Barclays Chief Executive Bob Diamond has announced his resignation this morning with immediate effect, over an interest rate-rigging scandal. He is the highest-profile victim so far in a probe that spans a dozen major banks across the world. This follows the resignation on Monday of the Chairman, Marcus Agius. After the chairman's resignation, politicians and shareholders continued to call for the chief executive's resignation. Agius will however temporarily take over the running of Barclays until a replacement is found. In a statement released by Mr Diamond he said 'I am stepping down because the external pressure on the bank risked "damaging the franchise' The move comes less than a week after the bank was fined a record amount by regulators in the UK and US for trying to manipulate inter-bank lending rates. Which underpin trillions of pounds worth of financial transactions. Prime Minister David Cameron has launched an inquiry into banking standards, describing the rigging of Libor rates as "a scandal". Mr Diamond will however still appear before MPs on the Treasury Committee to answer questions about the Libor affair on Wednesday.
David Cameron has backed the right of Christians to wear a cross in the workplace during Prime Minister's Questions, and pledged to change the law if necessary to make the situation clear -- A new opinion Poll confirms that most people in Scotland want marriage to stay between a man and a woman -- Claims that the legalisation of euthanasia in Holland has 'not' led to an increase in the number of cases, have been questioned by a leading pro-life doctor -- Fourteen NHS abortion clinics have been found to have broken the rules, by allowing doctors to pre-sign forms authorising a termination -- Liberal Democrat minister Vince Cable has said that 'changing the definition of marriage is unnecessary' -- A Canadian woman who was diagnosed with cancer while she was pregnant and refused to have an abortion, has been nominated in a Mum of the Year competition -- Members of the Church of England's General Synod have voted to overwhelmingly back the right of Christians to live out their faith in public life -- And finally, with less than 2 weeks to go until the start of the London Olympics, Christian archer Jennifer Nichols has been drawing some extra inspiration, - from her 'quiver'.
The government has been accused of dragging its feet over a change to the law which would improve free speech, by removing the word insulting from Section 5 of the Public Order Act -- New Government plans to reform the House of Lords, has revealed that the proportion of Church of England Bishops is set for a further cut -- Conservative MP David Mowat, says he favours gay marriage, but wants David Cameron to drop the proposal because it is alienating the party's core voters -- Lib Dem leader Nick Clegg has said he wants to allow gay weddings in churches -- A Divorce App is being developed as part of a multi-million-pound scheme aimed at couples trying to end their marriage -- Women in London are being encouraged to stock up on the morning-after pill for free, in preparation for disruption caused by this summer's Olympic Games -- A Christian pre-school in Norwich has been commended by an Ofsted inspector for being 'the most harmonious setting she had ever visited' -- And a hotel in Newcastle upon Tyne has replaced traditional copies of the Gideon's Bible with a Kindle e-reader, pre-loaded with the Bible text.
(1936) A global war begins in 1940. This war drags out over many decades until most of the people still alive (mostly those born after the war started) do not even know who started it or why. Nothing is being manufactured at all any more and society has broken down into primitive localized communities. In 1966 a great plague wipes out most of what people are left but small numbers still survive. One day a strange aircraft lands at one of these communities and its pilot tells of an organization which is rebuilding civilization and slowly moving across the world re-civilizing these groups of survivors. Great reconstruction takes place over the next few decades and society is once again great and strong. The world's population is now living in underground cities. In the year 2035, on the eve of man's first flight to the moon, a popular uprising against progress (which some people claim has caused the wars of the past) gains support and becomes violent. Raymond Massey, Edward Chapman, Ralph Richardson, Director: William Cameron Menzies.
The Conservative Party could lose up to 30 Parliamentary seats in the next general election if it continues with its plans to redefine marriage -- A poll conducted in the Prime Ministers own constituency of Witney has revealed that 75 per cent of those who voted for David Cameron at the last general election, 'don't' want marriage redefined -- An Anglican Lay Reader has been suspended from preaching and leading worship for 2 months by the acting Archdeacon of Croydon for encouraging his congregation to sign the Coalition for Marriage petition -- Gloucestershire County Council has removed all references to God from its prayer, spoken at the start of council meetings -- The BBC is to review a controversial sex education video for children as young as nine following concerns from parents -- Sir Paul Coleridge, a senior family court judge, has launched 'The Marriage Foundation', and says that the new organization aims to boost marriage, and curb Britain's divorce culture -- And former Olympic Champion Marion Jones has been talking about meeting God and her humbling experience in prison whilst serving time for perjury.
