Gilgit Baltistan, June 30, 2015:- India raised objection on June 8 elections in Gilgit Baltistan, people of Gilgit Baltistan out rightly rejected elections but Pakistan bulldozed all voices of reason and dissent. It went ahead with the sham elections, ISI barred local leaders to contest elections, hundreds and thousands of Pakistani’s were transported on the voting day, it was a drama and leaders were once again selected and not elected. Pakistan Muslim League (N) has emerged victorious in the recently held elections to Gilgit Baltistan legislative assembly. The party has won 14 seats out of the total 24 -- enough to form the government on its own. However, the nationalists allege the PML (N) has followed the suit of its predecessor Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) by rigging elections. It has been a tradition in Gilgit Baltistan that whatsoever party holds power in Islamabad tries to influence the electorate to win elections. Earlier, in the 2009 elections, the PPP swept the polls in the mountainous region, when it was holding power at the centre. Nationalists say any party, whether PML (N) or PPP, operates on the instructions of Pakistan’s spy agency -- ISI --- in the disgruntled region, as it helps them in winning the elections. The first election for Gilgit Baltistan Legislative Assembly (GBLA) was held in 2009, after the Gilgit-Baltistan Empowerment and Self-Governance Order-2009 was passed by the Pakistani cabinet ‘granting the region self-rule and autonomy.’Prior to this, the region used to be directly ruled from Islamabad. The nationalists have been opposing the act and holding elections in the disputed region, as they demand freedom from the Pakistani misrule. However, their resolve is silenced with draconian laws.

Apart from the rampant corruption in the entire administrative system, people continue to bear the highhandedness of the puppet regime. These people have gathered here to protest against a police official of Muzzafarabad region who killed a vegetable vendor for refusing to give money to the officer. Traders allege the vendor, Aslam, who came from Punjab to set up his own business in the region, was taken into custody by the official who brutally tortured him leading to his death. The medical students in capital Muzaffarabad recently took to huge protests against the lack of recognition of their institutes. The demand of their rights, mainly affiliation with a recognized university brought out the anger in them against the apathetic government in Islamabad. Students said their local degrees stand of no use outside PoK. Pakistan has kept the remote region of PoK away from basic rights and education to counter any dissent. It has not even given recognition to the selected few colleges and universities that exist in the name of education sector here. Protestors claim due to the absence of the names of their medical colleges in the official list, they cannot take exams or get jobs elsewhere. Pakistan government has set a quota system for Kashmiri students in the medical colleges across Pakistan but has ignored the plight of students studying in Pakistani Kashmir because of the disputed nature of the region. But the youth of PoK claim that thousands of students are not able to get admission into even these colleges, as the reserved seats are filled by their counterparts from Pakistan.
Muzaffarabad, PoK, June 9: As new admissions for schools have begun in Pakistan occupied Kashmir, the private institutes are charging a huge amount of money to the people of the region. Pakistan has found itself in a tight spot after its failure to prevent an audacious terror attack on an airborne military helicopter in Pakistan occupied Kashmir, in which several foreign diplomats and their wives were killed. The downing of the Pakistani military helicopter in Gilgit and prompt claim of responsibility for the act by Tehreek-e-Taliban, Pakistan (TTP) is a rude dampener for the government of Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif which has of late been trying to attract foreign investment in the country. An embarrassed Pakistan tried to downplay the crash, Defence Minister Khwaja Asif said the helicopter crashed in Naltar Valley after it developed a technical fault. However, TTP spokesman Muhammad Khorasani not only promptly claimed responsibility for the act but also said that Nawaz Sharif was the actual target of the attack.
Gilgit Baltistan, May 05, 2015: The call of the people of Gilgit Baltistan has been going unheard for decades now. The continued denial of political rights by Pakistan in the region is fuelling dissatisfaction by the day. The people of Gilgit Baltistan have realized that Islamabad is taking them for a ride for years. From basic amenities to the citizenship rights, everything has been taken back by the puppet regime from the locals of the region. Even the rich natural resources are being plundered by Pakistan, without paying any royalty to the locals. Gilgit Baltistan was a part of the erstwhile princely state of Jammu and Kashmir. Pakistan, which has illegally occupied it for over six decades, has been ruling it through proxies. While successive Pakistani government have always kept up the sham of championing "self determination" for the people of Gilgit, it has continuously suppressed their rights denying them basic, constitutional and human rights. It has become increasingly clear that the promises made by politicians here are as elusive as ever. Pakistani security apparatus has been fostering sectarianism in order to retain its stranglehold on Gilgit. The region has also become a theatre of training camps for terror groups funded by Pakistan's main spy agency, the ISI.
PoK, April 28: Life in Pakistan occupied Kashmir has always been victim to the ruthless behavior of the Pakistan authority ruling in the region. This time it is the teachers who had been working under different projects allotted by UNICEF. Gilgit Baltistan, April 21, 2015: With elections to begin in may in Gilgit Baltistan, the people and opposition parties are apprehensive about rigging of the elections by ruling party. In the past too, rigging and sectarianism had dominated the election scene in the region.

Muzaffarabad, PoK, February 24, 2015:- The Pakistani government has failed to develop state-of-the art infrastructure in Pakistan occupied Kashmir. The roads in the region are in dismal condition, and using of sub-standard material, by the authorities, in its construction causes frequent landslides, putting the lives of the people at risk. The Muzafafrabad-Srinagar Highway, which is the vial trade link between the two sides of Kashmir, is in a dismal state, with damages and landslides, caused by the September 2014 floods, at many places. However, despite passing of several months, the authorities have failed to rebuild this connectivity and alleviate the damages. The highway was constructed after the 2005 earthquake by National Highways Authority (NHA) of Pakistan. However, using the substandard material in its construction, the road, which is a hilly terrain, often faces landslides. The Pakistan Occupied Kashmir, which is in illegal occupation of Pakistan, has been the victim of government’s apathy since 1947, and the authorities have failed to improve the standard of living in the region.
Pakistan/Muzaffarabad, PoK, February 17, 2015: Pakistan may be in denial about its involvement in Afghanistan or about supporting Taliban, but none another it's ex President Parvez Musharraf has spilled the beans. He confirms that Pakistan's ISI is supporting Taliban. India's position stands vindicated. Former President of Pakistan Pervez Musharraf has said that under his regime, Pakistan had tried to undermine the Afghan government led by ex-president Hamid Karzai. He also added that spies in Pakistan's Inter Services Intelligence (ISI) had given birth to the Taliban after 2001 because the Karzai government had an overwhelming number of non-Pashtuns and officials who were said to favour India, "In President Karzai's times, yes, indeed, he was damaging Pakistan and, therefore, we were working against his interest."That is where the intelligence work comes in. Intelligence being in contact with Taliban groups. Definitely they were in contact, and they should be," the 71-year-old former dictator told The Guardian Former Pakistani president spilled the beans but stayed mum on Pakistan's role in fomenting terrorism in Jammu and Kashmir. Vienna/Muzaffarabad, PoK, February 10, 2015: Despite proclamations, Pakistan’s export of terror to neighboring countries continues. Kashmiri nationalists allege Pakistan occupied Kashmir or PoK has virtually become a recruitment and training hub for anti-India groups. There seems to be no end to Pakistan’s support to terror, via Pakistan Occupied Kashmir or PoK. Nationalist leaders have for long complained about the mushrooming of terror camps in the remote region, which operate with impunity despite opposition from all corners. Terror outfits like the Lashkar-e-Tayeba or LeT and the Jamaat-ud-Dawa or JuD look towards PoK’s mountainous terrain to undertake training of youth to further their agenda. At a recent conference on "Terrorism and its impact on the South Asian region" in Vienna, Jammu Kashmir International Peoples Alliance said religious intolerance and extremism were major the threats to peace in the region. Pakistan, which has illegally occupied PoK for the over six decades, has been training and arming militants to wage proxy war against India, since the late seventies. Publicly, the Pakistani government maintains that it is a victim of terrorism and will not allow any militant groups to operate from its soil. Rhetoric apart, much of the terror infrastructure in PoK has remained intact.
Muzaffarabad, February 03, 2015: Angry protests over acute electricity crisis, Muzaffarabad comes to a halt. Amid pitch darkness and no electricity, markets are shut, offices locked. Students, common people, residents of Muzaffarabad take to streets every evening like this, tired of load shedding for up to 20 hours every day, these people are angry and agitated. Water and power development authority or WAPDA is solely responsible for the acute power crisis in PoK. WAPDA is diverting PoK's share of electricity to Pakistani towns and cities. As a result, education, business and people from all walks of life, mostly the poor are the worst affected. It is not the first time that people have shut down their businesses and come out to protest against government's arbitrary diversion of electricity. Many times in the past the protests have turned violent. Despite resistance from public, Mangla Dam was raised to divert PoK's natural resources to Pakistan. Whenever opposition intensifies, Pakistan sends them inflated bills. No one is listening to the cries of common people of PoK. The international community should intervene and stop this open loot of natural resources by Pakistan.
Gilgit Baltistan, January 27, 2015: After the gruesome attack on the Army School in Peshwar, the world thought that Pakistan would take stern action against all forms of terrorism. Ironically Pakistan has maintained a status quo and is still adopting a selective approach when it comes to dealing with terrorism. The biggest victims of Pakistan double standards, the People of Gilgit Baltistan have already drawn conclusion that the situation in Pakistan will very soon be like Iraq and Syria. Pakistan today is referred as a safe haven for terrorists, after all the notorious terrorist Osama bin Laden was found in Abbotabad, Pakistan, and hundreds of terrorist training camps are dotted across Pakistan. The militant training camps continue to exist, reports say that Tehreek e Taliban and Afghanistan had forged an alliance and both resolved to strengthen the ISIS footprint in Pakistan and Pakistan occupied Kashmir, the core agenda of the group is to target the Shia community, people here in Gilgit Baltistan feel that if the situation continues be like this then it will be Syria and Iraq like the scenario here.

Activists, campaigners and members of the civil society gathered in several cities across Pakistan on Friday (January 16) to mark one month since the deadly attack by Taliban gunmen on the Army Public School (APS) in Peshawar in which over 140 people, including 134 children, were systematically gunned down. Muzaffarabad, PoK, December 30, 2014:- Roads in PoK in a bad shape, Pakistan directly responsible for the poor infrastructure, people of Trarkhal waiting for concrete road for last 20 years. This road in Trarkhal is full of potholes, and unfit for travel & transportation. Its dilapidated condition speaks volume about the pathetic state of affairs here. While on papers this road is under construction for the past 20 years, and under constant repair & maintenance, drawing public funds for its annual upkeep without serving its true purpose as a highway. Traveling here continues to remain a bumpy ride. It is a result of ignorance and apathy of officials that infrastructure is so poor. Traditionally this was a trade route and earlier historically as well. Now it’s like a ‘C’ grade city with poor infrastructure, kids here have never seen a concrete road, and during rains this place turn into a dirty well, whereas in winters its snow everywhere. Ultimately, living in this sham of democracy, the common people bear the brunt of this apathy.

Muzaffarabad, December 16, 2014: Pakistan goes ahead with Chinese projects in PoK defying local resistance, Islamabad selling Pakistan’s natural resources to China without consent of Kashmiris. Notwithstanding India’s objections and International norms to China-backed developmental projects in PoK, Pakistan is going ahead with its plans, including the multi-billion dollar Sino-Pak economic corridor. Chinese strategy vis-à-vis PoK appears to be heading toward gaining tacit control of the region — both militarily and politico-diplomatically. By increasing investments and sponsoring various "development projects" in the Gilgit-Baltistan region of PoK, the activities involving several thousand Chinese personnel belonging to the construction corps of the People's Liberation Army (PLA) seem to point towards an expansionist Chinese geo-strategic agenda in the region. China's Western Highway, also known as the Lhasa-Kashgar/Xinjiang Highway connects Xinjiang to Tibet. From Quilanaldi, the road branches off to the Khunjerab Pass and, subsequently, becomes the Karakoram Highway right up to Gilgit. Pakistan is also selling off mines in the region. Many depend on the local administration for drinking water. But residents allege that in the light of no response from government the problem manifests, year after year. With 86 percent of water being declared unfit for consumption, the problem is becoming grave by the day. Water borne diseases like dysentery, cholera and typhoid are common complaints among the local population. The Neelum Valley Project was intended to solve the problem of water scarcity in the Himalayan region, but much of the water harnessed here, has been diverted to the big cities of Pakistan. The erratic monsoons have led to a dip in the water table. The drainage from surrounding areas has polluted several lakes too. Locals say the water supply is infected by the sewer water.

Muzaffarabad, PoK, November 4th, 2014: Pakistan is facing an existential crisis in its Administration & Rule of the region under its de facto control, but rather than exercising introspection and correcting its ways, the Central Government in Islamabad is playing the age old diversionary tactics of divide & rule. It has once again raked the Kashmir issue with the United Nations, formally objecting to the recently announced State Assembly Elections in the State of Jammu & Kashmir in India, which is a clear indication & witness to the flourishing democratic process, and Rule of Law in India, and registered a large voter turnout. As part of its ongoing tactics, the Government in Islamabad is under immense pressure to divert its electorates, especially POK’s attention away from internal civil turmoil, plummeting economy and terrorist-based violence, rising civil unrest in PoK, denial of equal rights and opportunities, muzzling of freedom of speech and expression, by raking up the issue of Kashmir.
