Er glaubt, ‚dass wir Zeiten entgegengehen, auf die wir vorbereitet sein sollten‘. Bennert ist nicht gewillt, sich auf krumme Touren und ein hohes Risiko einzulassen. Zwischen Albert Stegewald und Hermann Prohl gibt es nach wie vor Streit um die von Stegewald beanspruchten kurfürstlichen Fischrechte im Mühlenfließ, die dieser laut Ministerbeschluss schließlich verliert. Michel Hollmann, der mit Wolfgang Prosske für Stegewald arbeitet, steigt aus, als er für Schiebergeschäfte in den Westteil der Stadt missbraucht wird. Er geht zurück zum Straßenbau. Prosske bleibt in Westberlin und operiert zusammen mit Strelitz, der enge Kontakte zu den Amerikanern hat, gegen die neue Ordnung in Grafenberg. Der Knabe wird ein hochangesehener aMann. Doch als eines Tages der Bürgermeister schwer erkrankt und der Tod am Fußende steht, dreht er diesen einfach um und trickst somit den Tod aus. Einmal läßt dieser ihm das durchgehen. Doch als der Junge es kurz darauf erneut versucht, läßt der Tod nicht mehr mit sich spaßen... Man schreibt das Jahr 1939. In dem kleinen märkischen Dorf Güterlohe leben Hannes und Janne, die Adoptivkinder des Wagenbauers Kleinert. Auch leben dort der Knecht Wilm und die Magd Alma, die auf einem Gutshof angestellt sind. Man geht seiner täglichen Arbeit nach und träumt von einer Zukunft in Zweisamkeit, von Hochzeit und eigenen Kindern. Noch ahnen die jungen Leute nicht, dass der herannahende Krieg ihr Leben völlig verändern wird. Vorerst aber sorgt Jupp Keuner, ein Dachdecker aus der nahegelegenen Stadt, für Unruhe im Dorf. Er macht den Frauen des Ortes schöne Augen und auch auf Janne hat er es abgesehen. Dies führt natürlich zu Spannungen zwischen ihm und Hannes. Als Jupp allerdings den großmäuligen Sohn des Bürgermeisters, der Nationalsozialist ist, bei einer Schlägerei aufs Kreuz legt, werden er sowie Wilm und Hannes Freunde. Fortan treffen sich die drei zu gemeinsamen Unternehmungen. Dabei spielt immer mehr der herannahende Krieg eine Rolle und die Frage, was jeder tun wird. Für Jupp jedenfalls steht fest, dass er nicht daran teilnehmen wird. Wilm hingegen sieht in dem Krieg die Chance zu einer großen Veränderung.
