate?
The film has been selected to over 25 international film festivals and will be released in US theatres starting November 13, 2009. Directed by Philippe Diaz, produced by Cinema Libre Studio with the Robert Schalkenbach Foundation, 104mins, 2008, USA, documentary in English, Spanish, and French with English Subtitles. www.theendofpoverty.com

In our emerging markets roundtable discussion, Rudy Martin, Larry Edelson and Tony Sagami focus on a new acronym â CIVETS, which refers to Colombia, Indonesia, Vietnam, Egypt, Turkey and South Africa â all developing economies that show a lot of promise.
Later, in our Picks and Pans segment, Rudy Martin delves into two particular markets â Colombia and Turkey â and uncovers specific stocks that could offer huge returns.
We then take a closer look at the country that now dominates the Eastern Hemisphere and other emerging markets around the world â China. Our Asia analyst Tony Sagami tells us why its economy is likely to keep humming, despite a slowdown in the United States and Europe, and how investors can take advantage.

A weak agreement. A failure. A deception. A farce.
The United Nations climate conference in Copenhagen has not become the turning point in history that many people on earth were hoping for.
Despite the urgency of global warming, the worldâs political leadership did not manage to step beyond its own shadows.
In the end, national economic and political interests weighed more heavily than the general global interests.
Our global environment, particularly in developing countries, now is the main victim. Financing innovation in green technology will remain difficult.
The only issue agreed on is the need to keep global warming limited to a rise of 2 degrees celsius. Still undecided is the how and when that is to happen.
Copenhagen did not only lack political will, but it also lacked organizational skills. Thatâs disappointing and embarrassing, certainly given the enormity of what was at stake:
reducing global warming so that planet earth remains a place to live for future generations.

http://greenmedianews.com Evan Kopelson interviews Jason Hartke, the Vice President of National Policy at the US Green Building Council ("the USGBC"). Jason says we're losing $130 Billion Dollars at home by not realizing our energy efficiency in buildings, and we have an opportunity not only to reclaim that money, but to help influence developing countries who are right now "locking in these inefficiencies" in their own buildings, and we have the opportunity to share knowledge and technology with these countries, therefore compounding the benefits of what we learn and implement in the US, and having a compounded reduction in greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions as a result. In other words, retrofitting buildings for energy efficiency can help save the world. No, Hartke didn't say that in so many words. But that's the upshot of this interview, and it's a message hopefully President Obama will embrace here at COP15 tomorrow.
http://greenmedianews.com Today at COP15 negotiations threatened to break down as the African nations and developing countries almost walked out of the talks. Meanwhile Canada continues to face international scrutiny and the ire of it's own citizens for being among the worst global citizens due to the Canadian government's efforts to block climate change reform. A fake news release earlier today announced grand sweeping reform in Canada, and to the dismay of it's own citizens who learned it was a hoax. Evan Kopelson reports live from the Bella Center in Copenhagen, at COP15, the climate change conference.
The Daily Energy Report for December 17th, 2009:
Growing frustration over the lack of progress at the COP15. US willing to participate in $100 billion a year fund for developing countries.
The UK struggles to balance low energy prices and low carbon emissions.
The growth of the global LED market.

Stavros Dimas, EC member in charge of Environment held a press conference on Thursday to present a proposal on climate financing.
The European Commission pledges an annual contribution of 15 billion euros a year by 2020 to help developing countries fight climate change. By 2020, developing countries will need around 100 billion euros a year for climate change adaptation and mitigation measures. Up to half of the amount could be covered by public money. The rest should ideally come from the private sector through the carbon market, which could generate as much as 38 billion euros a year for developing countries by 2020.
The proposal forms part of the blocs negotiating position for international talks on a post-2012 climate deal, intended to be agreed in Copenhagen this December. Lack of progress on financial support for developing countries has so far stalled the talks.
Targets and actions to fight climate change are to stay below 2°C, global emissions need to peak before 2020 and then be cut to ... Distributed by Tubemogul.
Many countries are facing the problem of having a large obese population. Being obese means being prone to various medical conditions and being more at risk to developing certain types of diseases. Losing weight is not something that can be done overnight. If you want to loose weight whilst continuing eating hamburgers, hot dogs, pizzas and doughnuts on a daily basis then yes, it is very difficult to loose weight. Losing weight usually requires changing your lifestyle: reducing your fat intake and eating healthy food. Many people say that they are fat due to hereditary reasons. Nice excuse to not doing anything with their problem! People do not get fat on their own. People do get fat by consuming more calories than the amount of calories they burn. Not eating and doing crash diets is not the solution to losing weight. When you crash diet you lower your metabolic rate, which is the body's natural ability to burn fat. When you return to your old eating habits you gain back all the weight that you lost and ...
