四国地方愛媛県（旧国名「伊予国」）は、近代日本において自由民権運動の盛んな地であった高知県（旧国名「土佐国」）と接し、また、原子爆弾の投下によって平和運動の総本山となった広島県（旧国名「安芸国」「備後国」）とは海を隔てた対岸にあります。この地は、旧日本帝国時代において軍国主義に反対した二人の巨人を育んだ土地でもありました。 安藤正楽──歴史学者・画家・人権思想家。嘗て宇摩郡および愛媛県議会議員を務め、人権の擁護を積極的に訴えたり、日本軍部を批判したりしました。日露戦争後、凱旋軍人に請われて記念碑を建てる際、碑文に「世界人類の為に忠君愛国の四字を滅するにあり」と刻みました。この行為が後に当局に発覚し、一時拘留され、碑文は削り取られました。1953年7月に逝去。その後、1993年になって、記念碑の傍らに説明碑が設置されました。 水野広徳──元日本海軍大佐。第一次世界大戦および戦後にヨーロッパ視察を経て思想が一変し、確固たる反戦主義者となりました。軍を辞した後、評論家として、軍事膨張に反対し、軍備縮小、不平等条約の撤廃を主張し、中国人民にも同情の念を示しました。また、早い時期に、中国の強い抵抗、日米開戦、東京の壊滅を予見しました。その著作は日本国内でしばしば発禁処分を受けましたが、一部の作品は中国大陸で出版されました。1945年10月に病没。 ああ、愛媛よ、愛媛──その名にすら「愛」と「媛」の字を宿す地。この土地に、旧日本軍「慰安婦」や「女子勤労挺身隊」等、世界人類史の傷痕を記念するための少女像を建てることに、一体何の問題があるでしょうか？正式名称は「世界人権闘士像」と名付けるのも良いでしょう。通り過ぎる皆さんには、なぜ、このような名称にしたのかと、その背後に含まれている意味について、よく考え、感じ取っていただきたいものです。
