The game differs from its predecessor in that it features battles in both the "real world" and the "plastic world." It was also the first to introduce the concept of portals between the real world and their world (the plastic world), a theme that was expanded in later games. It is the sequel to both the first Army Men and Army Men 3D on PlayStation 1, which shared the same storyline as Army Men 1.
