After tasting the 2007 Derenoncourt California Napa Valley Coombsville Syrah with the Montesquieu Winery team, Stéphane describes the origin of working with this cool climate site in Coombsville, and his impression of the 2007 vintage. He prefers the style of Syrah from cooler climates over warmer climate sites, sharing that even though making great Syrah in California is challenging, the reward is a wine with incredible energy and freshness.
Stéphane shares he is very happy with this vintage as it shows what is very difficult to keep intact with Syrah-fresh vibrant fruit. "I love the finish, very open, fresh and alive," he says.
http://www.BKWineTours.com *Come on a wine & food tour with BKWine!* --- Cortes de Cima: interview with winemaker Hamilton Reis. Cortes de Cima is a winery in the Alentejo region in Portugal, an hour an a half east of Lisbon. Their total range includes more than a dozen wines. The main:
Chamine is the entry level wine, a blend with mainly Portuguese grape varieties (aragonez, trincadeira and touriga nacional) and syrah, made to be fruity, silky tannins, young and fresh, an everyday wine.
The cuvee Cortes de Cima, in a way the flagship of the winery. It is a blend with the same grapes plus a bit of cabernet sauvignon, a bit barrel ageing (French and American oak). More full bodied, more complex, rich, deep.
Then come the varietals:
Syrah (of different kinds), trincadeira, and touriga nacional varietal wines (and some other). They are even more ambitious wines. The objective is to showcase the grape varieties, show the wine drinker what these grape varieties mean and their true character. The touriga ...

The vineyard is located in Tuscany in the heart of the Chianti Classico region, near the Panzano village. The vineyard covers six hectares of vines, primarily sangiovese, but also some merlot, syrah and petit verdot. Jarkko makes three wines: one wine based on Merlot called Ciclope, Cyclops, the one-eyed. It is a blend including some sangiovese and syrah. A very fresh fruity, easy drinking wine. They also have one IGT wine called Pli, which is their top quality cru wine, and a Chianti Classico Candialle.

http://www.bkwine.com/wine_tours/wine_tours.htm --- Interview with Olivier the oenologue at the Domaine du Grand Tinel in Chateauneuf-du-Pape in the southern Rhone valley in France.
We’re visiting just when the harvest is in ongoing, so there’s plenty of work (and noise) in the cellar. They have just brought in all the grapes from the vineyards. This is the vintage of 2007 which was very successful in Chateauneuf since it was not subject to the damaging rain that they had in other regions of France.
The Dom. du Grand Tinel is a family property since several generations. They also have a winery called Clos Saint Paul with 14 hectares. They have some 75 ha at Grand Tinel, some 60 ha in Chateauneuf and the rest in Cotes du Rhone. The vineyards are planted primarily with grenache, syrah, counoise and muscardin (very unusual) and some cinsault. Olivier is making his first vintage in Chateauneuf and has previously worked in Mendoza in Argentina.

http://www.bkwine.com/wine_tours/wine_tours.htm --- A visit to the winery Domaine Olivier Pithon that Olivier founded in 2001. He originally comes from the Layon region in the Loire Valley but settled in Roussillon to make wine.
He came to the Calce village to taste the wines of Gerard Gauby, one of the leaders in new French winemaking. He tasted, and then he stayed.
Olivier tries to make very personal wines - with a lot of freshness, acidity, and elegance.
He makes white wines using the traditional grape varieties macabeu, grenache blanc and grenache gris. His reds are made with grenache noir, carignan, and a bit of syrah and mourvedre. In this village one can still find vines planted just after the Phylloxera, about one hundred years old!
There is a small group of hard core winemakers with similar philosophies in Calce: Pithon, Matassa, Gauby, Padie,...
Pithon explains how he works with bio-dynamism (which in some ways can be seen as an extreme form of organic vine growing) and...
Interview with Jean Boucabeille, the owner and winemaker at Domaine Boucabeille in Roussillon. It is a family property in the Roussillon in the south of France. In this video it is the new generation winemaker in the family who talks.
The vineyard comprises some 20 hectares and makes primarily red wine of the appellation Cotes du Roussillon Villages and some sweet Rivesaltes. The winery and vineyard was created from scratch on barren land in the 70s on old fashioned terraces. They grow mainly Grenache noir, carignan, mourvedre and syrah, and a bit macabeu and Grenache blanc. The soil is mainly schist (slate).

Crushpad's Michael Brill and Mike Zitzlaff are working with Tom Leykis to create a Big Bad Syrah from the Premier Coastal Vineyard in the Santa Maria Valley. Tom wants a big Syrah -- one that you'll remember as the main event.
Whether you want a crisp mineral-driven Sauvignon Blanc, or a luscious fruit-forward Syrah, you have to pay close attention to the temperature of the fermentation so that you can achieve those goals. Crushpad winemaker, Kian Tavakoli explains it all.
Often referred to as the "modern stone age" winery, Qupe has been producing award winning Rhone varietals since 1982. WineTasteTV.com's Bonnie Graves takes us into the barrel room with winemaker Bob Lindquist to taste the 2006 Syrah and Roussanne.
Nebbiolo, Chardonnay, Syrah, Refosco, Pinot Blancâ¦you name it, they're growing it. WineTasteTV.com's Bonnie Graves walks the Valley Floor with Nicholas Miller from Bien Nacido Vineyards and talks about "custom farming" and it's benefits.
Picking Syrah in the cool morning fog at Las Madres.
John and Jean Painter tend this small vineyard in the Carneros AVA just north of San Pablo bay. We showed up early to catch sunrise in the vineyard on harvest day and found thick fog rolling across this beautiful vineyard.
As John Painter explains in this video, Las Madres is planted to two different Syrah clones, which both lend their unique characteristics to wines from Las Madres.
