On this podcast, John Kelley, seasoned entrepreneur and engaging storyteller, dives into the journeys of small business owners. Join him as he uncovers the inspiring, humorous, and often tough realities they face while creating distinct and impactful brands in their industries.
Hear our discussion on outbound lead generation and sales appointment calling, inbound customer support, how Richard got his start, and some best practices for effective communication on sales and support calls.
Guest Bio:
Richard Blank is the CEO and Founder of Costa Rica's Call Center, a full-service BPO call center providing lead generation, customer service, social media support and more for US companies. He founded the company 15 years ago and has grown it to over 300 seats.
Building Relationships Through the Phone Lines: Lessons from a Telemarketing Veteran feat. Richard Blank with Costa Rica's Call Center
Key Quotes:
"I believe in synergy. I believe in circles, and I also believe in the sanctity of a meal together, breaking fast, you know, feeding ourselves, making ourselves stronger." (15:37)
"Why call them gatekeepers, and why give them such a bad rap? These are the first impressions of Emerald City. As long as you understand the protocol and you can give an excellent first impression with that company name spike, you have a chance. Get them out of that trends." (41:44)
"Leaders remember small details about you, or they dress in case your mother shows up so I can go downstairs and thank her for raising such a fine young man who's been with me for 3 years." (16:39)
Main Discussion Points:
The importance of building relationships in sales, not just trying to force a sale
Techniques for effective communication and rapport building on sales and support calls
Why it's important to treat everyone in an organization with respect, not just decision makers
How to get referrals and repeat business through exceptional customer service
Why taking time to understand the local culture is key when doing business abroad
How Costa Rica’s Call Center vets clients to avoid unethical business practices
Accents and Market Perception in Business
There's a 95% literacy rate. And say what you want. If somebody has a slight accent, to me, it still bears the mark of higher education. And if you do, it's like a beauty mark. And so I think more people are becoming more accustomed towards a Latino accent in the United States than they would an Asian or a Middle Eastern. And so that has given us some leverage in regards to growing our campaigns.
Building Relationships: The Real Key Players
what we always call the gatekeeper is the one that you should make your best friend. That's the one, you know, it's not the doctor who owns the place. It's not the doctors that work there or the nurses that work there. It's the front desk receptionist, the first one that everyone sees when they enter that ER.
Richard's Journey and Philosophy on Bravery
And two months turned into four years of learning the business from the inside out, not as a C-level executive, And then in my mid-30s, I threw my hat in the ring, and I had some maturity and impulse control and some capital. And little did I know, we just celebrated our 15th year in business. And so it's been a great ride of twists and turns. But I tell you what, fortune favors the brave. And if you do your due diligence and your dedicated practice, and you believe that you can put your chest out there and your best foot forward, then by all means, I think you should drink life. And I think you should go for it. You only get 100 years on this planet. If you're lucky. That's right. So you left your parents. How much family did you have here in the States that you just said, hey, I got to go? Well, it's all my family. And they live in Philadelphia and Colorado, Arizona. They're scattered. But how about this, my friend? When I was expected to study law or finance or economics, I kind of used my great-grandparents as an example. They came to the United States at the turn of the 20th century from Eastern Europe, moved to New York in the garment industry. Great-grandpa learned English. He ramped up a company. He took his chance and had his adventure. Just skipped a couple generations and I'm going south.
The Double-Edged Sword of Telemarketing
If it wasn't for the marketing side of things and making those cold calls and doing sales like I'm used to, then I would absolutely probably hate you, instead of wanting to have you on my show, but seeing it from the other side and knowing that these phone calls are being made for a reason, to make a living, to feed people, to put jobs out there for others. I think that what you do is important, but who can lie and say that they really enjoy it when they get that spam call and somebody's calling them to solicit them or sell something to them. I think all of us have kind of grown to hate that. So let's just start with exactly what it is that you do and what it is that you don't do as far as those things are concerned, you know, where the, the good and the bad is kind of mixed and some people's perceptions may be bad, but you can change our minds on that. Not a problem at all. In fact, from an educated point of view, hopefully your audience can make a decision.

John Kelley:
Growing up in the fire service for the last 20 years, I've learned the value of service and leadership from my years in. As a full-time firefighter and lieutenant, I’ve been in the trenches, leading teams, solving problems under pressure, and keeping my community safe. That same drive to serve and protect has shaped my approach as a marketer, where I now help government leaders and public safety agencies transform the way they connect with their communities.
I understand the unique challenges you face. As a firefighter, I’ve seen firsthand how hard it is to keep the public informed and engaged, especially when resources are stretched thin. As a marketing professional, I’ve witnessed how outdated systems and scattered communication strategies can hold organizations back. That’s why I’m passionate about leveraging tools like AI, automation, and cutting-edge marketing platforms to simplify communication, build trust, and drive efficiency in ways that make a real impact.
From streamlining community engagement for city governments to creating campaigns that strengthen public safety messaging, my mission is to make your job easier and your results stronger. Whether you're a city manager balancing tight budgets, a fire chief advocating for funding, or a marketing director trying to reach every corner of your community, I’m here to help.
Soon, I’ll be launching a newsletter packed with actionable insights, tools, and strategies to empower leaders like you. Whether you're looking to modernize your communication, increase engagement, or simply free up time to focus on what matters most, this newsletter will be your go-to resource.
Let’s connect and start a conversation about how we can work together to make your vision a reality. After all, transforming the way we communicate doesn’t just make life easier—it makes our communities stronger.

At the age of 27, Richard took a leap of faith that would forever change his trajectory. Moving to Costa Rica, he brought with him an entrepreneurial spirit and a passion for communication. His journey began with a temporary teaching position, but he could adapt and embrace the local culture that truly set the stage for his future success.
Richard's early days in San Jose were filled with challenges, from navigating a new country to understanding the nuances of local business practices. However, his fluency in Spanish and his willingness to learn from the ground up provided him with a unique advantage. He didn't just observe from a distance; he immersed himself in the community, learning from every interaction and building a support network that would become invaluable.
Transformation Utilizing Innovative Strategies. Richard's ascent to CEO was unconventional. He bypassed the traditional corporate ladder, moving directly from an entry-level position to ownership. This path allowed him to maintain a pure and untainted approach to business, one that emphasized empathy and a genuine connection with his team. Under Richard's leadership, Costa Rica's Call Center has thrived by challenging industry norms. He attributes much of the company's success to a culture that values each individual's contribution. The Big Thinker Universe. GWHQ Podcast - Season 2 - Episode 016 - Richard Blank
The Global Wellness HQ Podcast is proudly sponsored by Cash Flow Club. This is a playground for big thinkers with big ideas. We will focus on how we as a collective can improve life on our little planet.
The primary focus of our new podcast will be to bring together Mavericks, Visionaries, and Philanthropists. Together, we will create the synergy that will expand our collective universe. Join us as we interview wellness experts. Learn how you can implement and improve one dimension of wellness at a time. Our experts will share their practical tips on wellness in one of these core areas: emotional, intellectual, occupational, physical, environmental, financial, spiritual, social, or habitual. We created this podcast as a resource for anyone who is looking to integrate the Nine Elements of Holistic Wellness (NEHW) into their daily lives.
We will share big ideas about business and life in general. What big thoughts are you thinking today?
Building Business Relationships
And mind you this, my friend, prior to being transferred to you, I already gave your secretary, Catherine, a huge compliment. I told her that she was great. I told you she was great. And I'm also going to do it in writing. So when we get off the phone, you're going to tell her. And when I call your company back, not only will she remember me, She'll thank me for that compliment that I gave her because she's worked there for 10 years and no one's ever done it. She's going to tell me about your anniversary, your company culture, your direct extension. And the next thing you know, Richie's got more business because everyone loves him. And that's how you do the circle. You make nice. You touch two or three times. You build a pipeline. That's what you do, Jeff.
Embrace the Unexpected: Journey of Growth
I wanted my horizon. I wanted to leave a castle to slay a dragon so I can save a princess and be a prince, damn it. I wanted to drink life. And don't tell me that I was going to be CEO of a call center. I didn't even know what a call center was, but you didn't even know really what one was until this podcast. And so I fell into this, but I drank it. And I think that's one of the most beautiful things when you embrace the unexpected and incorporate it and grow from it because you would have never known. And so that's why I'm here today. I love it. Now, I could talk to you all day, Richard. I will be mindful of your time, I promise.
Emotional Interactions: AI's Shortcomings
There's certain times someone will want hand-holding and to spend a couple extra minutes on the phone to vent with an intake coordinator for a law firm or with their insurance company or when they're speaking with their doctor's assistant because they're emotional. And when you start doing things in that way with AI, it's really eliminating the value of that client. And so to answer your question, I do customer support.

Strategies for Spontaneous Sales
And I'm using the genius of Robin Williams of being spontaneous. I make camp. I exhaust every drop you have. vertically before i move horizontally to that next question which i'm going to be asking in an open-ended way because i'll still get your yes or no but i'll get the explanation sometimes i'll figure out where the priorities are and you could have saved me some time and so these are the greatest ways for you to breathe to be able to lower your temperature think ahead plan your notes and it's a It's a beautiful dance if people are willing to do it.
Richard's Passion for Pinball Machines
guy's garage and pull them out. And so currently today I have 15 pinball machines, six jukeboxes. I've collected air hockey tables and other retro machines because I have the space for it. And secondly, I'm willing to die on that hill. My wife can win 99.9% of the arguments. This is the one battle I'm on to fight. Please just let me have my video games and my pinball machines. If we do, I'll have a very happy marriage. I love it. Now, what's your rarest machine or your prize? Who's your favorite child? What a beautiful question. It's difficult to say, but my taste has changed through the years. Right now, my favorite decade for pinball machines were the 1970s, okay? You still had, sometimes you might have the new screens, but it's usually the wheel and the sound would be the bells that you would have. But my favorite part, and this is where I go crazy, It's the marquee art. It's the play field. So it's not a laminate or a sticker. This was painted on wood. So over the years, you can see the certain cracks. It has its specific roles. And if the cabinet and the outside is preserved and in good condition, you see some of the most amazing artwork on these machines, from the pins to where you put in the coins to the lighting. I get passionate over it and I love the restoration of it.
The Human Touch vs. AI in Customer Service
How am I going to shatter misconceptions? Yo, Jeff, you watch movies, don't you? Absolutely. The Wolf of Wall Street and Boiler Room. Glengarry Glen Ross, right? The prime gig. All that good stuff. Wow. I mean, you're screaming out, Recco, cutting ties. Everyone's standing. Closing on cold calls. I mean, come on, Gene the Machine. Golfies for closers. Please. It really depends on the environment that you're in. There's five campaigns I don't do here. It's because I'm in a very strict Catholic country and I'm a guest here. We don't do sports books, casinos, stocks, pharmacies, or sweepstakes. there's a lot of companies out there such as your bank or other places that will retain a client that will give you an upsell or some sort of referral or assistance that you might not get when you're just entering in information filling out forms waiting for somebody to respond that's the most frustrating thing when you keep pressing zero yeah and so as much as people are downsizing and trying to do things through ai AI can't give you a hug. And AI can't tell you that they know where you're coming from if your dog dies
The Power of Delegation and Growth
Or how about even this, the best part, you might even be able to start hiring people and paying salaries and delegating and promoting. And so the moment that you release that weight mentally, physically, spiritually, then you rise, right? Release whatever weight is holding you back so you can expand. That's my only suggestion for your audience. I can't thank you enough. You do the best podcast. You know, I had a great time with you today. I have the best guests. So it's all you. And Richard, thank you for being on the show.

The Human Touch vs. AI in Customer Service

Or how about even this, the best part, you might even be able to start hiring people and paying salaries and delegating and promoting. And so the moment that you release that weight mentally, physically, spiritually, then you rise, right? Release whatever weight is holding you back so you can expand. Jeff, I'm so happy to be here with you and your audience today. My name is Richard Blank. I'm the proud CEO of Costa Rica's Call Center. I'm also from Northeast Philadelphia, so I got a very good story, a vision quest of twists and turns that got me here today.

Scott Biffin is truly redefining Australian cuisine. As the "Flavor Architect," he crafts dishes that are not just meals but immersive experiences. Take his reimagined Caesar salad or the stunning “Ocean’s Palette,” which looks like an underwater seascape—each plate is a work of art. Biffin’s mastery of molecular gastronomy transforms simple ingredients using techniques like sous-vide and liquid nitrogen, creating flavors that surprise and delight.
Sustainability is at the heart of his culinary philosophy. He champions local, ethically sourced ingredients and practices root-to-stem cooking to minimize waste. By celebrating Australia’s rich produce, he inspires both diners and fellow chefs to embrace environmentally conscious practices.
Drawing from Australia’s diverse landscapes, Biffin incorporates native flavors like wattleseed and finger lime, honoring tradition while pushing culinary boundaries. His accolades, including the Rising Star Chef of the Year award, showcase his growing influence in the culinary world.
Beyond the kitchen, he mentors aspiring chefs, emphasizing that food is a powerful way to connect and create. With a second restaurant on the horizon and his cookbook, The Flavor Architect, coming soon, Scott Biffin is not just a chef to watch in 2025—he’s a visionary shaping the future of food.

The best way to encourage your business with local service advertising. Effectively promoting a business can be challenging, especially in a competitive local market. However, local service advertising (LSA) provides a powerful tool to reach potential customers right in your neighborhood. LSAs are designed to connect businesses with local customers who are actively seeking the services you provide. Here's how you can leverage LSAs to effectively encourage your business.
To understand local service advertising
Local service ads are a form of paid advertising offered by Google and other platforms. These ads appear at the top of the search list when users search for specific services in their area. Unlike traditional pay-per-click (PPC) ads, LSAs operate on a pay-per-click basis, which means that only when a potential customer contacts you directly through the ad you pay. Analysis how local service advertising can help you.
Increased visibility:
Local service advertising appears at the very top of search results, often outpacing standard PPC ads in organic search results. This prime placement increases the likelihood of potential customers seeing your business first.
Easy to use:
Configuring LSAs is straightforward. Google walks you through the process, including background checks and verification steps, to ensure your business meets their standards.
There are many ways to grow your business with local service ads. Give strength your business by signing up: -
First of all, signing up for your local service ads through Google. To qualify for the Google Guarantee badge, you will need to verify your business information, including licensing and insurance.
Pay-per-lead model:
You only pay when a lead contacts you, making LSAs a cost-effective option. This ensures that your advertising budget is spent on real leads.
LSAs include the Google Guarantee badge, which assures potential customers of the quality and reliability of your services. This can greatly increase the credibility of your business.
Conclusion:
Local service advertising is the best way to take your business to the next level. Local Service advertising can help you to find you best customers who are interested in your services. Follow the steps outlined above to get your LSAS set up and optimized, and watch your business grow with a steady flow of local lead.

Ethical Telemarketing and First Impressions
I still find telemarketing is a means to an end, and I think you should gauge the calls you make in regards to ethics. You feel comfortable making the call, or you're being shady, or as you say, just spammy. And so since I'm a guest in a Catholic country, the agents have leveraged it, and I need to make sure that they can go home and tell their parents what they do for a living. But let's be realistic here. You're looking to buy time. You're not gonna get the 10 minutes that Hollywood shows you. There's a lot of gatekeepers out there. So my suggestions for people that are doing, let's just say business-to-business type of phone calls, your first impression should be a company name spike. As much as I want to know how well Ernance CS is doing today, if you answer the call, I'm going to say, hey, Business Bros Podcast, how are you doing today? I'm going to say it better than you do. And so what it's going to do is use my anonymity as good faith. It's almost like a mystery shopper. I've been there before. So these gatekeepers reduce it a little bit. They start asking me my name and politely I will introduce myself, but I'll take it a step further.

customer support, you take notes so they don't have to repeat themselves. And I tell you what, people hedge. They say, okay, wonderful, great. Well, sometimes the answer is not wonderful. Sometimes the answer is not great. If the guy's like, I've been married 50 years and I'm the happiest in the world, that's great. Married 50 years, okay, that's great. But if they're saying, I live on one, two, three main seat, that's great. No, it's not, it's crack infested. And someone just got shot yesterday. And so if you're not sure, Those are the times when you use that monotone robot. Hernan, did you say one, two, three Main Street? Is that correct? Yes, Richard. Thank you. Then you move on because I've seen people open up rabbit holes by being excited for the worst or missing the tell sign of being positive on something. So watch that hedging. Hedging's terrible. And stop calling people sir and ma'am... potentially listening to you because you want to vent for a minute. And then we take nice notes. So when we call back, we remind you what you've spoken about. Overcoming Pressure and Following Passion
And I was under an enormous amount of pressure to go to Ivy League like my grandpa. He went to Harvard Law. My pop was at Columbia Business School. My brother went to Washington and League. And two of them graduated Germantown Academy, a very fine private school that Once again, I left in seventh grade. So there are certain areas where you shine and there are certain places where I believe that you belong and you're more comfortable. You should believe in your intuition. You shouldn't listen to the naysayers and the gray believers. I believe if you live life with good intentions, you should drink life. And for me, my passion was Spanish. My good friends, it wasn't the five hours in class or the one hour of homework. I was watching movies, listening to music, reading books, finding as many intercombios as I could just to practice my passion. Little did I know it unlocked all these doors. And when I moved to Costa Rica, I started off five steps ahead
Success Metrics and Importance of Soft Skills
In business, there's always all kinds of metrics. For me in marketing, I'm always looking at click through rates and conversion rates and all these different numbers that mean different things for the marketing space. When it comes to the call center, what do you measure as success? What metrics are you prioritizing to kind of measure that success rate? Depends on the stage of the project. If you're in a ramp up onboarding stage, you're looking at simple metrics, if they can just keep pace. And then you're focusing when you have your quality control department, if they're hitting their KPIs, which are key performance indicators, are they qualifying the call properly? Are they doing what they're being paid to do? But I, my friend, I'm always looking for the 10% wiggle. Where's the soft skills? When do we talk about the dog? Or Philadelphia? Or going fishing? Or one of those things that come up when I look at your company's bio and see how freaking cool it is. I mean, Business Bros Podcast, man, I could read about you guys for hours and listen to, you know, all of the episodes. And so these are the sort of things that just, as I'm saying, just add momentum. I hate standstill starts. I think you can catch people in a certain way and just connect with them in certain ways. So that's kind of my thoughts to that, my good friend.
Reach Out If You're Interested - No Strings Attached
if you can leave us with some final thoughts, but at the same time, plug your stuff. If people want to reach out, they're like, look, this guy understands communication. Richard knows what's up. He knows how to communicate. He knows how to train his staff. This is the kind of call center I want behind my business. How can they reach out and find out more information to work with you? First, your amazing audience needs to put their checkbook away. I'm not selling anything. There's no 1995 seminar. I don't have a book. But if you want to get in touch with me, definitely buy a first-class plane ticket. Come down here and visit me. But I do have an extremely large Facebook fan page, and I got 114,000 local Costa Ricans. And it will give your audience a real grasp of the business process outsourcing industry in Central America. You shouldn't listen to the naysayers and the gray believers. I believe if you live life with good intentions, you should drink life. And for me, my passion was Spanish. My good friends, it wasn't the five hours in class or the one hour of homework.

Now, real quick, we're north of Panama, south of Nicaragua. We're the only democratic society in Central America. It's amazing
