Il film, girato da settembre a novembre 1971, fu presentato il 2 luglio 1972 al XXIII festival di Berlino in una versione di lavorazione della durata di due ore e venti minuti; la giuria del festival gli attribuÃÂÃÂÃÂì l'Orso d'oro. Nella versione definitiva del film vennero eliminate alcune sequenze e fu modificata la struttura dell'opera, che inizialmente prevedeva l'introduzione di ognuno degli otto segmenti da parte di un personaggio e una cornice generale ai racconti costituita dalla presenza "a posteriori" di Geoffrey Chaucer (interpretato da Pasolini) che rifletteva sul suo lavoro. Quest'ultima cornice narrativa venne parzialmente mantenuta, ridotta e inserita nel film soltanto al termine di quattro racconti[1].
