Traditional music lessons focus on learning notes and sheet music. At the School of Rock, we take a different approach.
In this video Joanna Richard, Boise Keyboard Instructor, explains.
To play rock music you really need to understand chords, chord progressions, and how to play by ear.
Ideally your child will learn both to read sheet music and play by ear, but it is not absolutely necessary.

There are debates among drummers over what is better; plastic tipped or wood tipped drumsticks.
In this next video Louie Ruiz, Boise Drum Teacher, explains what type of drumsticks your child should get.
The problem with nylon (plastic) tipped drumstick is they fall off or break during a gig. Then you have to hit your cymbal with a nub of a drumstick. It sounds awful.
Wood is definitely the preference.

At the School of Rock we have lessons called âjam sessionsâ or âaccess passâ lessons. Jam sessions are when a group of students get together in a band setting to play music. So we will put a drummer, guitarist, bassist, keyboarder, and a singer together to practice songs.
This can be a bit intimidating for newbie students but also very powerful.
In this video Louie Ruiz, Boise Music Instructor , explains why a beginner student should come to jam sessions.

There are advantages to having an electric drum set but is it the best when your child is learning how to play the drums?
Louie Ruiz, Boise Drum Teacher, explains
Electric drum sets have sounds that are sampled from high-end organic drum sets in a studio under ideal conditions. So theoretically they produce a perfect sound.
Acoustic drum sets give you a feel and resonance that canât be found on electric drum sets.

Many parents are worried that if their child wants to play drums they will need to buy a full drum set to practice.
In this next video Louie Ruiz, Boise Drum Instructor, answers this concern.
Starting with only a snare drum or a practice pad, your child will quickly become bored and give it up.
Although a full drum set is not necessary at first it is important to have something your child can use to make music and beats.
