Through insightful conversations with industry leaders, we explore innovation in business, technology, and creativity. Whether it's digital workspaces, leadership hacks, or groundbreaking strategies, this podcast equips you with the tools to thrive. If you're ready to create, innovate, and shape the future, join us on Valuu Makers. Valuu Makers is the podcast that explores the true meaning of value. Formerly known as Digital Workspace Works, we continue to delve into the integration of people, processes, and technology, driving productivity and creating real value for businesses and individuals alike. Our episodes feature industry professionals who share their insights and experiences, offering a comprehensive understanding of how they bring value to their business and customers. Sponsored by Valuu AI, we are committed to bringing you valuable content that helps navigate the evolving digital landscape. In a lively episode of Valuu Makers, host Ryan Purvis welcomes back Richard Blank, the charismatic CEO of Costa Rica's Call Center. With a passion as electrifying as his pinball machines, Richard delves into the shifting landscape of remote work, the integration of AI in business, and the art of maintaining human connections in a digital age. What ensues is an insightful discussion on adapting to modern work environments while cherishing timeless personal interactions, interspersed with tales from Richard's unique journey in Costa Rica. Pinball Passion and Changing Norms Richard Blank shares his sentimental attachment to his pinball machines, a collection rooted in nostalgia for the vibrant 1970s. “I'm living a 13-year-old dream, just having your own arcade,” he quips, underscoring his belief in blending professional demands with personal passions. Yet, his story isn't just about games — it's about adapting to forced transitions, like the shift to remote work prompted by COVID-19. “Sometimes the best changes are when your dad throws you in the deep end of the pool and says, swim,” he reflects, emphasizing resilience. Navigating the New Work Landscape Ryan Purvis probes into the transformative effects of remote work on business operations. Richard candidly admits, “The labor pool prefers working from home... But I'm old school, I'd like to see people.” While embracing technology, he stresses the irreplaceable value of human interaction and the spontaneity of office conversations. The switchover to cloud-based systems, a critical move for many businesses, also forms a large part of their discussion. Leveraging AI Without Losing Humanity A focal point of their conversation is the role of AI in transforming business practices. Richard sees AI as augmentative rather than replaceable, highlighting its role in enhancing efficiency while preserving the human touch. “The AI can never hug you...or say Happy birthday,” he asserts, advocating for a balanced approach where AI handles routine tasks, leaving humans to build genuine relationships. Ryan, too, stresses this point, noting how AI can simplify tasks, granting more time for personal pursuits. Richard's views are clear: “There’s a lot of entry-level and easily replaceable employees that feel threatened,” he acknowledges, but emphasizes, “If you have skills... companies will still hire you.” It's a reminder that while AI is revolutionizing how we work, it cannot replicate human empathy or creativity. Building a Future with Personal Touches Despite technological shifts, Richard stresses the importance of empathy and personal connections. “There is no replacement for the satisfaction of a real high-five,” he insists, capturing the essence of human interaction that technology can't replace. His narrative is not just about adapting to change but doing so while cherishing the human elements of his industry. Wrap-up: As Ryan and Richard's conversation draws to a close, the key takeaway is clear: adapt to new technologies while maintaining the human touch that sets businesses apart. For more enriching insights, tune into the episode and explore how to navigate the changing digital workplace. Building Abroad: Costs and 'The Gringo Charge' If you ever have the chance once in your life to build a castle, This industry is very lucrative. I had my building. Things were doing well. It was a honeymoon stage. If I tried this in the United States, it would have been three times the cost. And when I'm getting certain labor here for $3 an hour to do the gray, you can build buildings for a fraction of the cost. There are certain things that are expensive, but I tell you what, I also learned something else, my friend. If I personally went to these stores and asked for something, it would be a dollar. But if I had a local contact and go ask for it, it'd probably be 60 cents. And so I would always get the gringo charge. It's business. Listen, business is business. But then again, I'm old school like that. I'm giving you a ton of money and why don't we have a nice relationship? But whatever, Costa Rica: Paradise for Decompression & Clarity What is going on? Costa Rica has two seasons, wet and dry. It's amazing, right? The temperature is still beautiful. So I have to decide, do I want to put the top up or down in the convertible? But it's so lush here. It's beautiful when the rain comes and I'm not trying to sound poetic, but you're walking around in paradise. If you happen to leave San Jose and drive into the rain forest, it's incredible. And what it does, Ryan, my good friend, it really allows you to decompress. And one of the greatest things is nature. When you played with your friends, had your shoes off running through grass. And so if any way I can put that phone away and just reconnect with the sights and the sounds and the smells of paradise, you don't need a psychiatrist and I don't need fast food. You can do this naturally. It's really a recharging of your batteries and a resetting. Thrown Into Remote Work—Adjusting to a New Normal It was forced upon me. And sometimes the best changes are when your dad throws you in the deep end of the pool and says, swim. He ain't got to do something. But it wasn't like cold turkey. I saw the gradual and the gradual was COVID. Fortunately, my company was able to survive through VPNs and work from homes. Just the people weren't used to it yet. Like working from home compared to going to the gym. It's a lot of discipline and structure really. And you don't have your good buddy Ryan sitting next to you, motivating you and you're picking up on a tough day. But now the labor pool prefers working from home. And I understand their arguments, the distance, the money, the time, but I'm old school. I'd like to see people. I like to share that sort of energy, break bread, hit the arcade, or just be there for the moment when you close the deal. And so That got taken away. I tell you what, there are some beautiful adjustments. Why AI Can’t Replace Human Empathy And there's something called the uncanny valley. This really brilliant Japanese scientist in the 70s said, listen, the more that machines get like humans, there will be a point where it gets very uncomfortable while it drops into that valley. Just like in Star Wars, where people like 2D and C3 and the uncanny valley. They're really making the gestures, but here's the thing. The timing is still off and the AI can never hug you or tell you what it's like to lose a puppy that runs away or to say happy birthday. Cause they know what it's like. And it's one of those things where I'm accepting it. It's beautiful for gathering. https://youtu.be/RbtEPb2bnhk https://youtu.be/hAUdwzbgUuQ https://youtu.be/_883VllFQKY https://youtu.be/MzL_B-NeF50 https://youtu.be/G-NErlyzfhg Richard Blank hired bassist Garry Gary Beers of INXS. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ieGjN5H4xPQ Heather Bicknell, Ryan Purvis, The Valuu Makers Podcast, Richard Blank,Costa Rica's Call Center, Outsourcing, Telemarketing Call Centre, BPO, Nearshore Contact Center, Sales, Entrepreneur, B2B, Business, Podcast, Gamification,Leadership, Marketing, CX, Guest, Money, B2C education, BPO trainer, call centre, contact centre, contact center Welcome to Valuu Makers, where we talk less about hype and more about outcomes.
