Kragujevac (YU) The idea of the show came from French President Charles de Gaulle, whose wish was that French and German youth would meet in a series of funny games to reinforce the friendship between France and Germany. The games were inspired by the matches between French cities. Some games were played in swimming pools. In 1965, three French men (Pedro Brime, Claude Savarit, Jean-Louis Marest) brought the idea of the games to all Europe with success. Teams representing France, Germany, Belgium, and Italy took part in the first edition of the show called Inter Nations Games

Did You Know? This International Final featured the giant ostriches that were subsequently seen in many compilation programmes. The idea was for the ostriches to run up an incline, slide down the other side and then pick up a giant ring in their mouths, which were operated by the male team members inside the costumes. BBC commentator Stuart Hall was in stitches with laughter once again, especially when the ‘ostriches’ walked away to restart the game after every elimination heat. This was the last year where playing a Joker would mean an automatic doubling of points scored in the game. From 1979, if a team finished their Joker game lower than third, they received no bonus points.

In English speaking countries, the show is also known as It's a Knockout, the title of the BBC's domestic version. In its original conception, it was broadcast from 1965 to 1999 under the auspices of the European Broadcasting Union and featured teams from different European countries in outlandish costumes (often large latex suits) competing to complete bizarre tasks in funny games. The original series run ended in 1982 but was revived a few years later with a different complexion of nations and hosted by smaller broadcasters.
