My wife's been in the hospital for a week (for migraines, as usual), and was afraid our new Papillon puppy Savina would have forgotten her. As you can see from this video, this fear was most unfounded.
The dogs' excitement doesn't come close to matching mine- I'm so glad she's home. Diamond took good care of her, but I'm glad she's back under my TLC.
This was Savina's first trip to Lake Michigan at Berger Park on Chicago's far north side in the Edgewater neighborhood.
At the end of the clip is a memorial to our previous dog Hilde, who while playing in my mother's yard in Indy a few weeks ago, ran out into the street and got run over.
We didn't get Savina to "replace" her, but because we've always preferred to have more than one dog, and I'm at pause in my nursing training, so I can focus on puppy training.
Her cuteness and her unique personality have mixed some joy into our grief, but Hilde is still sorely missed. At some point when the pain is less, I'll upload the last videos I shot of her, and a slideshow memorial.
Savina's now 11 weeks old, and her personality continues to grow. She's quite the character.
At long last, my internet connection is restored. It was a comedy of errors, but I'm not laughing... I'm just glad to have it back.
I've lots of great vids to upload, but my ISP (2 syllables, 2nd one rhymes with "mast") is down more than up, and when up, its more like dial up than broadband, so this will have to do you until they get their bits and bytes sorted out.
This is Savina, we got her 2 days ago. She's named after a saint who was known for caring for people suffering.
As you can see, she's quite indomitable and intelligent, and right now she's on my lap trying to help me type this, so I'd best keep it short.
Tutorial of how to start a rug using the half hitch knot/stitch. I just discovered this technique, but I find it the easiest way to start a rug. The start is very strong too, as strong as a braided start, and much stronger than a chain stitch start.
For more on this wonderful craft which is the most beautiful way to recycle old clothes, plastic bags, hosiery, etc., go to my tutorial blog- http://toothbrushrugs.blogspot.com

While back home and filming the sedum vids, my brother came up and insisted we film this.
This has got to be the lamest visual pun ever... it combines "adult" subject matter with 3rd grade humor.
Maybe one or the other of us is adopted...
My wife likes to kinetically work out her migraine pain. This was the "whack-a-mole" type toy my mother had. The dogs didn't know what to make of it.
Uploading vids like this is a bit painful though, since Hilde died several days later (run over by a car)
I'd tried to shoot the same thing days before with the help of an old buddy of mine. The tutorial part came out really lousy, but when he shot this bit of insanity, at least the video came out well!
2nd video from the same event
My wife Tess explaining her Christian tattoos to my mother's neighbors while the dogs mug for attention.
Hilde, the brown and white, got run over by a car several days later. It will be a while before I can post any purely Hilde and Killian... or just Killian... videos.

My wife Tess explaining the history and symbolism behind her Sator Square Snake tattoo to a friend. The Sator Square is an ancient Christian anagram/palindrome- see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sator_Arepo_Tenet_Opera_Rotas for more.
She designed the basic concept, the tattoo was made into flesh art by Zach of Deluxe Tattoo, Chicago
Stay tuned to where ever you saw this for Tess' explanation, commentary, and Witness regarding this wonderful work of art (thanks Zach!)
Check your mind... is it open? How about your underwear... fitting well, not too tight, not wedged up? Getting enough dietary fiber to have good daily BMs? If you said no to any of those questions, this video isn't for you. Same goes if you're against tattooing.
Tattooing is an activity done by adults in an adult setting. Hence the pictures on the walls, state of dress, and the badinage reflect this. So... if you're not into the scene, or it upsets you, then for the love of Big Bird, don't watch this video!
-----
Rather than capture the entire tattoo process this time, I just caught some segments of the process. As usual, my wife Tess came in with a sketch and a concept, and as usual, Zach of Deluxe Tattoo, Chicago, did a great job rendering it. The "Sator Square" is an ancient Christian palindrome/code.

Over all, I enjoyed this series. I might try shooting shorter segments in normal FPS, and I need to work on smoother panning... which may not be possible with the cheap little pocket tripod I'm using. Hope you've enjoyed it too!
I was up early again today, so I went to the lake again, and this time the weather was much more cooperative. Most of these were shot at the slower frame rate, though one is at normal. My pups make their usual cameo, as does another dog whose friendliness to mine surprised her owner.
Berger Park is in Edgewater on Chicago's far north side, 6200 north. If you would like to download the videos or edit them, you may do so at Veoh or from my blog home page.

I was hoping to get the sunrise, but it was too cloudy.
The camera is on a tripod sitting on the rocks, the video shot in the slower frames per second night mode.
I'm amazed my butterfly dogs didn't fly off their leashes to try to play with this fellow. He seemed pretty comfortable with my presence. My father always called them "tree rats" hence my use of that term in the video.
Now at Berger Park...
The weather has been MAGICAL here in Chicago the last few days, especially by the lake. The water is often warmer than the air temp, so we've had lots of fog.
It was especially apt and touching that it was so this morning, as today's our 13th anniversary, and we honeymooned in the UP of Michigan, where it was like this EVERY morning.

I was surprised to see the protest going today down at Sacred Heart at Granville & Sheridan in Chicago's far northside Edgewater community, and even more surprised when this serendipitously named bus ("Free Enterprise") that it revealed a number of the students from the school gleefully hamming it up with the rat, taking pictures and video, etc.
Gotta love America- the labor folks have the freedom of speech to put the rat up, and the students have the freedom of speech to mug for the camera with it!
While one of the best things about this craft is that it recycles garments, linens, etc., which would be disposed of into something beautiful, durable, and usable, a hazard you run with that is... what do you do if you want to repeat a color or patten and you can't?
These two videos take you through this process with me and my wife as we address this problem with a rug I'm finishing off.

This particular alley, just off Lake Michigan, always has interesting air currents. This day, it also had a lot of loose trash from Memorial Day Weekend parties.
I understand why this was written here... I see piles of dog droppings left all over the alley.
I just thought this was another poignant slice of urban life.
Hmmm... would this be graffiti I wonder?
