April 2, 2012 Rev. Donald Vettese - "Inter-national Samaritan" Fr. Vettese is the President and Founder of International Samaritan/Central American Ministries. He managed homes for homeless youth in U.S., Central and South America, and United Kingdom. Fr. Vettese has been awarded a Paul Harris Fellow by Rotary International. He is active in community initiatives, including urban planning, housing and education. He discusses the chronic and severe conditions of people living in garbage dump communities in the developing world.
March 26, 2012 Brian Kennedy - "The Birth of the Studio Glass Movement at Toledo Museum of Art."
Brian has been President, Director, and CEO of the Toledo Museum of Art, since September 1, 2010. He oversees a 36-acre campus housing one of America's finest art collections in three architecturally significant buildings. A strategic thinker and collaborative leader, Brian also is a respected art historian, curator and author. Brian discussed the 50th anniversary celebrations and events in 2012, including the Glass Art Society meeting in June in Toledo.
March 5, 2012 Congresswoman Kaptur, Congressman Kucinich, and Candidate Veysey- "Congressional Debate" The Blade's ombudsman, Jack Lessenberry asked various questions from all three candidates on health care, seniority in Congress, and a proposed national right to work law. Miss Kaptur stated that something has to be done with the Asian Carp problem in the Great Lakes. She blames most of the deficit on the Wall Street bailout, the Bush tax cuts, and wars. Mr. Kucinich said he supported the health care bill reluctantly because he would have preferred a single-payer system and said he has a close relationship with President Obama. He agrees with Kaptur about the Asian Carp problem. He explained that we must stop the war and look for investments to help the economy. Mr. Veysey attacked the $15 trillion federal debt and criticized the Affordable Care Act because it creates an $8,000.00 "doughnut hole" for employees whose employers will choose to the $2,000 penalty vs the insurance premium. All three candidates opposed a proposed right to work law.
March 12, 2012 Kevin Sauder, "Family Owned Business" Kevin is the President/CEO of Sauder Woodworking Co., a 77 year old family business which is North America's largest manufacturer of ready-to-assemble furniture. Their products are distributed primarily through discount chains, office superstores, and furniture stores. Kevin is a member of the University of Toledo Center for Family & Privately-Held Business. His presentation IS on his company and family owned business.
February 27, 2012 Yuval Zaliouk, The Truth about the Middle East Conflict. Yuval discussed some of Israel's enemies, propaganda, misconceptions, media bias and myths that are responsible for distorting what he believes are the true origins and causes of the Middle East conflict. He showed slides of what Israel look like in the early 1900 and then what it looks like now. Yuval spoke about the struggle of the Palestine people. He explained the legal aspects and the resettlement between the Arabs and Jews.
February 13, 2012 Dr. Richard Ruppert & Tom Palmer- Better Government, Better Furture, Better Jobs. Dick is a retired President of the former Medical College of Ohio and before that was a distinguished professor of Medicine at OSU. Tom is a managing partner at Marshall & Melhorn. Both Tom and Dick have been on boards and in leadership positions in a number of civic organizations including the RGP and Toledo Lucas County Port Authority. They shared the key study recommendations of the Lucas County Citizen Review. They explainrf how the changes in the structure of Lucas County government will benefit Lucas County residents and NW Ohio. In additon, they described the necessary steps to secure a place for the Charter initiative on the 2012 November ballot.
Bruce Baumhower, "State of Automobile Industry in Northwest Ohio Including Recent Developments" Bruce is a Toledo native who graduated from Whitmer High School in 1972 and started work at Chrysler/Jeep the same year. He has been elected to various union offices including becoming President of the UAW local 12 in 1993. Bruce currently serves on the Board of the Regional Growth Partnership and Imagination Station. He discussed the turnaround of the domestic auto industry and the exciting opportunities it presents for Northwest Ohio. Bruce will also talk about the employment opportunities that will be created here, both in the assembly plants and the supplier industry.
Mayor Michael Bell-State of the City Address. Mayor Bell was elected Mayor of Toledo, taking office on January 4, 2010. He has over 19 years of executive experience as Fire Chief and State Fire Marshal, managing multi-million dollar budgets, and over 500 employees, and working with multiple agencies and business interests. Mayor Bell updated us on any changes that have been made since taking office and any upcoming changes for the City of Toledo.
January 23, 2012 Victor Dubina-State of the Postal Service. Victor discussed what the Postal Service is facing today. He discussed that 1st class mail peaked in 2006 but since then due to the internet, Facebook, and Twitter, the mail has declined and this is partly why the Postal Service is in a financial crisis. Victor indicated that the Postal Service was debt free in 2006 and now facing $13 billion in debt. Victor explained what changes need to be done to keep the Postal Service going and discussed briefly the actions of Congress.
JJanuary 9, 2012 Mary Fedderke- Toledo Zoo-A look at the Past and a Glimpse into the Future.Mary stated that the Toledo Zoo receives 900,000 visitors annually. The Zoo's mission is to encourage others to support them in caring for animals through their exhibits and programs. She explained the different exhibits and programs that the Zoo has to offer to the public. Mary spoke about the latest and upcoming attractions at the Zoo - new tiger cubs, new trail near the elephant exhibit opening May 18, 2012, and a new aquarium which people can experience an underwater realm.
December 19, 2011 The Toledo Symphony Chamber Players-"Music of the Season & Holiday Sing Along."
Rotarians know that the holidays have arrived when the Toledo Symphony Chamber players take the stage. This is the Symphony's 24th appearance for the Rotary Club of Toledo. Jeffrey Pollock returns to conduct the Toledo Symphony. Christopher Lortie was the auction winner at the Itza Ball event for the special conductor to conduct the Toledo Symphony with a song. The students from the Toledo Symphony School of Music will complete this traditional holiday gift of music. This performance is the perfect event for Rotarians, their spouses, and their guests - guaranteed to put everyone in the spirt of the holidays ahead.
December 12, 2011 Senator Rob Portman - "Update from Washington"
Senator Portman grew up in an Ohio small business family, where he learned early on the value of hard work, leadership, and fiscal responsibility. He was born in Cincinnati where he lives today with his wife Jane, and their three children. Senator Portman is the junior United States Senator from Ohio. He is a member of the Republican Party. He succeeded retiring Senator George Voinovich. From 1993 to 2005 he served in the United States House of Representatives, representing Ohio's 2nd Congressional District, which stretches along the Ohio River from Hamilton County suburbs of Cincinnati east to Scioto County and Pike County. He served in two federal cabinet positions under the administration of President George W. Bush.
Toledo Rotary December 5, 2011. Scott Fry - "Teach for America: Corps Member Experience and the Future".Scott has a Masters Degree from Dominican University and B.A. from the Ohio State University. He has been with Teach for America since 2009 and has taught 6th grade literature and 6-8th grade mathematics. He is a member of the Boy Scouts of America and has received the scouting's highest award Eagle Scout which only 2% of Boy Scouts achieve. Scott gave us an inside look at Teach for America, both from the perspective of a former corps member and from the organization level and discussed tentative plans on expanding its program to Ohio.
November 21, 2011 Toledo Rotary Foundation Trustees - Your Toledo Rotary Foundation Update.The Foundation Trustees gave us an update on how the Toledo Rotary Foundation continues to do good works in the community. Your 2011-2012 Foundation officers are; Chairman, Reg Jackson, Vice Chairman, Larry Howe and Secretary-Treasurer, Debbie Monagan and Trustees Stacy Hammer, Chuck Mann, Sue Martin, Hunt Sears, Mary Werner, and Rick Yocum. There is a special presentation of the 100th Paul Harris Fellow. Through our members' generous donations the Toledo Rotary Foundation is able to support community organizations through grants. The presentation will demonstrate how the Toledo Rotary Foundation provides grants, is fiscally responsible and helps to make our local and international community a better place to live.
November 14, 2011 Dr. Amjad Hussain - "Middle East" Background and an update Dr. Sayed Amjad Hussain was born on January 1, 1937 in Peshawar City, Pakistan to Agha Sayed Gulbadshah, a civil servant in provincial government. He is the past President of the Islamic Center of Greater Toledo and currently, he serves on the Governing Board of WGTE Public Broadcasting in Northwest Ohio and on the Board of Trustees of The University of Toledo. Since 1976, Dr. Hussain has visited Pakistan on a yearly basis for voluntary teaching at Khyber Medical College, Peshawar. As a freelance writer, he has written over four hundred newspaper and magazine articles about history, politics, religion and culture in American and international publications. Dr. Hussain discussed the past, present, and future of Afghanistan. He spoke about the British presence in 1842 and the invasion by the Soviet Union in 1978 in Afghanistan. Dr. Hussain spoke about the Civil War in Afghanistan and the cost of the war. Dr. Hussain mentioned a book he wrote about the Taliban and he stated that the death of Osama bin Laden did not have much impact on the Taliban in Afghanistan. Dr. Hussain concluded that changes in Afghanistan come very slowly and it is doubtful that if Afghanistan can be brought under the influence of the United States
November 7, 2011 Mayor Michael Bell & Pat Nicholson- Toledo Civic Hall of Fame. Mayor Michael Bell was elected Mayor of Toledo, taking office on January 4, 2010. He previously served as the Toledo Fire Chief and State Fire Marshal. His career in Public Service began in 1980. Pat Nicholson created N-Viro International Corporation that went public in 1993. He served on the board of the Toledo-Lucas County Port Authority for 16 years and is the co-founder and current Chairman of the Toledo Civic Hall of Fame. The Toledo Civic Hall of Fame is a mayoral commission that researches and selects worthy Toledoans who have made a significant contribution to our community. Each honoree is recognized with a plaque that hangs in the Local History and Genealogy Department of the Main Toledo-Lucas County Public Library.
October 21, 2011 6600 District Governor Helyn Bolanis - District Governor Official Visit. Past President of the Rotary Club of Toledo Helyn Bolanis became District Grovernor in July 2011. She has been a member of the Rotary Club of Toledo since 1995 and was President of the club 2008-2009. Helyn is the President of Parlan Financial Corp. DG Bolanis will address the club regarding Rotary International and the District's goals, objectives and issues that are important to the club and its membership.
October 24, 2011 Joe Napoli-Not a baseball or hockey fan? Perfect! A peek behind the marketing and sales strategy that makes the Hens and Walleye successful.
Joe shared some history of Mud Hens Baseball and Walleye Hockey. Joe stated that Fifth Third Field opened in 2002 and 5.5 million fans have attended since opening day. He also spoke about the Walleye hockey team and how they have competed since they started in 2009. Joe explained how both the Mud Hens and the Walleye play an important role in the community by being affordable and family friendly.
John Satkowski is the interim President of Owens Community College effective October 1, 2011. He has served as the College's Executive Vice President of Business Affairs and Chief Financial Officer since February 2007. He is responsible for all business operations for Owens and also serves as Treasurer for the Board of Trustees. Prior to his position at Owens, John served as the Associate Vice President of Academic Finance at the University of Toledo from 2000-2007. John will be addressing the needs of first generation college students and contributing to the area's high college graduation rate. He will also talk about the solutions for the future investment in student success, partnerships with area colleges, community involvement and high school outreach.
September 26, 2011 Cheryl Conley-Memory Changes: What's Normal, What's Not?
Cheryl Conley, MA, LSW, is the Program Director for the Alzheimer's Association, Northwest Ohio Chapter. In that capacity, she directs the social services, education programs, and two adult day centers for the five offices and 24-county area served by the Chapter. She is also adjunct faculty in the gerontology program at Bowling Green State University. Cheryl has been working in the field of aging for over 25 years. She will address what is normal or not in memory changes and also which are symptoms of a health problem such as Dementia or Alzheimer's disease.
Rotary Club of Toledo, OH, USA: Jim Funk is the Executive Director of Read for Literacy, a position he has held for over five years. Prior to joining RFL, Jim served in a variety of positions including serving as co-founder and for ten years a principal in the Toledo based PR/Marketing firm of Funk/Luetke, Inc., now FLS Marketing. In 2009 Toledo Rotary provided a $5,000 grant to provide books and learning materials for a new program, Creating Young Readers, which was being launched by Read for Literacy with three-year demonstration funding from the Stanahan, Toledo Community and Anderson foundations. Jim's presentation reports to Rotary on the successes achieved during the first two years along with the plans for the future.
September 12, 2011 Chief Luis Santiago-Introduction to the Toledo Fire Department
Chief Santiago started the program acknowledging four Toledo Fire Fighters who went to the New York City days after the 9/11 attack. He reminded everyone that it is the 50th anniversary of the Anthony Wayne Trail Tanker fire in 1961.Chief Santiago discussed what the Toledo Fire and Rescue does and and the number of calls that were responded. He indicated that they gave over 3,000 smoke alarms away to the community this past year. He explained what kind of training the fire frighters and EMS go through. Chief Santiago stated that the mission is to protect the community.
Rotary Club of Toledo Ohio USA called to order by President Gary McBride. Judge Connie Zemmelman-Human Trafficking of Minors.Judge Zemmelman has been a Lucas County Juvenile Court Judge since 2007. She has a Law Degree from University of Toledo and B.A. from Bowling Green State University. She was chosen by colleagues for The Best Lawyers in American for her work in family-related areas of law. Judge Zemmelman will focus on the prevalence of sex trafficking of juveniles in NW Ohio and how these victims are treated in our Juvenile Court system.
Rotary Club of Toledo, Ohio, USA on August 22, 2211, meeting called to order by President Gary McBride. Program is Dr. Anthony Comerota who practices vascular surgery and general surgery in Toledo, OH. He graduated from Temple University School of Medicine in 1974. Dr. Comerota has expertise in 17 areas: Pulmonary Embolism, Aneurysm, and Cerebrovascular Disorder to name a few. He summarizes the two weeks he spent at the US Military Hospital in Landstuhl, Germany in August 2010. The hospital is the largest US hospital outside the United States and serves as the evacuation destination for soldiers injured in Iraq, Afghanistan, Africa and anywhere in Europe.
Rotary Club of Toledo, Ohio, USA, for August 15, 2011 called to order by President Gary McBride.Dean Monske-Economic Development in Northwest Ohio featured.Dean stated that the Regional Growth Partnership (RGP) formed 15 years ago. He explained how RGP started with funds from the Port Authority. And, how RGP raised 8 million dollars six years ago to become a private entity. Dean explained how RGP works with businesses looking to locate or expand in Toledo through one on one meetings. He concluded by elaborting on the NWO Branding Project.
